Archiving to begin
Hello all!!! I have been given the flag (also known as the green light) to do 50 trial edits of archiving talk pages that use the MiszaBot/Configuration template. My bot is PDLBotArchiver. Your messages are not being thrown away they will be in your archives as they should be based on your settings. You may get a message that my bot edited your talk page or a page you watch and that is fine. If you see any issues please notify me on my talk page not the bots so I can immediately resolve it. Admins - The bot does have an emergency stop button should you need it.
Also to note - there is nothing that needs to be done on your end. It is all handled by the bot. Thanks ~~ Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 04:59, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Vote for Election Compass Statements
Hi all,
Volunteers in the 2022 Board of Trustees election are invited to vote for statements to use in the Election Compass. You can vote for the statements you would like to see included in the Election Compass on Meta-wiki.
An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/disagree/neutral). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.
Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:
July 8 - 20: Volunteers propose statements for the Election CompassJuly 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements- July 23 - August 3: Volunteers vote on the statements
- August 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
- August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
- August 16: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision
The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August
Best,
Movement Strategy and Governance

US vs. USA
Hi all. I’ve noticed an IP editor is going around and changing anything that says US to USA. Does not seem to matter if it’s in an infobox or in the article. What is the correct way? I’ve always used US in infoboxes especially with coordinates because of the way the maps are laid out for pinpointing. I looked at MoS and couldn’t seem to find it or my eyes are getting worse and I didn’t see it. Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 03:07, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- We may not have an official correct way. I usually spell it out in article text because I think abbreviations can be difficult for English learners. In infoboxes, I usually use US. The country is usually called just "United States," without adding "of America," so that makes sense to me. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:16, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- By the way, I see one IP editor doing this, but only on two pages. Is that what you meant by "going around and changing"? -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:18, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Auntof6 No I’ve seen a lot of IP editors doing this the past couple of days. Not sure if it’s the same person jumping IPs or different people doing this. That is why I was asking. Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 03:48, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
Request for comment - PDLBotArchiver
Hi fellow Wikipedians ~ I’ve been informed that for any public page (i.e., Simple Talk, etc) that I need to gain community consensus.
Current Issues:
- User:SassoBot has not ran in a while and requires a manual start. Since the bot owner is busy it is up in the air as to when the next time it will run.
Resolution:
- I have developed User:PDLBotArchiver that is technically the same. It requires no user configuration changes on the users side.
- On my side, for this page, I would need to allow my bot to work next to SassoBot so pages start archiving again. All tests are successful and the bot has full approval to run it.
- This RfC is strictly to archive Simple Talk and no other pages. Thanks and I look forward to the responses.
Responses and questions
- I think the bot should be used to archive simple talk, and any other WP: pages where it would be useful. 14 days is okay for archival time. Lights and freedom (talk) 04:40, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Lights and freedom: I don't think anyone is suggesting changing the archival time, so whatever bot is doing the archive can use the time that has been in effect all along. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:01, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- That's fine. I didn't really see why this community discussion was necessary so I just gave my opinion. Lights and freedom (talk) 05:02, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Lights and freedom Because it is required due to someone placing the restriction of the bot on the page. If it wasn’t restricted I wouldn’t need the consensus. But all I need is a yes I can or a no I cannot. Nothing else in the configuration changes unless an admin or higher changes it. Arbitrary section break
- Since this matter has been brought up, I am wondering why we even have the {{bots}} template on this page? Support for this template is on a per-implementation basis, so you must either use a framework that is {{bots}} aware, or explicitly account for it in your bot's code. Is there any currently approved bot (other than archive bots) that would ever be editing this page (be it accidental or not), and would need opting out of via the use of the {{bots}} tmeplate? Chenzw Talk 15:40, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Chenzw I believe the signing bot would also edit this page, but since SassoBot is the only authorized one, User:Cewbot won't sign the comments either. IMHO it should be allowed to do that. I cannot think of any other bots that would run on this page based on our approved ones. There may be global ones, but I am not sure. Finding Fanon (now with 100% less fish)
Quoting from here, but with tweaks:
- It seems that specific cartoons (which are not mainstream) on Simple English Wikipedia are often target to users adding in their own "fanon", such as an early change in the page for Numberjacks containing details that it was created by Jean-Yves Raimbaud (who couldn't have been alive in 2000), that it was a Xilam production with employees like Hugo Gittard and Marc Du Pontavice and that it had American voice actors...
- This also happens with small details, like Oggy and the Cockroaches: The Movie being "produced" by Illumination, or large changes like Taffy having a large voice cast, some of whom mentioned people like Tom Kenny and Phil LaMarr (unlike the dub's official cast), or even an entire redundant page, filled with false information. (Happened with Oggy too.)
- Like, it's so weird. This is Wikipedia, where it's used to display enough correct information on media. If you wanted to make fanon so much, there's Fandom. As such, I'm seeing if a better approach to fanon would be agreeable, with helpful pages (like essays) and all.
I've been trying to track anything "fanon"-y down for the past 2 hours now, but for now, I give you all this. You're welcome. --WannurSyafiqah74 (talk) 14:03, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- @WannurSyafiqah74: I've moved this thread down, because it is customary to have new threads go at the bottom of the discussion page.
- Indeed, a lot of our articles about cartoons and children's show could definitely fare better. We have had probably over a dozen deletion discussions about fake TV shows, movies and entertainment companies this year alone. — *Fehufangą ♮ ✉ Talk page 14:13, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

