Years 2

Hi.
How far are we going to go with the years? English Wikipedia currently go to 2029 in terms of year pages that don't redirect to 3rd millennium. Is there any year we're aiming to get up to? Belwine💬📜 20:55, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking we should just leave it there. Not much purpose going further. --IWI (talk) 20:56, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks :) Belwine💬📜 20:57, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @Belwine: Our practice has been to create a page for a year only if there's more than just the standard skeleton information. For example, 2069 currently has only that basic info. I'll go looking for those and remove such years and any categories that end up empty. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:14, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thank you. :) Belwine💬📜 21:19, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: While I agree and won't create any more, I don't see any real purpose of deleting such pages. --IWI (talk) 21:43, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, I found some content to add to them. If you create any more, be sure to add something that's unique to the year, not just the standard things that all year pages get. We have deleted these in the past through the RFD process when they didn't have anything beyond that. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:29, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Will do. --IWI (talk) 16:45, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

making Bethany Joy Lenz picture frameless

For what reason did you make the Bethany Joy Lenz photo frameless? Can you clarify that? Angela Kate Maureen 21:39, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) I don't see anything wrong with that, only that it will mess up mobile view. I did it before for Maiko --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 22:02, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Tropical Storm Angela: No real reason, I just thought it looked better. Undo if you like. Kind regards --IWI (talk) 22:47, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've been adding thumbnails and captions to images. Without the frame and caption I think it looks unfinished and like it's just floating in space. With the frame it looks like it's supposed to be there.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 23:18, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Often there is no information to add. Guidelines state that captions are there to offer context, which is not really needed in a lead image displaying a person. It’s a matter of opinion, but I think frameless images look better when no caption is needed. --IWI (talk) 23:31, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Better to avoid "currently" in articles

Hi, IWI,

I see you've been adding state legislature articles. That's great. They need more attention. But, I have a suggestion. It is best to avoid currently. As you well know, we have very few editors here. Currently creates a lot of maintenance as elections happen. Rather than "The house is currently controlled by the Republican Party." something like "The Republican Party got control in 20XX." which is still true even if the Democrats regain control later. It's best just to avoid now and currently altogether. Thanks, --Gotanda (talk) 05:29, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Gotanda: Yes that makes sense, thanks for the suggestion. I recently updated an article with seat numbers from 2012, so this is clearly an issue. Kind regards, --IWI (talk) 05:32, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Camouflaged Mirage: Of course. I made sure all of the changes were vandalism. All of the edits were reverting good edits by Belwine, so it seemed appropriate. Mass rollback is a powerful tool and must be used wisely! And you're welcome Belwine :) --IWI (talk) 19:46, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

One of your edits on the RFD for Ram Ray

With this change, you struck out the input from a user who became blocked after making the comment. When you want to make that kind of note, please just leave your own note and do not strike out the other user's comment. Otherwise you leave yourself open to being accused of interfering with the other user's comments (even though that might be deserved). Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:17, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Auntof6: I was under the impression that users are not allowed to vote twice. All of their other sockpuppet votes were stricken, so I don't really see the issue in also striking this one. Sockpuppet votes intefere with the closing admin determining consensus. In addittion, you put emphasis on the word after, even though someone couldn't possibly comment while they were blocked. Of course, I would not strike a vote of someone purely on the basis that they are blocked, if that is the impression that you got. Best, --IWI (talk) 17:24, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Your edit summary mentioned that the user was a blocked sockpuppet, not that they had already commented. The other stricken comments were stricken by Eptalon, who is an admin/crat/checkuser, and therefore officially has the ability to determine that two users are the same. I just don't want to have the possibility of a user being able to accuse another of doing them any wrong. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:16, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: A CU check determined they are likely related and was consequently blocked by another CU. I assumed Bsadowski1 had just forgotten to strike the comment. You can see the check on the WP:RfCU page. I probably should have made it clearer to avoid confusion. --IWI (talk) 22:20, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

