Unblock request

You declined an unblock request recently, but there were actually two on the page so it is still in the unblock category. --IWI (talk) 19:56, 1 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) In my view they shouldn't be there at all and I am not seeing any purpose for them to display it on their user page, especially considering they have been indefinitely blocked. --IWI (talk) 21:45, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

"Encodings"

I notice we have a category "Encodings", which does not have a main page. What does it mean? As far as I can see, it means nothing more than "coding". It is certainly not a simple word, and I was about to remove it from text when I noticed the category. On En wiki it just redirects to code, and explained as the opposite of decoding. So I think the use of the word in our texts should be deprecated (absolutely not simple), and it should not be a category, but a redirect to category "code". What do you think? WikiBlind has new volunteers ready to help. What can newbies help with?

Hi Auntof6! I want to start by

Thanking You for the incredible work you do!
And we want to invite YOU to be part of the birthday parties we’re hosting.

I’m one of the founding members of wikiBlind.org and we are setting up big volunteer outreach activities. as part of our birthday presents to Wikipedians, past present and future -

including you!

Starting on 15 January 2021, at 8pm UTC / noon Pacific time, we are launching WikiBlind and WikiKind Adventures in WikiWonderlands

We have 1000s of brilliant people around the world, in all the languages, who want to be able to help, and we are inviting blind, visually-impaired and allies to join in our efforts to bring inclusivity and diversity into the communities within wikipedia projects.

We have been trying to figure out who inside wants help - and guides who can welcome and show newbies around through the mazes of complexity it takes in order to be able to help.

I want to send newbies to help with the urgent needs the world has for simple.Wikipedia

Our kids need to be able to more quickly understand what’s inaccessible on the other wikipedias

Could we engage in a dialog about overlapping interests, possibilities and practicalities of bring more people to simple.Wikipedia ?

You can find me on almost all platforms as DrMelGanus - I don’t log into to Wikipedia very often - too difficult to correspond here. I most regularly use WhatsApp, FB Messenger, text messaging or email. I’m not sure who to reach out to and saw you are active here. Please forward me to anyone else you think I should connect with.

We’re turning on the wikiKind outreach activities on January 15, 2021, 8pm UTC / noon Pacific Time, and I very much want to send newbies here to help translate any articles from English or elsewhere into Simple English as one of their experimental experiences. Falling down the rabbit holes on the to[IDs they care about most.

Again, thank you for all you’ve done over the years you’ve been here. Happy to have found you today and crossed paths.

Gratefully, DrMel (talk) 20:30, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Category:Second Gentlemen of the United States

Hey Auntof6, would it be a good idea to create a Category:Second Gentlemen of the United States? EnWiki has the category created for Doug Emhoff whereas here at simple there's no category to identify him as the second gentleman of the US. Or should we not follow enwiki and create a category titled Category:Second Spouse of the United States? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 12:08, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) I would probably make a parent category called Category:Second Spouse of the United States and put the current second lady category in it and put doug in it. While it would be only two entries in it at the moment I think this is a perfect example of WP:IAR. The other option is to just rename the Second Lady category to Second Spouse and put them all in that. Either is probably ok. One is less work both now and in the future when there are more second gentlemen. (ie having to change all the categories on each page, and then splitting the men back out in the furture to their own category) -Djsasso (talk) 12:11, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question

If something is supressed, admins can't see it, and if revdeled admins can see it? --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:02, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @つがる: Only oversighters can see oversighted material. If all admins could see it, it would be the same as revdel. --IWI (talk) 02:04, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I asked this, because it was confusing me on what the terms meant. --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:05, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@つがる: "Suppressed" refers to oversight, only visible to oversighters. Revdel is just like any deletion, and can be seen and restored by any admin. --IWI (talk) 02:06, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Issues with article deletion

Hello,

Please refer to the article in question Christianity in Ethiopia and Eritrea, as the contributor is a global Wikipedian bad faith editor who has continued agenda pushing for over a decade. The case in question is here: Sockpuppet investigations. Also, please look at the archives as well. - TheLionHasSeen (talk) 17:42, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@TheLionHasSeen: I declined the QD request on that article because the reason given ("Refer to Sockpuppet investigation against Hoaeter.") was not one of the reasons that an article can be quickly deleted. For quick deletion, we are restricted to the reasons listed at WP:QD. If you want the article deleted, you can use the RFD process, where other reasons can be specified. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:47, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I shall do so. - TheLionHasSeen (talk) 18:49, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Are you around?