I won't be surprised if there are a lot more cases gone unnoticed, from other users/IPs. Chenzw Talk 15:40, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- @User:Chenzw: I found out the SPA linked to some fan-made movie called "Pippi & Equestria Girls". The link goes to FANON WIKI, which just baffles me on how they decided to go here. That, and I'm not sure if the person also pretends Paramount does not exist. --WannurSyafiqah74 (talk) 10:07, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, that's fine. Maybe better protection on specific articles and restricted article creation would do. And if there's enough "fanon", maybe a list of Wikipedia hoaxes like on the original Wikipedia? The "hoax museum" on Wikipedia bring up articles extant for several years, including fake TV shows and such. WannurSyafiqah74 (talk) 05:39, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

- I just checked. Compared to the original/regular Wikipedia, definitely some suspicious names there. Definitely needs page protection. WannurSyafiqah74 (talk) 06:59, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

If we left aside universities which promoted religions (all of the above), we'd still have Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. You'll remember that Plato was specifically condemned for promoting disbelief in the gods (that was the actual charge against him). That's 4th century B.C. I think we can be sure the ancient Egyptians had some kind of organisation for training their priests, but I'm not familiar with that literature. Macdonald-ross (talk) 20:16, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Simple words
Hi, Over at Waterloo Road (TV series) it currently says in the lead "the show was recommissioned for an eleventh series, with production returning to the Greater Manchester area." - Should the word "recommissioned" be replaced with a simpler word and should the word "Synopsis" further down also be replaced ?,
- I would assume yes for both but I don't know what they should be replaced with (if they should), Many thanks, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 22:36, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
- You would need to do more than replace word for word. Recast the whole sentence, for example: "There will be another series, produced in the Greater Manchester area again". Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:08, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Macdonald-ross, You sir are amazing thank you so much!, I'll be honest I never thought of replacing the whole sentence - Just thought I needed to replace a word only, I'll replace it now, Many thanks for your help greatly appreciated, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 12:50, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Merge help essays
I think that Wikipedia:Words to avoid in Simple English and Help:Translate English into Simple English are very similar. It seems silly to have a page that only lists one word to avoid, especially when there are more suggestions available on another page. Should we merge them? - The top of your "My changes" list with "Find changes" expanded so we can see what options you have in effect. (There could be some option that's suppressing your 4 August entry.)
- The part of the "My changes" display that spans your 4 August entry (that is, it includes changes both before and after the spot where that change should appear)

Goodness, what a mess! They all refer to the same demi-god. I want to tidy this up by having one page, since they all refer to the same mythical figure. There's no question that the Greek name came first, and there's no question the Latin name is better known.
En wiki deals with this by having four separate pages and a disambig. I think we should have one page. Your thoughts, please. Macdonald-ross (talk) 06:52, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- Heracles is a redirect to Herakles, so we really just have two (unless there's another page you didn't list). Heracles/Herakles is Greek, while Hercules is Roman. En wiki has separate articles on them, because some of the mythology is different. I think it would be simpler to describe the two on separate pages rather than having one article where we have to point out differences. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:57, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

No approval
I do not see an approval request for the bot “Bot873“ to run an archive on simple. Due to this, please stop it from running immediately as it violates the Wikipedia bot policy by not having approval from the community to run on user pages. An admin, let alone a global sysop, should know they are not allowed to do this and they are not above the rules as much as they think they are.
- Please ignore this message, an IP has post it with intentions to distract us. Also the bot is approved so no more questions.--DRC (User:TTP1233) (talk . e-mail . contrib) 04:39, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- @TTP1233 It was not approved by the community on simple for archiving or else it would have been doing it for years instead of four other bots doing it. So you are wrong! Try again. I’ll make sure to point this out to WMF since this is an abuse of his powers just like reading peoples DMs on IRC and their emails sent through WP. 2600:387:15:1118:0:0:0:9 (talk) 14:20, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Delay of the 2022 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election
Hi all,
I am reaching out to you today with an update about the timing of the voting for the Board of Trustees election.
As many of you are already aware, this year we are offering an Election Compass to help voters identify the alignment of candidates on some key topics. Several candidates requested an extension of the character limitation on their responses expanding on their positions, and the Elections Committee felt their reasoning was consistent with the goals of a fair and equitable election process.
To ensure that the longer statements can be translated in time for the election, the Elections Committee and Board Selection Task Force decided to delay the opening of the Board of Trustees election by one week - a time proposed as ideal by staff working to support the election.
Although it is not expected that everyone will want to use the Election Compass to inform their voting decision, the Elections Committee felt it was more appropriate to open the voting period with essential translations for community members across languages to use if they wish to make this important decision.
The voting will open on August 23 at 00:00 UTC and close on September 6 at 23:59 UTC.
Please find this message translated in additional languages here.
Best regards,
On behalf of the Elections Committee
What's with these IP editors editing film and television articles, and how do we fix it?
A minor problem the last year or so has been IP editors adding unsourced film and TV information to articles. I don't know if it's one LTA doing it, or a group of people acting in good faith or whatever, it's getting to become a bigger problem. Several list articles of television programming had to be semi-protected due to these IPs insisting that their version of the article was correct. What do we do about this? -- Derpdart56 (talk) 18:09, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
- I say we need to get Wikiproject Television up and running again. Take stock of what we have and improve it. Derpdart56 (talk) 15:53, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- I would do it, but I've got Wikiproject Video Games to run, and I don't think running two at once is advisible. Derpdart56 (talk) 15:54, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