User scripts

Hello IWI! Hope you're well. Regarding user scripts, are you allowed to use scripts from en.wikipedia here (with minor changes to adjust for simple.wikipedia)?
Also, how can I use the reset talk script? It is getting a little tedious manually removing/reverting vandalism from talk pages.
Thanks, Belwine💬📜 22:08, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Belwine: You can load scripts from any URL by adding : mw.loader.load("url"); to Special:MyPage/common.js. For reset talk, that URL would be https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:DannyS712/Reset_talk.js?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript - you can also use any URL from English Wikipedia, or anywhere on the internet, depending on your browser's crossorigin settings. Naleksuh (talk) 22:13, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Message on Bangladeshi users

Masum Ibn Musa and Prodipto Deoler are seems to be connected to each other. I may or may not think this as sockpuppetry of Masum Ibn Musa. What do you think?KP (talk) 10:04, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) I don't think that this new account is a sock, personally. Masum Ibn Musa appears to be quite a trusted user on Wikipedia in general. He has patroller and rollback rights on the Bengali Wikipedia, rollback rights here and on the English Wikipedia. He has been given these rights because he is trusted with them. I think Masum would know that socking is not a good idea, I would be surprised if he was socking. Belwine💬📜 10:22, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
While, as Belwine states, this would be unlikely, if you have evidence of socking then feel free to request CU. I'm not seeing any evidence right now to suggest any sockpuppetry. --IWI (talk) 10:38, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Even a CU might not help much, as Bangladesh is a dense country, it's very hard for CU to work in these situations, we need strong behavioral evidence. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 10:50, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Anyway, per AGF such speculation is not appropriate without evidence. --IWI (talk) 11:01, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 11:12, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I came here from a rfd and noticed this conversation. As a Bangladeshi user I can confirm they are not sock. Prodipto is a trusted user in bnwiki and has Autopatrolled right there. I'm familiar with both of their editing behaviour. They both are interested in Islam related articles. Thank you.Yahya (talk) 11:18, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello

Hello IWI! Will you teach me how to move a page? Besides, I noticed you said you have two accounts in wikipedia. Is it permitted, may I know? And one more thing, will you help me create my user page, putting templates like those in yours. They are really attractive, I think so. And lastly, wow😮, you are a 19 years old guy and very active in wikipedia. In fact, I am also 19. Haoreima (talk) 08:23, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: Hi. So to move a page, you click the "more" tab at the top of the page and then click "move". This will give you the form to move the page. Yes I do have an alternate account that I use on public computers. If you do that, you have to make it very clear on the user pages that you have another account. Pretending to have one or otherwise misleading people with more than one account is sockpuppetry and will get you blocked. If you want to use the templates on my user page, just press "edit" and copy them over. Thanks for the kind words. --IWI (talk) 09:34, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Edit the year article templates

Hello, I would like to know how to edit the year article template so that it isn't exactly the same as the English Wikipedia. What I mean is that I don't think it's that necessary to add in extra info about a certain year other than it being a common year, leap year, century leap year, current year, the first or last year of a specific decade, century, millennium. For example:

2020 (MMXX) was a leap year starting on Wednesday in the Gregorian calendar. It was the first year of the 2020s.

2021 (MMXXI) is a common year starting on Friday in the Gregorian calendar and is the current year.

2022 (MMXXII) will be a common year starting on Saturday in the Gregorian calendar.

For century leap years:

2000 (MM) was a century leap year starting on Saturday in the Gregorian calendar. It was the last year of the 20th century and 3rd millennium and the first year of the 2000s.

If you want to discuss this more, please let me know on my talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎189.169.152.227 (talkcontribs) 01:20, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

CI

I cannot wrap my head on how committed identity works. Can you explain it to me? --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 01:29, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@つがる: A CI is a code that can identify you if you get locked out of your account or your account is otherwise compromised. Usually, you will think of some personal information that nobody would know, and then put that through a hash generator online, giving you the code. You can then prove your identity by giving the information you used, and they will check to see if it will give the correct code. So say if my information was "Wikipedia", I could give that to you, and you could see if that would give "D83D8B6E18C38434A113775AC1879A3A738222B1DD0B06BD7B7B6E00B99B69A532CD7F06F44621E62047E9FF7107E655BC2927959A3A9AE3FB2BD47E07E863C0" on an online SHA-512 generator (which it does), so you know I am the true owner of the account. --IWI (talk) 01:42, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