Are you around? We have an AfD that I’m sure you’ve probably seen. All the IP keep votes are the same person. They have made personal attacks and now they just went into the AfD and deleted others comments. Can we get a block on that range for at least 5 days until the AfD is over? Also all votes are delete so possibly even close that thing and end it! Thanks PotsdamLamb (talk) 07:07, 24 February 2021 (UTC) PS I’m mobile so I can’t type out the IPs but they are all the IPv6’s.Reply

This may help Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2021/Amber Martinez PotsdamLamb (talk) 07:11, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @PotsdamLamb: IPs when editing mobile can change frequently, it is not against the rules to use multiple IPs. The putting keep at the beginning of each edit is a common mistake that is not blockable. And deletion discussions do need to run the 7 days. -Djsasso (talk) 18:38, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Djsasso: - I asked for the block due to the persistent personal attacks and the fact that they deleted others' comments from the RfD. Not because of the IPs, however, they do keep adding a new vote, but since IP votes do not count, I have given up. Putting it at the top is ok and I did not ask for a block based on that. I copied it to where it should be after restoring the page back to how it was before they purposefully deleted the comments (the comments from others were in different sections). PotsdamLamb (talk) 18:43, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I realize that. Many admins are watching that discussion, we will act if necessary. -Djsasso (talk)

RfD nomination of Category:Trombones

An editor has requested deletion of Category:Trombones, an article you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2021/Category:Trombones and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Naddruf (talk) 21:25, 4 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Request for suggestions

@Auntof6: Hello Auntof6! Even though the deletion request is set by you, please suggest me the ways to save the articles from getting deleted. Haoreima (talk) 06:48, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: The problem is that nothing in the articles says why the subjects are notable. In other words, why should we have an article about those things? You would need to say why they are notable according to Wikipedia's definition of notability (that would be a claim of notability) and add reliable sources that support those claims. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:01, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Is Google Books link not a reliable one? Besides, in the Wikipedia guidelines, it's said that Google Books link is a highly respected one. Besides, all the links clearly describe what I have written in the article. Haoreima (talk) 07:04, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

BTW, help me to develop. Haoreima (talk) 07:04, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: Here's a little more information. Some of the references in the articles point to websites that show that the books exist, but that's not enough. You need something that shows that the books are notable, or important, in some way. For example, Google Books may be a respected website, but it is respected as a place that stores text of many books. The fact that Google Books has a book doesn't mean that the book is important/notable.
Second, just having references isn't always enough to show notability. The references have to support claims of notability somehow. For example, saying what a book is about doesn't show notability, so having a reference for that doesn't help.
I'm not able to help you develop these articles right now. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:11, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Well, I find some websites, from abebooks.com, goodreads.com and worldcat.com. Among these, I know worldcat is clearly a commercial one. So, please check can we add the other websites? Haoreima (talk) 07:14, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I think Goodreads has information about plot, and reviews written by anyone who read the book who felt like leaving a review. None of that shows notability. For more information, read the notability page I linked above, and English Wikipedia's notability guidelines for books, which are also guidelines here. Those will help you understand what makes a source reliable, and what makes a book notable.
In the meantime, you could ask an admin (including me) to move the articles to your userspace instead of deleting them. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:22, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

What is moving to my userspace? Haoreima (talk) 07:26, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