We are left still wanting an archive bot. I've offered up Bot873 until Sassobot comes back to work. After a successful trial and first authorized run, I wanted to write here shine a light on a few details.
Check your archiving bot configs
This is to remind everyone that if you are using the {{bots}} template on your talk page, you need to check your configs. Currently Bot873 will only run in the User talk namespace where there is a {{User:MiszaBot/config}} (see User:MiszaBot/config) set AND there is either no {{bots}} template at all or where the {{bots}} template is used like this: {{bots}}, {{bots|allow=all}}, or {{bots|allow=Bot873}}
.
The bot will ignore all pages that use {{nobots}} or use the {{bots}} template with |allow=Sassobot
, deny=all
, or deny=Bot873
.
If you are new to archiving your talkpages auto-magically, there are several examples on the User:MiszaBot/config page and practical implementations on various pages.
RfC #1: Use of the bots template in Wikipedia namespace
The {{bots}} template is currently used on many Wikipedia namespace pages in conjunction with {{User:MiszaBot/config}}. Currently, the {{bots}} template is explicitly only allows Sassobot (allow=Sassobot
). This will prevent Bot873 from running on those pages. To proceed with archiving operations, the community will need to decide on one of the following:
- Remove the {{bots}} template from all Wikipedia namespace pages and use {{nobots}} where bot activity should be specifically forbidden, if required.
- Remove
allow=Sassbot
from the {{bots}} templates that are currently on Wikipedia namespace pages. This would implicitly allow bot activity from any approved bot. - Append the {{bots}} templates used in the Wikipedia namespace with
allow=Sassobot,Bot873
to allow either bot to archive the page with the template.
Support
- Support Option 1 since bots require approval already to run on this project, I feel like explicitly using {{bots}} template to allow or the {{nobots}} or {{bots|deny=all}} to disallow bot activity is redundant. Especially since {{User:MiszaBot/config}} has to be set to configure archiving anyway. Operator873 connect 05:54, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

RfC #2: Bot873 to archive project/Wikipedia pages
With a successful first production run, Bot873 is ready to be offered to the community to take up duties archiving project/Wikipedia pages as needed. Once RfC #1 is settled, the bot is ready to take over from Sassobot until such time as Sassobot returns. With community consent, Bot873 will happily get to work. However, to repeat, RfC #1 above will directly affect this proposal.

Requesting move of Murugan to Kartikeya in line with English wikipedia. Redtigerxyz (talk) 11:05, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'm facing problem to move as Kartikeya is made as redirect page. @TDKR Chicago 101 can you please do the needful? DRC (User:TTP1233) (talk . e-mail . contrib) 11:14, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- @TTP1233 When moving a page from A to B, where B is a redirect page, there are two possible scenarios:
- B was created as a redirect, and has always been a redirect in its history:
- As this page never had significant content to begin with, A can be moved to B without any problem
- B is currently a redirect, but it wasn't a redirect at some point in its history, and/or it was not created as a redirect:
- To move page A to B, B has to be deleted first. Tag it {{db-g6}}. After an admin decides to delete the target page, page A can be moved to B
- B was created as a redirect, and has always been a redirect in its history:
- in this case you'd want to tag Kartikeya with {{db-g6}}. — *Fehufangą ♮ ✉ Talk page 22:48, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