If you can find good, independent and reliable sources to show that it is notable, it is more likely it will be kept; I was unable to find any. Best wishes, --IWI (talk) 23:56, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
In terms of commons, I have removed the missing permission template now that you have given evidence of permission. --IWI (talk) 23:57, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
IWI please direct me to the criteria for notability, as this is the leading NGO in LGBTIQ+ work in the region. They organized confrence with Council of Europe and European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation. They led important and ground breaking research on non-binaries in sport...what is the criteria that is not met? It is NGO doing LGBTIQ+ sport work, not elite commercial club to be winning league competitions. Please elaborate. QueerSport (talk) 00:03, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@QueerSport: Please click here to read the general notability guideline. To show notability, we need several reliable sources that talk about the organisation in depth (a lot). They also have to be not connected with the organisation. This usually means magazines, journals, newspapers, news reports etc. --IWI (talk) 00:07, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
IWI that is general notability maybe for mainstream sports, not for community sports organization. Should we not have any because they do not fill news? Dont you think that is CIS-gender and straigh bias? QueerSport (talk) 00:15, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not at all. The general notability guideline can apply to anything, hence the word "general". If no sources have covered it due to some sort of bias, that's out of our control unfortunately. We follow what sources say; Wikipedia does not exist to right great wrongs. Best regards, --IWI (talk) 00:19, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello ImprovedWikiImprovment, I would like to invite you to WikiProject Vital Articles! There are over 100,000 articles on Simple English Wikipedia, but this project's goal is to work on 100 of the most important articles. We will choose one or two articles to improve at a time. We will try to make the articles more complete or promote them to good article status. Hope to see you there! Naddruf (talk) 18:48, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nominating for rights

Hi. On enwiki, I noticed users can be nominated by other users for rights (autopatrol, rollback, etc.) Can users be nominated by others for such rights here? —Belwine (talk) 21:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @Belwine: Here, we nominate mostly just for rights that are voted on. If you know someone you think should have rollback, patroller, etc., just suggest to them that they request it. BTW, you can't nominate for or request autopatrol: on this wiki, that's bundled with patroller. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:01, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks —Belwine (talk) 22:04, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Belwine: Yeah, it is only really common here with advanced user rights such as sysop. --IWI (talk) 23:13, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Judeo-Christian and why I RfD'd

I'm posting this here because our conversation at RfD has moved away from whether the article Judeo-Christian should be deleted. I think you misunderstand why I nominated it for deletion.

When a drafter writes "Jews believe Jesus was the Messiah" and "Christians think they're descended from Jacob" in Wikipedia's voice, they're promoting a political point. It touches on things like the U.S. military stance on Israel. How much do you know (or want to know) about the rise of evangelical Christianity in American politics since the eighties?