That means putting the article on a subpage of your userpage, instead of having it as an article. That is done to give you a place to work on the article, like the draft space in English Wikipedia. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:00, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Revert

To me, "Simple English Wikipedia" is grammatically incorrect without "the" before it. "I am editing the English Wikipedia/I am editing English Wikipedia" - the second one sounds incorrect. Thoughts? --IWI (talk) 09:30, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@ImprovedWikiImprovment: To me, leaving off the article sounds better. I looked at the enwiki article, as well as an enwiki article about a Wikipedia in yet another language, and enwiki seems to use both forms. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:50, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Might be a British English thing. To me, the latter sounds wrong. --IWI (talk) 10:58, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
In this case it should not have the as Simple is part of a proper noun as it is a name not an adjective. The capital s gives it away as a noun and not an adjective. If you were using it in an instance where you are using simple as an adjective then you are right it would need the. -Djsasso (talk) 12:40, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Makes sense. So it's either "Simple English Wikipedia" (all words capitalized) or "the simple English Wikipedia" (simple not capitalized). --Auntof6 (talk) 15:48, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I agree with IWI here, the first one reads better. Maybe it is a British English thing... --Ferien (talk) 15:51, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think it's like the words mom and dad. When used as names ("Mom and Dad live in Texas." or "Hi, Mom."), they're capitalized, otherwise ("My mom and dad live in Texas.") they're not. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:01, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
To bring it back to the editing example you would say "I was editing Dune." not "I was editing the Dune." if you were referring to editing Dune (novel). -Djsasso (talk) 20:49, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I decided to take a look at Wiktionary, and Wikipedia can be a proper noun or a noun. What sounds better, There are over five million articles on the English Wikipedia or There are over five million articles on English Wikipedia.? The second example does not really sound right. Whilst saying "I am editing the Wikipedia" would not sound right, "I am editing the English Wikipedia" does sound correct when you say it out loud. --Ferien (talk) 21:02, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes exactly, as I said it is a proper noun. It could be a WP:ENGVAR thing but I am not sure it is. You wouldn't say "There are over five million articles on the English Wikipedia." in Canadian English. I know for sure we were taught not to use the before proper nouns when I was a kid. But even that comes down to whether you are using English as part of the name or as a descriptor. For example "I am editing the simple English Wikipedia" is correct and "I am editing Simple English Wikipedia." is also correct. (I am using Simple as the example instead of just straight English because English itself is a proper noun and always capitalized even as an adjective so it confuses the example.) -Djsasso (talk) 21:15, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) To me "I am editing the Simple English Wikipedia" sounds correct. But I will comply with whatever the guidelines/rules are about this --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 23:48, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@つがる: I think what we're saying is that, if you use the article the, you need to put the word simple in lower case. Reason: if you use the article, then the words "simple English" are both used to modify "Wikipedia" -- in other words, "I work on the simple English Wikipedia" is like saying "I work on the simple English version of Wikipedia". If you don't use the article, as in "I work on Simple English Wikipedia", then you're using "Simple English Wikipedia" as the name of the site, and that makes it all a proper noun that needs to be capitalized. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:59, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Djsasso, Ferien, and つがる: The Simple English Wikipedia is a website, so it is a proper noun. And "I am editing Simple English Wikipedia" at least in my version of English sounds wrong. So does "I am editing English Wikipedia"; there is definitely a missing "the". The name of the website does modify the word "Wikipedia" automatically. Just as you wouldn’t say "I am looking at brown cow", (IMO) you wouldn’t say "I am editing Simple English Wikipedia". Just like much of English, this seems like a unique exception for grammatical reasons. Pubs here have proper nouns, like "Red Lion"; you say "I am going to the Red Lion", not "I am going to Red Lion", even though it’s a proper noun. This is done for grammatical reasons. So, think of a proper noun with an adjective in the name and see if you refer to it with "the". --IWI (talk) 09:53, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ferien: fix ping. --IWI (talk) 09:55, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ImprovedWikiImprovment: The name of the website is "Simple English Wikipedia". Just look at the main page and you'll see it. With some proper nouns, like The Beatles, The Hague, and The New York Times, the word the is part of the name. With this Wikipedia, it isn't, so it isn't required. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:04, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
So if The New York Times was called "New York Times", would you really omit "The"? Think of "en:New York Daily News, which even in the article is referred to as "The..." (as it is in daily speech), because it is grammatically correct; "Daily News" is modified by "New York and "Wikipedia" is modified by "Simple English". Also, in the example I mentioned, "The" would not be part of the title. The only change is it goes from "The New York Times" to "the New York Times". --IWI (talk) 10:19, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't know. It's hard to answer that one because I always hear it with the article the. I know there are other publications that I would never use the article with, such as Reader's Digest and TV Guide. Maybe it's different with newspapers? --Auntof6 (talk) 10:31, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think in those cases, "the" would actually make it more ambiguous. But there are certainly proper nouns that are preceded by "the" for grammatical reasons, and I think the SEWP is one of those cases. Looking at en:English Wikipedia and en:Simple English Wikipedia, consensus seems to agree there. I’m not sure if we are looking at a British English issue, but omitting "the" just because it is a proper noun seems wrong. --IWI (talk) 11:07, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ImprovedWikiImprovment: Well, I don't know what to tell you, then. I guess we just don't agree. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:23, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Works based on the Bible