It's better to reconstruct it like Template:Lang-de or Template:Lang-zh.--迴廊彼端 (talk) 02:08, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
- Macdonald-ross, can you restore Category:Articles containing Uighur-language text? This (with an I, not a Y) is the name used on enwiki. I believe I can easily fix this problem by adjusting {{Lang-ug}}. Lights and freedom (talk) 17:58, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for User:Macdonald-ross's and User:Hockeycatcat's help however there are still some things to do. There are still some articles in Category:Articles containing Uighur-language text because some problems of modules and templates. I found some clues in Module:Lang/data however I don't know how to fix them and only admins' can edit them. Please help. 迴廊彼端 (talk) 16:27, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Discussion on Vector (2022) skin
Hello, I would like to bring your attention that an discussion is started already for changing the default skin to vector (2022 version) at English Wikipedia (en:Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Defining a process for the discussion of making Vector 2022 the new default). The new one looks good to me, but still I want the feedback to all of you regarding on this new skin be default in this wiki. I see the testwiki has made the new skin as default. Revised Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct
Hello everyone,
The Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines Revisions committee is requesting comments regarding the Revised Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period will be open from 8 September 2022 until 8 October 2022.
The Committee collaborated to revise these draft guidelines based on input gathered from the community discussion period from May through July, as well as the community vote that concluded in March 2022. The revisions are focused on the following four areas:
- To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the UCoC training;
- To simplify the language for more accessible translation and comprehension by non-experts;
- To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
- To review the balancing of the privacy of the accuser and the accused
The Committee requests comments and suggestions about these revisions by 8 October 2022. From there, the Revisions Committee anticipates further revising the guidelines based on community input.
Find the Revised Guidelines on Meta, and a comparison page in some languages.
Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome comments in any language on the Revisions Guideline Talk Page. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at local discussions, or during conversation hours. There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft guidelines; please see Meta times and details: Conversation hours
The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large number of communities. If you do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations. Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee every two weeks. The summaries will be published here.

All details are on Meta; your support in translating the message and getting the word out is welcome, as usual.
Bonus! They have a mini-survey for you (also on Meta). Please consider taking a few minutes to let them know what you would like to see covered in future meetings. You can leave your thoughts on the Meta talk page.
For everything related to this announcement and the event, please contact Karolin Siebert - not me! Kind regards, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 19:27, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
Material
Hello! I just noticed that this page is more of a definition and not a specific topic that an article can expand on. Should I add a deletion template? I'm just looking for input on this page, so I don't do something like put up a good article for deletion. Sincerely, Midknight of the Abyss (talk) 14:44, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, If you think that the definition isn't good, and that improving it to a point where it is decent is difficult; or that there's little "encyclopedic substance", then you should put the article up for deletion (articles also survive deletion discussions). If however you think that if you take half an hour and come up with something keepable, that's the preferred way to go, though. Eptalon (talk) 15:10, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