It was a little like if the article had said "Antifa organized the January 6 storming of the U.S. capitol" (it didn't) or "The Chinese government made the COVID-19 virus in a lab to use as a weapon" (it didn't). That stuff has to go. If guidelines apply, they're guidelines about hoaxes, or WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS if the "wrong" is that people think it really was Trumpers at the riots (which it was). Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:17, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Darkfrog24: Of course it has to go, but deletion is not cleanup. An article having unsourced information is not a reason to delete. If it is an obvious hoax, A6 can apply. Otherwise, it is simply a cleanup situation. --IWI (talk) 11:20, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
No, but I offer that RfD is the designated place for further inspection and discussion. You said to reread WP:DELETE, and it says this: "Articles that do not have sources and are probably not true. Usually these can also be quickly deleted as vandalism or nonsense if the article is obviously nonsense or obviously false or a hoax, but articles that might be true should be inspected and discussed more." The policy makes provision for hoaxes that need to be looked at closely before it becomes clear they are hoaxes. If you require something from WP:NOT, it's #6, propaganda and advocacy.
I gather you think it would be better to research and rewrite an article until it is no longer harmful; that's not what I'm here to talk about right now. Have I satisfied you that I broke no rules in nominating Judeo-Christian for deletion? Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:47, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Darkfrog24, I didn’t say you broke any rules, nor do I think so. This is not something you should take as some sort of accusation, it was just friendly advice for the future. I totally understand your rationale for starting the request, but arguments for cleanup are to be avoided for deletion discussions. It would have been better to bring it up on the article's talk page or simple talk for general discussions about the article. RfDs are discussions for if you believe the article should be deleted. And I’d like to again emphasise the Wikipedia idiom that "deletion is not cleanup" once again. Many, perhaps even the majority, of new articles have problems; this does not mean we should simply delete them all. This is especially important on a small wiki like ours. I'd also add that you would do better focusing on the spirit of a policy rather than firmly sticking to them word for word; that's not how they are intended. Best, --IWI (talk) 15:03, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I did believe the article should be deleted and also that the deletion could not wait for a talk page discussion. I deal with many new articles and most of them do not have problems that require immediate deletion, but this one did. It doesn't sound like you do understand my rationale, but I don't think I can explain any more without repeating myself. You've made it clear you did read my posts the first time. Darkfrog24 (talk) 15:09, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Darkfrog24: It's not something worth pondering on, it was just some friendly advice for the future :). I did not intend to seem like I was accusing you, so I am sorry if I did. I understand you wanted to delete it, I was trying to explain that deletion is not cleanup, and such arguments shouldn't be used for deletion. If the concept of the article was completely false, or the majority of the article is false, that would be different. In this case, the author had inserted some unverifiable claims, something that should be removed and sourced to be correct. Only if there is no useful information and the article is completely false would deletion be appropriate. Remember, on our small wiki it is especially harmful to delete useful content; eventually somebody will come along and clean it up, and when that happens is of no relevance as Wikipedia has no deadline. Best regards, and have a nice afternoon, --IWI (talk) 18:36, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for the link. What a fascinating read. I will point out two things I read in NOTCLEANUP:
  • (If there is no usable content, however, it may well be best to delete.)
  • if an article is so bad that it is harmful in its current state, then deleting now, and possibly recreating it later, remains an option
You'll recall this is pretty much what I said. I do get what you're saying about how most articles don't need deletion; they just need a little help. We're agreed on that point. Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:41, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Your comment at WP:RFP#Current requests for rollback

Since that request was already declined it is no longer active, so that comment was not needed. If and when the user becomes unblocked and makes a new request, an admin will re-evaluate at that time. The evaluating admins do see extenuating circumstances like this, and having non-admins make comments 1) makes it harder to read through request pages because of the extra verbiage and 2) promotes hard feelings between editors. Please try to keep non-admin observations to a minimum in places that are not community votes. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:09, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @つがる: It is. See en:WP:CANVAS. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:43, 14 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Auntof6 Thanks for the link, Please note I don't plan to do this, I was just curious and wondering. Also, I noticed you removed my bullet point, first off please accept my apologies for having this habit (it's hard to break! Also I was told it wasn't really much a problem) but isn't that 'changing other's comments?'. --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:54, 14 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
The issue with "changing other's comments" relates to changing the content (it can even apply to fixing typos), not to changing the formatting. I removed the asterisk out of habit, because conversations on talk pages usually don't use them, and I didn't intend to use one in my reply. It isn't a big problem, as you say, just something that 1) is unnecessary and 2) can cause indenting problems if there are a lot of replies. At the end of the day, though, it's your talk page, so put it back if you want and I'll try to remember not to remove them. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:01, 14 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6 and つがる: Just noting that it is my talk page, not Tsugaru's. However, I don’t think this is a particularly big deal though, and certainly isn't changing someone's comment to remove the bullet point. Often one may change the indentation of another ones comment for better readability. Tsugaru, if you want to re-add it, you are welcome to. If you want to use it in the future, you can; and I don’t think there are big issues caused by it.
In terms of canvassing, asking someone to vote any way in a community discussion would be canvassing, even if that vote is against your actual view or detrimental to you. Any attempt to disrupt the consensus building process is not allowed. --IWI (talk) 10:21, 14 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Assistance request