I'm thinking of a main category title which would carry this idea: all the works which have titles derived from the Bible. En wiki has a main category Works based on the Bible. We might not need subcategories at first. Macdonald-ross (talk) 10:14, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Macdonald-ross:"Titles derived from the Bible" isn't the same as "works based on the Bible". I would think a category for works would be fine, but I'm not sure one based on titles would be good as a category; it might work as a list article, though. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:40, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
If we had the artcles, would movies such as en:The Passion of the Christ (with Mel Gibson, 2004) or en:The First Temptation of Christ (2019), or even en:A Serious Man (Cohen Brothers, 2009) qualify? - What a about music? (such as the Messiah, by Händel)? - Given that at least in former times, the Catholic Church had a lot of music/masses written, wouldn't such a category be too broad?--Eptalon (talk) 10:57, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
And I could go on with painting...en:The Suicide of Saul (by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, 1562), Christ Crucified (by Goya), en:Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus) by Dalì...- In my opinion this category would really become too big to be managable...--Eptalon (talk) 11:27, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

changing would be to is

On the article men who have sex with men, you changed would be to is. Could the reason be that is may be simpler? Angela Kate Maureen 15:30, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela: In this case, it's because it's more accurate. The words would be are conditional; if you're going to use them, you need to say what the condition is. For example, instead of "Even with a condom, anal sex would be risky." you could say "Even with a condom, anal sex would be risky if the condom broke or wasn't used correctly." If you're not going to specify the condition, it's better to just say that it is riskier. --Auntof6 (talk) 15:34, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ritz Crackers

For what reason would Ritz Crackers be categorized under the breads category? Angela Kate Maureen 11:42, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela: They are a cracker, and cracker is categorized under breads. Some questions please

Hi Auntof6 - hope you had a good day. I have a couple questions for you.

  1. How do disambugation pages work? I ask because I came across Category:Articles with links needing disambiguation but I do know how to fix those.
  2. I came across it earlier and can’t find it now. There is a page that lists double redirects. I was able to fix one, I can’t fix the other couple that are on there as I don’t have the proper permission to fix them.
  3. I’ve started doing some category work on articles. What exactly should have the {{commons cat}} on it? As I understand that category means it creates a box stating that commons.Wikipedia has something on it (I.e. a picture or something) Would that be correct?