Red Link help
Good evening, everyone. I just wanted to ask if some would help remove red links or make articles for red links on some articles. It just makes the article look bad and I would appreciate it if you helped me! Thank you! SoyokoAnis - talk 01:25, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- @SoyokoAnis Hello. As ugly as they look, red links, if they point to potentially helpful articles, shouldn't be removed from articles. — *Fehufangą ♮ ✉ Talk page 01:30, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Fehufanga Red links tend to stay on articles for months or maybe years. Especially on some of the articles, I created. Infact, Simple Wiki's small amount of members makes it hard to get any collaboration done. For example, why create a red-linked article when you can make one that you're more interested in by yourself? SoyokoAnis - talk 02:52, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Descent categories on simplewiki
I have a question about the ethnic groups/descent categories on simplewiki. MathXplore and Auntof6 said that those categories are not allowed here, according to this discussion. *Fehufangą said its overcategorization, according to Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion/Requests/2022/Category:Hispanic_and_Latino_American_people.
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Category_names#Heritage says "The standard form for categories by ancestry, culture, or ethnicity is "FOOian people of BARian descent", where "FOOian" is the person's nationality (country of citizenship) and "BARian" is the person's ethnic ancestry (such as Category:Irish people of Ghanaian descent and Category:American people of German descent)."
- Does anyone think the "ethnic-country" (or descent) categories on enwiki are allowed here? 2600:6C40:5400:5E68:C0C8:3090:85D9:4BDF (talk) 02:20, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
CopyPatrol for simplewiki
Hello everyone. After we have noticed more copyright violations recently (with some going back nearly a year) I thought about possibly bringing CopyPatrol to simplewiki. If you don't know what CopyPatrol is: you can see what it's like on https://copypatrol.toolforge.org - you are shown recent edits that may be copyright violations, with the URL that editor may be copying from. You can compare the URL and edit, and decide if no action is needed (for example, if it's a wiki-mirror), or whether the page needs to be fixed. It's currently used on the English, French and Spanish Wikipedias. This tool would allow us to easily find copyright violations sooner (hours/days after they are added) instead of sometimes only finding them after several months. So, are we interested in bringing this tool to this Wikipedia and, if we are, how many people are interested in actively using it? --Ferien (talk) 14:21, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Discussion about categories related to chemicals
This may not be the most interesting topic, but it's important so that people can easily find articles. We currently have Category:Chemicals and Category:Chemical compounds, and we should clearly define what belongs in each. For example, "glue", "petroleum", and "antifreeze" are not specific chemical compounds, so where do they belong? There are also some categories that are classes of chemical compounds, such as Category:Hydrocarbons. This contains specific compounds/molecules like methane, but also other things like gasoline. Then there are the large number of biological molecules, mainly in four groups: Category:Lipids, Category:Proteins (and their component amino acids), Category:Carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. Enwiki has en:Category:Biomolecules for those. Hemoglobin is an example of a protein that's a compound, but an article like protein folding is not a chemical compound itself though it relates to them. Another note is Category:Polymers should be considered, both for the biological and artificial polymers. Finally, there are grounds of chemicals by purpose/effect, such as Category:Pigments and Category:Poisons, which should be under a consistent supercategory. This is all just to give you an idea of what the issues are.
So together, let's try to clearly define all of these. Lights and freedom (talk) 05:15, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
- I am not a chemist, so I may have a biased opinion: Pretty much everything is a chemical, now if the thing is made of molecules of two or more substances, these are chemical compounds: Examples are nitric acid or sulfuric acid, both widely used. As to antifreeze: this is likely a class of substances, and might be worth a category. Note that certain fish also make antifreeze, the Sea wolves (en). So, there might be other classifications.--Eptalon (talk) 06:51, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
- Would it be beneficial to have a new category for "Biomolecules"? Lights and freedom (talk) 05:36, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Chemical products is a possibility. Macdonald-ross (talk) 13:24, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Spam of US cities
Hello, I was looking through Short pages in the Special pages category, and I saw a whole lot of US city articles with this text: Blank (the city) is a city in Blank (the state) in the United States. There are more than 50 of these. Can someone help me filter through these and determine what cities need a page and which ones don't? Midknight of the Abyss (talk) 16:29, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Midknight1342 May it be that all these cities warrant a page. There's a lot of them but I'm sure with the help of other simpledians, you can edit them without removing them. SoyokoAnis - talk 16:31, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- I believe a good chunk of those were from unauthorized bot edits by a now blocked user known as User:Gay Yong Hernandez under an IP. Derpdart56 (talk) 17:31, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Derpdart56: That doesn't mean they should be deleted, though, in case anyone was thinking that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:13, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Midknight1342: If they are real cities, then they all can have a page. We definitely prefer to have more information, but cities, towns, and similar populated places are considered notable just because they exist. See en:WP:GEOLAND for the guideline. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:16, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Yep. We have someone who, every week or so, makes a bunch of stubs about Vermont towns. I get pinged in the IRC feed every time. It's not very fun, but they are notable (and there's so many of them). Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 22:53, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Deletion timestamp
Does 7 days really need to be how long it is until a deletion consensus is decided? A lot of discussions barely get any attention. Would 5 days be a better timestamp? SoyokoAnis - talk 16:57, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- A lack of attention would warrant a longer discussion time. However, considering current admin activity, the real discussion time seems far longer than 7 days. Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 22:53, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Proposing simplification desk
I think this wiki would benefit from having a dedicated page where people can ask for help with making things simpler. As being simple is the entire reason it exists. I think it should be separate from Simple talk because some editors might not want to be burdened with constant messages on this page that they might not care about. And there are also admins' talk pages that get bombarded with questions like this. This could be a separate page in Wikipedia namespace, or it could be a part of User:Thesixthstaff/WikiProject Simplification. Alternatively, we could just use Simple talk, but I want to get a sense if others are ok with constant questions about minor things here. Thanks, Lights and freedom (talk) 17:15, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- A benefit is that people would not have to respond right away. They could respond whenever they got time. Lights and freedom (talk) 17:21, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- I think making it a part of WikiProject Simplification might be a good idea but using Simple talk isn't too bad - simplification requests aren't taking up too much space here. --Ferien (talk) 20:15, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- We have a tag to put on relevant articles. Historically this project has not supported creating additioanl noticeboards, and I don't think something like this is necessary. Organizing drives to simplify tagged articles, however, is very much something that could be productive. Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 02:19, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- It's more so we can discuss what would be simpler. Someone might think they're simplifying, but they're actually replacing longer words with more complicated phrasal verbs, for example. Or maybe there are situations when the phrasal verbs would be easier. There are a few editors here who have worked with English-language learners and have professional knowledge of what is more easily understood, but many of us don't have that experience. Lights and freedom (talk) 02:48, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, I see, so you're talkinga bout whether it would be better to say "from nose to rear end" or "from nose to anus" when talking about snout-vent length (a way to say how big an amphibian or reptile is without involving its tail or big hind legs). Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:42, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting, I tried something similar about ten years ago. I see the userbox I created for it is being used here. I'm happy to see the idea for such a project still around. Kansan (talk) 22:39, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Darkfrog24: "Read end" wouldn't be a good term because:
- It's slang.
- It's mostly used in humans, not animals.
- When used for humans, it means the buttocks rather than the anus.
- I know it's the term used in Snout-vent length, but we should probably change that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 23:31, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Infobox settlement vs. custom infoboxes for states in a country
A lot of pages are currently using a custom infobox for states (or provinces, prefectures, departments, etc...) within a country. For example, Fukushima Prefecture uses Template:Infobox Prefecture Japan, Brandenburg uses Template:Infobox German state, Ontario uses Template:Infobox province or territory of Canada, and so on. These templates are usually a wrapper for Template:Infobox settlement. However, others use Infobox settlement directly, such as Nuevo León, Acre (state), and Chubut. Some don't use any version of Infobox settlement at all (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes for example).
Many pages for states are currently missing a template entirely (such as Shiga Prefecture), and there are still more which don't exist here and need to be created or simplified from ENWiki. So, when adding an infobox to pages like these, should we use the appropriate country's template where possible (i.e Infobox Prefecture Japan for Shiga Prefecture), or use Infobox settlement directly? And for countries which seem to use a mix of the two, should we standardize it so the articles for every state in a country use the same template? Tymewalk (talk) 05:06, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- Good question. I don't know that there's any rule about that. The advantage of using the more-specific templates (including the wrapper templates) is that many things are automatically specified and other things are easier to specify. The disadvantage is that we have to maintain templates that could be replaced by the base settlement infobox. Enwiki seems to have fewer templates that call the settlement infobox, although they have some that we don't.
- Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes uses the geobox template, which should be replaced with an appropriate infobox template. I was working on replacing it when a real life situation intervened. I plan to get back to it, but of course anyone else who would like to do that replacement is also welcome to. I've just been replacing it with the infobox used on enwiki, then addressing any issues caused by the replacement. Once all uses of the geobox template have been replaced, we can eliminate it as was done on enwiki. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:40, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
I need help with images!
Hello there, I am fairly new to Wikipedia and all, and when I added in an image, it was far away from the header I wanted it to be in. Does anyone know how to align them? DawnTheFirst (talk) 06:30, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
- @DawnTheFirst: I should be able to help you with that. Can you give an example? Maybe add the image and save the page, then reply here and point to the problem? -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:11, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
- Alright, here is an example:
- Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Pharetra convallis posuere morbi leo urna. Dignissim diam quis enim lobortis. Pellentesque habitant morbi tristique senectus. Molestie ac feugiat sed lectus vestibulum mattis ullamcorper. Consequat mauris nunc congue nisi vitae suscipit. Quis enim lobortis scelerisque fermentum. Egestas tellus rutrum tellus pellentesque eu tincidunt. Condimentum vitae sapien pellentesque habitant.
- As you can see, it kind of takes a big chunk of of the text space, and I want it aligned right. DawnTheFirst (talk) 00:58, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
- @DawnTheFirst: This will be easier if we code it the way it would be on a page, without the indentation used on a talk page. I created User:Auntof6/sandbox3 for this, so go there and see a couple of examples that might be what you're looking for. Feel free to add sections if you want me to look at other alternatives.
- A couple of other notes:
- Usually there should be a caption with an image. I'll demonstrate how to do that on the sandbox page.
- Usually the file would be coded on a separate line from the text and/or headings around it. I'll demonstrate that on the sandbox page as well.
- Hope this helps. Let me know if these aren't what you need. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:18, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Jackie Kennedy issues
There are still a few grammatical issues with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis which I mentioned at the bottom of the talk page. Allowing Wikitext editors to preview changes in realtime
Community Tech has introduced a new beta feature. It allows editors to preview their changes side by side when writing in wikitext. The goal is to make it easier to review changes while editing. This was the wish number four of the Community Wishlist Survey 2021.
What does this feature change?
In the 2010 wikitext editor toolbar, a new button appears with the label “Preview”. The button enables a side by side comparison showing what the published content would look like. You can see an illustrative example on the screenshot.
We would like to check if the editing experience improves. If it does, we will make this change available for everyone by default.
What do I need to do?
If you want to try out our feature, make sure the New Wikitext mode beta feature is DISABLED. Feel free to provide feedback about the impact this new feature has on your editing experience.
See also: the original wish • the project page.
Thank you! ––– STei (WMF) (talk) 17:20, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
Enquiry on Patroller rights
Hi, I would like to get the patroller flag on my account. I just wanted to know how much approx. pages do I need to create at least. DMK-C5 (talk) 13:41, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
- @DMK-C5: There is no set number. That right is given to trusted users who have 1) done a reasonable amount of good vandalism fighting and 2) shown that the articles they create do not need to be patrolled. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:31, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
- I see. Since I have the eligibility in clause 1, I will focus more on clause 2. DMK-C5 (talk) 05:43, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
The Vector 2022 skin as the default in two weeks?
Hello. I'm writing on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Web team. In two weeks, we would like to make the Vector 2022 skin the default on this wiki.
We have been working on it for the past three years. So far, it has been the default on more than 30 wikis, including sister projects, all accounting for more than 1 billion pageviews per month. On average 87% of active logged-in users of those wikis use Vector 2022.
It would become the default for all logged-out users, and also all logged-in users who currently use Vector legacy. Logged-in users can at any time switch to any other skins. No changes are expected for users of these skins.
About the skin
[Why is a change necessary] The current default skin meets the needs of the readers and editors as these were 13 years ago. Since then, new users have begun using Wikimedia projects. The old Vector doesn't meet their needs.
[Objective] The objective for the new skin is to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. It draws inspiration from previous requests, the Community Wishlist Surveys, and gadgets and scripts. The work helped our code follow the standards and improve all other skins. We reduced PHP code in Wikimedia deployed skins by 75%. The project has also focused on making it easier to support gadgets and use APIs.
[Changes and test results] The skin introduces a series of changes that improve readability and usability. The new skin does not remove any functionality currently available on the Vector skin.
- The sticky header makes it easier to find tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%.
- The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped to different sections of the page 50% more than with the old table of contents. It also looks a bit different on talk pages.
- The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on.
- The skin does not negatively affect pageviews, edit rates, or account creation. There is evidence of increases in pageviews and account creation across partner communities.
[Try it out] Try out the new skin by going to the appearance tab in your preferences and selecting Vector 2022 from the list of skins.
- I don't know what the icons mean. At least include words.Kdammers (talk) 19:26, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Kdammers, thank you for telling me about the issue you're facing. What icons do you mean, specifically? SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 01:12, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
How can editors change and customize this skin?
It's possible to configure and personalize our changes. We support volunteers who create new gadgets and user scripts. Check out our repository for a list of currently available customizations, or add your own.
Our plan
If no large concerns are raised, we plan on deploying in the week of October 3, 2022. If your community would like to request more time to discuss the changes, hit the button and write to us. We can adjust the calendar.
Also, if you'd like ask our team anything, if you have questions, concerns, or additional thoughts, please ping me here or write on the talk page of the project. We will also gladly answer! See our FAQ. Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 02:54, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