Hi IWI, a few days ago I created Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as it was showing as a red-link on Spaniel, but today I discovered an article Cavalier King Charles spaniel already exists, albiet unreferenced. (I believe, in common with all dog breeds - see for instance articles I had nothing to do with yet Irish Setter or German Shepherd - that all the words in the dogs breed name should normally be inital capitals. How do we go about merging here but keeping the correct title and of course the references, there is the interesting part in the original article about King Charles keeping these dogs that is not covered in mine but I could source and add that? Any help appreciated. JW 1961 Talk 20:56, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Hello there; I think you can use either. The Enwp article has a sentence: "She was the first African-American woman to serve as president of the City Council, Baltimore's first female mayor, and Baltimore's third black mayor." (pretty much at the top). But remember, I am not a native English speaker, and there may be nuances of either "African American" or "black" that I am not aware of. It looks like "black" is also used for certain groups in the Middle East and Turkey (which resulted from Slave trade, mostly in the Ottoman Empire); anyway: Indigenous Australians ("Aborigines") have also been called "black"; in "Melanesia" (the clusters of Islands in the Pacific), the "Melos" is form Ancient Greek, and means black (in reference to the darker skin color of these people). That said you're probably fine with either...--Eptalon (talk) 08:15, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) "African American" is more specific, and therefore is a better choice if it applies. "Black" can apply to anyone with dark skin. "African American" refers to American people with African ancestry, especially those who are descended from African people who were brought to the Americas as slaves. In the US, we tend to use the terms interchangeably, but that is not a good practice on Wikipedia where we are supposed to have a more global view. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:33, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you both for giving further explanation. --IWI (talk) 11:36, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Protected pages

You know, not all protected pages need a template, especially pages protected for short amounts of time. Having the template on them just increases the amount of housekeeping that has to be done when the protection expires. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:20, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

The template doesn't display the icon when it isn't protected, so it isn't a problem from that standpoint. It's something perhaps a bot could be made to take care of I suppose. You're right that the template is likely more useful on pages with longer protections. --IWI (talk) 11:23, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's good. Does it also suppress the category if the page isn't protected? --Auntof6 (talk) 12:23, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I believe it just switches to the "pages with incorrect protection template" category. --IWI (talk) 12:24, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
(change conflict)  (talk page stalker) There is a bot on enwiki that removes and adds protection templates automatically.
Although we don't have anywhere near as many protected pages as them, we could have a bot deal with protection templates, if it ever got so bad. --Belwine (talk) 11:25, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. It's not really a huge issue, because as I said, the template will only display the icon on pages that are actually protected. Periodically, people will go through the category and remove them. --IWI (talk) 11:26, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

SALTing

Hi, how does SALTing work here on simple.wiki? Do you think there are grounds to SALT Atto Abbas (taking also into consideration all the cross-wiki spam). I just want to make sure that the sockpuppet doesn't just create another (his 10th?) account, and re-create Atto Abbas. Nehme1499 (talk) 19:00, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Nehme1499: If they recreate, it can be re-deleted after an RfD that resulted in delete per QD criteria G4. SALTing is only usually warranted if we have repeated recreations. --IWI (talk) 19:01, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok got it. And do new articles (which had already been deleted previously) by non-autopatrolled users have some sort of indication that they were deleted at some point also here on simple? Nehme1499 (talk) 19:03, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
If they are at the same title, they yes, it will be in the logs. But our small community means an admin will likely remember that it had been deleted before, even if it's at a new title. If you see one in future, tag it with G4; that can help too. --IWI (talk) 19:06, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Meh, it still would have been flood. The 100 rule-of-thumb is only a recommendation, not a firm rule. Removed :) --IWI (talk) 15:47, 8 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah really if you end up going and checking other peoples edits while you were "flooding" when you were done then it doesn't really even matter. Basically people just wanted to make sure that edits didn't get missed that may have happened while you were editing. You will often see me do 50 edits stop for a couple minutes while I check any edits that happened while I made those 50 and then do another 50 and repeat etc. -Djsasso (talk) 16:22, 8 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