Thanks, PDL PotsdamLamb (talk) 09:14, 31 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@PotsdamLamb: Some answers:
  1. I assume you mean you don't know how to fix them. You find where the {{Disambiguation needed}} template is used, and, if possible, replace the link with the correct link and remove the template. When doing any disambiguation fixes, be aware of a few things. The disambiguation page ("dab page") might not have the needed entry. It is okay to add a redlinked entry to a dab page (you can refer to enwiki to get the appropriate link). We might not have the needed article. It is okay to change the link to a red link if we don't have the article. If you have other questions about disambiguation pages, let me know.
  2. There is a bot that fixes double redirects, so you don't really need to bother with them.
  3. Any article for which Wikimedia Commons has a category can have a commons cat template. If the article is linked to Commons in Wikidata, the Commons link appears in the left-hand column under "In other projects". In some cases, Commons has images but no category; for example, if there is only one image for something they might not bother creating a category. If you are considering adding a Commons link to an article, first be sure that Commons has a category; however, don't create a Commons category for just one file.
Hope that helps. By the way, it might be helpful to take a look at how I reformatted your post to make it easier to read. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:03, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6 Yes that answers my questions. And yes I noticed you used the pound sign. I had typed it out in my notes using the numbers because google translate kept popping up and would mess my posts up. Thanks! PotsdamLamb (talk) 05:08, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PotsdamLamb: You said you've started doing some category work. What kind of category work? I have a category-related project I've had on the back burner for a while that you might be able to help with if you're interested. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:11, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Any of them that show errors like the one i mentioned above but was handled automatically. Some of the ones are bad citations, missing things, if I’m patrolling a page and see red links in the category of a page I’ll look at the category and see if has more than 2 pages in it, if not, I remove the category. Those types of things. I’m sure I can help you out. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 20:19, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PotsdamLamb: OK, let me put together a description of what I have in mind so you can decide whether you want to work on it. As for removing redlinked categories that have fewer than 3 entries, please don't do that automatically. For one thing, think about whether you can find enough entries for the category to make at least three; if you can, then you might be able to create the category (assuming it's a category we'd want here). --Auntof6 (talk) 21:55, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Correct but some of these are just so far fetched it is not funny. They are the ones I typically delete as well as things I find that are "folklore" and they create a category based on the name of the character. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 21:59, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

how is the page Belle de Jour (movie) complex

Can someone tell me how the article Belle de Jour (movie) may be complex? Are there any complex words in the page? I really don't understand. Angela Kate Maureen 04:28, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela I just saw this so I can help you out some here. First off you need to go to Template:Infobox movie and copy and paste the code to the main article. Then fill that in with all the information you have in the article. I find it best to cut and paste (not copy and paste) this way it is removed from the article text and put into the box. Then you have to break the page down into sections. Start with the first introduction statement and make sure to bold and italicize the movie title. Like The Life of Auntof6 (movie) is a movie based on a Wikipedia administrators life both online and off.
Next section and so forth. Do not link to any articles off of simple to other wikis and you cannot use other wikis as references. Just go through and read and reference Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages as well as Wikipedia:Manual of Style. If you need any help, feel free to post on my talk page and I’ll assist you with this. Thanks, PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 08:51, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Do we have…..

A way that we go can through all articles ……actually I’m thinking these are going to be AWB things….

  1. I came across an article that linked to someone’s personal google drive in a link. Looking from the IT security POV that is a very high risk to the editors and readers. I was thinking of getting a way to remove all those links from articles (to be clear just links into a google drive, not about google drive)’
  2. On that same token can we set up something that will go through all articles and find links to other wikis and remove them? I see a lot that go to EN, but I have come across some pointing to other wikis like China, India, etc. Thanks, PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 08:04, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PotsdamLamb: There are probably people who can go through the database to find things like that, but I don't know how to do that. It's probably too much data to use AWB.
Which kinds of links to other wikis do you mean: interwiki language links, or inline links to articles? You might not want to simply remove them without giving some thought to what, if anything, should replace them. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:10, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question