- Hello everyone, we are not making the change this week. We decided to start with a smaller number of even smaller wikis. I'm sorry for confusion! According to the current plan, we would make the change in the week of October 17. If you're interested in the project, I'm encouraging you to subscribe to the newsletter, and keep an eye on the timeline of deployments. Your thoughts on that are most welcome! Total Erasure
I created an article a few days ago. It was challenged. I responded this morning, explaining why the article "Belmont 112" should not be a speedy delete. Less than six hours later, the article is gone. It is not even in my list of contributions. I did not get a response to my explanation as to why it should not be deleted.
I think this is wrong for two reasons. First, in this specific case, an article was totally erased without any trace far less than a working day after a wait explanation was posted. And this was done without my being given any notification of counterarguments or even that there would actually be a removal. Second, in general, I think it is a bad practice to have an algorithm that totally erases any trace of a removed article from the creator's contributions list (Maybe the article exists somewhere, but it is well hidden, since it doesn't come up in a search). Kdammers (talk) 19:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Kdammers: To address your last point first, you can see pages you created that have been deleted. Click on "My changes" at the top of any page. On that screen, click on the "deleted user contributions" link near the top.
- As for the deletion itself, you can ask for it to be reviewed at WP:Deletion review. I think you have a good case to have it restored. MathXplore placed the quick delete request because the text was the same as the enwiki article, and Macdonald-ross deleted it. However, it's okay for articles here to be the same as enwiki as long as 1) the language is simple enough and 2) attribution is given. Very little needed to be done to simplify the language, and it would be an easy matter to give attribution. (I know you intended to post it here instead of on enwiki, but since it was on enwiki first you still need to give attribution.)
- Hope this helps. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:51, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Auntof6 and Kdammers: You will actually have to press on "logs" where you will be able to see the log of your page creations. The "deleted user contributions" link only appears for administrators. --Ferien (talk) 20:56, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Ferien: Oops, thanks for the clarification. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:05, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Auntof6 According to en:Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Where attribution is not needed, it's not necessary to attribute if you're copying only your own text. Unless there's a different rule on simplewiki, Kdammers would not have to attribute. Lights and freedom (talk) 21:03, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Lights and freedom: Looks like you're right. Thanks for the note. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:05, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- In line with this, I've restored the article. Also noting that QDs do not go through deletion review; contested QDs (with valid reason) cannot be actioned as QDs are exclusively for non-controversial deletions. Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 22:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Then maybe we need to change the verbiage on the wait template which says "Note that this request is not a guarantee, and the page may still be deleted if it meets the quick deletion criteria, or if an explanation is not provided very soon." -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:49, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- I'd say the verbiage is fine. Contested QDs without a valid reason ("I think my cat is notable!") can still be QD'd, so it's not a guarantee for those cases.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 23:32, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