DYK Queue

What's the policy on updating the queue, the current one has been on for 8 months now. We have 3 more queues ready, I suggest a new queue, which will leave us with 2 queues left, a total of 16 months if we keep them on for 8 months each? Though it may vary depending on the numbers of DYK hooks made Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 01:13, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Generally you don't want to exhaust the DYK queue too quickly or we get in a situation where we use up all the hooks and then are stuck on one. Being that its been eight months we can probably update since we have a couple ready. But generally I suggest never updating them if we don't have a few ready. At the rate we generate them right now we don't make enough to update more than about once every 6 months. Unfortunately last year we switched them a bunch too fast so used them all up in a couple months and didn't spread them out so we could update them every couple months. -Djsasso (talk) 14:25, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that was my fault last year. Sorry. Right now, it could be good to switch the queues. --IWI (talk) 14:33, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
How can I update the Queue, if this seems to soon, please let me know, but we do have 2 queues after this one, and as mentioned earlier would last 1 year up to 16 months. --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 23:39, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Changes to Language article

Hi there - saw you were active and an admin so thought I'd ask you something! There have been a few changes to the page Language that have been trying to shoehorn facts about Greek into the introduction. It doesn't really make any sense reading the rest of it (seems like somebody wants to promote Greek?), but I'm wary of getting stuck in an edit war so was wondering if you could take a look and see what you think? Best, Milo, Talk, Contribs 17:23, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SpaceGuy32: Well the first thing I would say is please do not revert further on that page. You have already done three reverts, so per WP:3RR you shouldn't make any other reverts on that page for the next 24 hours at least, except vandalism. I will take a look at the problem, though I suggest you start a talk page discussion as this seems like a content dispute. I would also suggest you do not use rollback for such cases - it is designed for clear-cut vandalism only. Thank you for letting me know, --IWI (talk) 17:28, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
In terms of the content itself, I'm not sure what the IP editor is trying to say. It doesn't seem accurate that most English words come from Greek. --IWI (talk) 17:30, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes that's why I reverted originally, as that was clearly wrong information! But as you say it was getting close to becoming an edit war so I wanted to step back and let somebody else deal with it. Djasso seems to have decided to revert it and block the IP making some of the changes. Sorry with the rollback thing - I'll make sure it's completely clear-cut in the future. Thanks so much for your help, Milo, Talk, Contribs 17:34, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes indeed, though the block was only applied as it was an open proxy, which aren't allowed. And yes, it was good that you stepped back. --IWI (talk) 17:36, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Looks like an account has now been registered to make the same changes. I'm happy to start a talk page discussion if you think that would be useful, but I think the changes fairly obviously aren't helpful. Best, Milo, Talk, Contribs 17:41, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Seems like you blocked the account. Is that an SPA or a sock of the IP? Darubrub (Let me know) 17:58, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Since it seems obvious that it all comes from the same person, and there have been more than 3 reverts, I have applied a 24 hour edit warring block on the account. The other IP range was only blocked as a proxy. --IWI (talk) 18:01, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker)  (change conflict)  The changes are exactly the same as the IP changes, so they were abusing multiple accounts (and IPs) to break WP:3RR. --Ferien (talk) 18:01, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
So, ducky? Darubrub (Let me know) 18:03, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I only see one account being used unless I’m missing something. There is no policy against editing as an IP when you have an account. But yes, the reason I have applied the block is because per DUCK, they have broken 3RR. --IWI (talk) 18:04, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you are allowed to edit as an IP when you have an account, but when you are also edit warring using both an account and two IPs to try to get around WP:3RR, that's not acceptable in my view.--Ferien (talk) 18:08, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
All IPs used by them have been blocked, including two proxy ranges. This is why we have NOP. --IWI (talk) 18:12, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Friday Night Dinner

