Thanks change

Thanks for the warm welcome, Peterdownunder. I appreciate it :-). I'm all for the challenge of writing in Simple English, too! I usually edit normal Wikipedia, though. I'll maybe help convert some normal Wikipedia articles to Simple in the near future. Thanks! --Airplaneman (talk) 22:43, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikibreak change

Because of a busy period work, combined with playing tenor sax in a production of "Grease", I will be mostly out of action during the rest of May. Please leave messages but it maybe a while before I get back with an answer.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:48, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Robson change

Hello Peter. Thanks for your continuing edits to the article. I ran the "tool" over it after your edits here, and compared it to my sandbox2 which contained the version before your edits here. The Fry level remains the same, and the Flesch index has increased by just 0.1 to 55.3. I remain to be convinced that further edits will get this even close to your desired level of 70. What do you think? The Rambling Man (talk) 09:54, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is a challenge - looking at the Fry grid it is certainly the complex words that push the score up. So I have been playing with this tool [1] (which is a good one sometimes) looking at the article in detail. It gives Flesch scores for:
  • Intro: 71.5
  • Early life: 71.9
  • PLaying career: 71.1
  • Managerial career: 65.2
  • Life outside football: 64.8
  • Honours: 53.4

An overall score came up as 67.1 (without including the tables). This is very different to the toolserver version. And it is closer to my "70". Other factors need to be considered - one is the use of football jargon, which increases the complexity. It would be reasonable to assume that someone who was going to read an article on Bobby Robson would be familiar with football, even if they spoke another language. This is probably different for the Mosque article where I would think its audience would be people with no background in Islam.

So let me get ready to support the Robson article - two important things still to fix, the wikt links for "consecutive" and "resigned" do not lead to existing pages.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:17, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

So what do you propose for future articles? These scores are way different to the toolserver which is recommended. And it certainly appears that tables have a drastic effect on the indices. The Rambling Man (talk) 12:35, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
For the sake of interest, before your and my edits...
  • Intro: 68.50
  • Early life: 68.05
  • Playing career: 70.42
  • Managerial career: 61.41
  • Life outside football: 65.12 (this has got worse since our edits...)
  • Honours:47.47
Average without tables... 63.5 ... very, very different from the toolserver score which you used as evidence to oppose. Out of interest, are any of these tools actually accredited? How do we know what they're doing? The Rambling Man (talk) 12:44, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I checked the toolserver score with a version of the page without tables and got this result [2] which is fairly close to other tests. This means we will need to be careful about test scores on pages that include large amounts of non text information. I don't know about how/if the tools are accredited. The toolserver tool has a note to say that its syllable counter is inaccurate which is a bit of a worry. I will do some research to find out about reliabilty of the various available tests.--Peterdownunder (talk) 01:41, 26 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
So, considering the values for the article before the recent swathe of edits weren't far off what you wanted in the first place, would you now reconsider your oppose? The Rambling Man (talk) 13:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

School Project Question change

Hi Peter, On March 27th, you wrote on my talk page that I could ask you for guidance on using this Wikipedia for a school project. Well, now I need some guidance. Here is the situation: On Friday, June 5th, my students created new entries with school project banners. They did this with the single user account (nufs_jpdept_D3) I created as advised by the page on projects you directed me to. However, to my dismay, user Chenzw deleted all of their entries, writing on my user page that the entries had no information. Is that Wikipedia policy? It seems very unfair to me. I would appreciate a second opinion this matter.

Hi! I was born before the technological age, also.

I tried to start writing a page for people who use ESL. My housemate is from Taiwan and this writing reflects how it is that I talk to him. Could you access it? I do not know if I submitted it correctly. I do not know if there is any use for simple writing like this. Buy the "simple" wiki version was not sufficient for him. He could not read/understand it at all.

Stub Eradication project change

Hi! Thanks for joining. You have rightly understood that building is the right thing to make SEWP better, I'm happy you agree with me. Best, Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 10:50, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I worry that some editors get so excited about deleting - the task is to build and a stub is the first step. Instead of deleting them we should be adding to them, so I like the project. Add a photo, an infobox, an interwiki, a reference, a see also, it's all going to make a better wiki. --Peterdownunder (talk) 10:55, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

My RfB change

Redirect deletion change

Why are you deleting redirects such as Biel, Switzerland? These appear to be very useful (city, country format is a standard way of referring to towns) and aren't covered by any of the quick deletion of redirects rationales. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 12:54, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

The article on Biel was created as Biel, so a redirect from Biel, Switzerland seemed unnecessary and had been listed for a QD. However you are probably quite right, so I will move Biel to Biel, Switzerland to keep the standard formatting in place. --Peterdownunder (talk) 22:49, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bedism change

Peterdownunder:

Bedism is a joke religion, not knowing how many followers it has (even though I would imagine a fair few) it is a joke. I made the mistake of putting it with new age religions when infact I did mean to put it under joke religions, my apologies.

I noticed you deleted a new site I am building about table rock lake with the notation the data was from tablerocklake.us This is partially true but since I own tablerocklake.us, the table rock Lake site can use data from my site. Please note tablerocklake.us is listed as a source for the page.

Now what do I do??

Oh, gosh! Thanks. I was an Ogden fan in my youth, and am glad to see an effort at simplifying/streamlining WP content. Scientific material is a big challenge, because the source material is so dense. I've been looking at the Evolution. There's problems with the language there, despite the star! I'll have a go at rewriting some of it without losing content (I know the subject well).