A new bot idea
There’s a bot to stop vandalizing, and what if there was a bot to create and simplify articles. Here’s an idea. Basically, you just take from an article in another language, that already exists, and translate it to English. Then translate it to Simple English. I feel that this would be a nice idea. Maybe a bot, to automatically simplify topics with {{complex}} SikiWtideI (talk) 22:41, 7 October 2022 (UTC)SikiWtideI
- @SikiWtideI: I don't believe that automatically simplifying articles is possible. Even the content translator, which supposedly "translates" to simple language, doesn't really simplify the way we want here.
- As for a bot to create articles, it was decided in the past that we don't want that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:43, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Auntof6: Oh, ok. I guess the simplifying part would be hard. The website Simple English Wikipedia uses dosen’t recognize every word, and is a little difficult.
List of Sharpie markers colors
I am looking at this, and thinking it is in effect an advertisement, even though prices are not listed. I'm sure we have met this kind of thing before. What do others think? I lean towards deletion. Macdonald-ross (talk) 16:44, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
I don’t feel like it is. This is showing all colors in Sharpie markers, while advertising for it would be showing prices. I do feel that there is a lot of items. SikiWtideI (talk) 22:01, 8 October 2022 (UTC)SikiWtideI

More mobile stuff could be better
So, here is something I have seen.
When clicking on a notification that redirects to a page, it will not open in the mobile version if the user is on “simple.m.wikipedia.org”. I’d also like HotCat to be seen on mobile. SikiWtideI (talk) 00:26, 9 October 2022 (UTC)SikiWtideI
- Not much can be done there, the Minerva skin (default on mobile) has...a lot of difficulty with providing editors the buttons they need. I currently use Timeless (regardless of mobile or desktop), which works great, but new Vector seems to work pretty well on mobile too. Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 21:38, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
List of Wanted Pages
... is generally useless for our purposes at least, because it is entirely dominated by place-names. Most of these would never be important to us. We still haven't got good pages on all capital cities! London is still only so-so. Macdonald-ross (talk) 10:45, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Macdonald-ross: We don't seem to have Wikipedia:List of Wanted Pages, or even Wikipedia:List of wanted pages. Do you mean Wikipedia:Requested pages, or maybe Special:WantedPages? -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:16, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- I was looking at Special:WantedPages. Macdonald-ross (talk) 05:24, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- Seems like eliminating incoming red links from templates and making it only incoming red links from the running text of the articles would help. Possible? See Prototribosphenida. --Gotanda (talk) 09:42, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
- I was looking at Special:WantedPages. Macdonald-ross (talk) 05:24, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- Gotanda's idea might work well. We'ld have to think about the redlinks on boxes (which are regularly updated by D.J. Sasso). At present I hand-simplify many of these, because they are generally far too complex for our readers. There's definitely a general problem that we can and do simplify text, but surrounding it are these rather scary boxes. En wiki boxes are far more sophisticated than they were 20 years ago. But kids are just the same! Macdonald-ross (talk) 12:25, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Sky whatnots
We have a page Tokyo SkyCity, which En wiki does not have. They have a page Tokyo Skytree which we do not have. They do not seems to be describing the same building, so perhaps someone who knows can set us straight. Macdonald-ross (talk) 15:31, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- I found the en/jawiki article and moved the page per en/ja. MathXplore (talk) 15:38, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Rename for Atlantic Coastal Plain
Hello, I was wondering whether to rename Atlantic coastal plain to Atlantic Plain, so it can be generalized. On enwiki, Atlantic coastal plain is an offshoot of Atlantic Plain. I'm trying to make this a good article since I created it, so can I get some insight from some more experienced editors?
Cheers, Midknight of the Abyss (talk) 16:12, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- Based on en:Physiographic regions of the United States, the Atlantic Plain should also include the Gulf of Mexico plain from Texas to Florida. For some reason, this also includes the continental shelf, which is underwater. The "Coastal Plain" as defined by that page is just the entire plain but without the underwater part. It seems to incorrectly link to "Atlantic Coastal Plain". I think it's incorrect because en:Atlantic Coastal Plain only talks about the Atlantic coast and not the entire plain. It might be better to just have an article at simplewiki that's called Atlantic Plain and includes both the Atlantic coast and the Gulf coast. Lights and freedom (talk) 18:16, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Requested move
A better name for Finding a Mice's Husband would be Finding a Mouse's Husband, with whatever capitalisation is conventional here. I couldn’t see how to move it myself, hence this request. Thanks —Northernhenge (talk) 20:15, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Northernhenge: That would be more grammatically correct in English. However, since it's not an English-language story, maybe the proposed title isn't any more accurate. I just consulted Google Translate, which translates the title from the linked page to "A mouse looking for a sweetheart". Actually, though, the page should probably be deleted because it doesn't show notability.
- By the way, the reason you couldn't see how to move it is probably because you aren't autoconfirmed yet. For that, your account has to be at least 4 days old, which it is, and you need to have made at least 10 edits, which you haven't yet. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:19, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

This user is indeffed on en.wiki for doing the same thing they seem to be doing here: creating a boatload of sports related articles. Does this apply under wp:ONESTRIKE? Or am I jumping the gun on this one? Derpdart56 (talk) 19:31, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

- @Derpdart56:, yes I’m being blocked for sockpuppetry (also nl-wiki). I regret that. A lot. I’m not being blocked for creating a high number of stubs, however a group of people didn’t appreciate it. But also from that I learned and I wouldn’t continue creating huge amount of articles from database sources (Note: I created the total amount of articles I created here over the last months… sometimes per day).

IP blocks under block evasion

- Absolutely not @SoyokoAnis but there is a possibility that a person can use different IPs to do spam changes. For this purpose I asked so. Dibyojyotilet's chat 14:50, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- I guess it depends on whether you can see the IP is evading a block. If they share the behaviour of a blocked user and they share a location, then they would be blocked, but for simply having the same location then no. I'd leave the technical stuff like location of IPs to CUs. --Ferien (talk) 12:29, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