Hi there. On Friday Night Dinner on enwiki, there seems to be a mistake. Please could you correct the mistake below. 1. Users are inserting information stating the series has ended when Channel 4 have not released a statement whether it has or hasn’t. According to Channel 4, the series is believably still in production but the organisers of the show have no plans to make a new series for the time being. hello

Just wondering, what happens if you accidentality delete all of Wikipedia? Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 01:54, 16 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@つがる: Sorry for the delay. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean delete all articles? I don’t know how that would be possible, but that would be bad. Technically speaking it would be (eventually) reversible. --IWI (talk) 11:34, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) I suppose if you nuke users who have made the most articles then you could delete a good chunk of this Wikipedia. I don't think you can undo nukes at the same speed as you can do them. If you delete thousands of pages through nuke that would take ages to undo. However, I'm not sure whether it would be technically possible to nuke thousands of articles. --Ferien (talk) 11:56, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
The nuke interface let’s you pick a limit of what to delete, defaulted at 500. I'm not sure how long it would take to restore. Yes, these are powerful tools; thankfully, none of our admins would do such a thing. --IWI (talk) 11:59, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
After some tests, it definitely is possible to do such a thing. --Ferien (talk) 19:01, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I sort of meant this as a jokey question, of what happens if you nuke all Wikipedia pages. Sorry for not specifying it was a jokey question --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 20:07, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Actually, to be serious there is a comment here about admin tools being destructive, so I don't know how bad it would be if pages were randomly nuked (which will 99% not happen from an admin, unless the account is hacked) --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 20:12, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Quite damaging, but reversible from a technical standpoint. It would just take a while. Even if an admin account is compromised, it would still need someone who knows what they are doing for such a thing to happen, so hopefully unlikely. --IWI (talk) 06:57, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

No problem. I blocked for 31 hours as the standard first IP block. There hasn't been a level of disruption from the IP to warrant longer. Will monitor, thanks. --IWI (talk) 23:02, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Typically it says 31 hours. Is that something admins add to the reason and it just auto-populates the date and time of expiration? PotsdamLamb (talk) 01:28, 25 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Admins can specify whatever length of time they want. The block screen prefills 31 hours, which we often use for a first block for anyone, not just IPs. It's not necessarily standard, just frequently used. The idea there is that if a vandal is active at certain times of day, for example at noon their time, a 24-hour block might not affect them much because it would end around the time they're ready to be online again. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:29, 25 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

How ya doing?

You probably won:t see me around much for the next few weeks or months! But I will keep TWW updated to the best I can! Just seeing how things are here on Wikipedia. I just graduated High School, but still got lots of work to do on online school, and in real life! Doesn:t look like much has happened, asides from Ferien being an admin (congrats to him!) and the new Good Article Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 20:25, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

(And sorry for typos, using a Japanese-English Keyboard)! --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 20:26, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hello つがる! I am doing fine thanks. Congrats on your graduation. Nice to see you here again. --IWI (talk) 10:41, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Freedom Haven page deleted for incorrect reason - please correct

If I'm reading this correctly (I'm a newbie), you deleted Freedom Haven page for copyright violations because I missed adding a reference to my page when I was quoting myself. I then added the missing reference, but you deleted it anyways - please correct this and restore the page. The page in question is both [FreedomHaven.org FreedomHaven.org] AND http://freedomhaven.org/Tony/FreedomHaven/index2.html?5800771.8848421555... they both point to the same folder on the same server - it's the same page. Please correct your mistake and restore the page. Thank you.TonyOlsen (talk) 02:05, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello there. I took the decision to close the RfD early mainly because of the clear copyright violation. We cannot keep any text sourced from another website. Aside from that, as some voters said, the subject doesn't seem to have been covered in enough reliable sources to be notable for Wikipedia. There also appears to be a conflict of interest here; I suggest you edit in areas that you are not directly involved in. If you still disagree with my deletion, you can take it to deletion review. Best, --IWI (talk) 10:39, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

"I took the decision to close the RfD early mainly because of the clear copyright violation." I referenced the page I was quoting - why didn't this fix the copyright flag? What should I have done on the page that I didn't? TonyOlsen (talk) 00:17, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Whether you reference the source of the text or not, we cannot use copyrighted text from other websites. --IWI (talk) 13:15, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your response. "we cannot use copyrighted text from other websites" - I'm having trouble understanding this and would appreciate more information. Ignoring for the moment the fact that the source qouted here (FreedomHaven.org) was/is NOT copyrighted (it's published under the GNU license), doesn't WikiPedia quote copyrighted sources? If so, was the problem that I quoted this source incorrectly, or are you saying that we shouldn't quote copyrighted sources at all... or are you saying something else? I'm confused and request additional clarification (so that I can do it correctly next time). TonyOlsen (talk) 12:06, 30 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I hadn’t seen that it was published under a free licence, and would need to see where it says that. And you didn’t just quote the page (which would be fair use anyway), you simply used the text in the article to create this article. The point is moot anyway, because there were other reasons why I closed the RfD early as highlighted in the RfD for the deletion (notability). It was my bad choosing to delete under G12, instead of the RfD; apologies for that. --IWI (talk) 10:44, 31 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

the uses of "unauthorized" editing bot scripts

Is there some reason Wikipedia editors are prohibited from operating unauthorized editing bot scripts? Can you please explain reasons that editors on Wikipedia sites would not be allowed to do so? Angela Kate Maureen 02:43, 17 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Probably because if done wrong, they would mess up all the pages it operated on. --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 03:29, 17 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Because to use a bot, you have to be approved by a crat at WT:BOTS. Though the community has shown opposition to mass page creation with bots in the past. --IWI (talk) 08:35, 17 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Using a script can allow a user to make a mess of hundreds (if not thousands) or articles in a very short period of time. That is the biggest reason, so only trusted users are given the ability to use bots through the process that IWI links to. Anyone else that does so will be blocked. -Djsasso (talk) 12:03, 17 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Welcome back

Welcome back after a long gap, that's pretty long gap for former super active editor like you. May I know what had happened to you during those days? We're you unwell or sick? Haoreima (talk) 18:58, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: Hi! Thank you for asking; no I have not been sick, thankfully, but I recently started university so I have been very busy with that. I also had to move across the country to be here, so I haven't really had much time for Wikipedia. I was mostly only doing small fixes on enwiki. I hope to be more active this month. Thanks :) --IWI (talk) 19:01, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question about a Wiki Page

Hi there, I'm new to Wiki editing wiki and noticed that the name on the page https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highways_England is wrong, and since you were one of the others to edit I think you might be able to help. It should now be National Highways, just wanted to know if you could change the title, because I'm not too sure what I'm doing, lol. Oykwos (talk) 00:51, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Done I moved the page to the new name. Thanks, --IWI (talk) 22:19, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Deletion Review of Youssef Rzouga

Thanks for undeleting the Social Media Marketing page that I nominated for deletion review. Could you please look at the other one that I nominated? Both were deleted outside of our normal process by the same administrator and there seems to be consensus to undelete both. It looks like I put them both at the top of the page when I was meant to put them at the bottom, which might be why they were ignored for so long. Thank you. Wikipedia:Deletion review#Youssef Rzouga Blissyu2 (talk) 04:13, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • @Blissyu2: You've been cautioned about canvassing before, so please have a care before asking anyone to look at nominations you made. I say this knowing that I was the admin you're having the disagreement with, but this is a separate issue. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:31, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Deletion reason of Syed Falak

Hi, you recently deleted the page Syed Falak and you didn't mention the deletion reason in the logs. I would like to know the reason to improve the page. Thank you. 39.33.255.88 (talk) 12:58, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Because there was consensus from the community that the subject does not meet notability guidelines. It's unlikely any improvement will end with a different result. --IWI (talk) 16:10, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. The person is notable. Before making the decision, I think you should see the page by yourself instead of making decision on consensus from the community. Because I added so many reliable sources which were supporting the subject. I don't think so that the person is not notable. Please review the page again it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 39.33.255.88 (talk) 16:42, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