Just wanted to confirm, if a talk page has rule-breaking content, then it must be blanked, right? As far as I now understand, talk pages aren't really deleted under any of the QD criteria. I keep forgetting this rule, so I just want to make sure. Etoza (?) 20:33, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Etoza: Before I answer, do you mean talk pages in general, or user talk pages? User talk pages are handled differently. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:39, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I mean user talk pages. Etoza (?) 07:35, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Etoza: I guess it would depend on what rule was being broken. I've seen them blanked because they contained copyrighted content, hate speech, or personal attacks. However, I don't know of any policy or guideline that says they must be blanked -- not that there isn't one, but none comes to mind. Personally, I would err on the side of not blanking if there's any doubt. Is there some other kind of rule you're thinking of? --Auntof6 (talk) 08:08, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
We cannot (or should not) allow clear libels or copyright infringements to stand. They have clear legal implications for WP. "Hate speech" is actually not a legal term in many countries. In such a case it is the U.S. legal code which decides, and the Wikimedia Foundation could give a ruling. On common-sense grounds we should edit so as to eliminate causes of dispute or unpleasantness. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:40, 11 June 2021 (UTC) (excuse the but-in...)Reply
Have to disagree on those last two. There will always be disputes, and there's no need to censor unless they become extreme. As for unpleasantness, we're not even allowed to revdel profanity. As for "hate speech," by that I mean, in part, racial slurs, which we often remove (but not by blanking an entire page, unless that's all that's on them). --Auntof6 (talk) 08:47, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I was thinking about advertisements. I saw one editor obviously advertising some service on their talk page, so I instinctively marked it for QD, which, later, got denied and I think it was blanked after that. Etoza (?) 11:44, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you are talking about User talk:BestLaptopForPhotoEditing there is no advertising on the talk page. -Djsasso (talk) 15:30, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Stub article deletions

Sorry to bother you, but you just deleted two stub articles which I had taken the speedy tags off because they were applied incompetently by a drive-by tagger. Claims of notability had been made which the tagger ignored. I don't have any connection to these pages but shouldn't they be discussed? They were Zivko Jovanović and László Levin. 129.67.118.252 (talk) 07:51, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@129.67.118.252: I don't consider being either a judge or a politician to be a claim of notability--especially a politician, because a person doesn't have to do anything to declare themself a politician. Being an office holder might be a claim, but not just being a politician. I also note that neither article had references, although references aren't necessary to claim notability.
For future reference, if you see cases like these where you disagree with a QD request, the correct process is to use the {{wait}} template on the article and discuss on the talk page. I will restore the articles to the state where they had the QD requests, so that you can use that process. Please do not remove the QD templates yourself.
Finally, I don't consider MathXplore to be either incompetent or a drive-by tagger. Please assume good faith. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:58, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

From the user's point of view, though (assuming they're going to be willing to "play nice" at all), it's better to get a gentler warning for the first one, then increase the level to let them know that we're serious and will really take action if they don't clean up their act. Think of it as giving them the benefit of the doubt, that they don't understand at first that they really have to abide by rules here. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:33, 2 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Do you think Flag of South Africa (1928–1994) should be merged to Flag of South Africa? Flag of South Africa has less content, merging the 1928 flag to that article would help expand it. ColorfulSmoke (talk) 03:06, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@ColorfulSmoke: I think it's fine to have separate articles. It would be good to cross reference them by adding a related pages section to each. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:08, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Just made some improvements, isn't Flag of South Africa (1928–1994) redundant to Flag of South Africa? I guess the old 1928 flag of South Africa is quite notable and deserve its own article, i also created flag pages of East Germany, Rhodesia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Yugoslavia, which are flags of defunct countries. @Space chinedu: I am interested in history-related topics. I usually feel I don't need to be part of a WikiProject to work on things, but I'll think about it. Do you have any particular tasks in mind for the project to work on? --Auntof6 (talk) 05:36, 18 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

As a matter of fact yes. Check WikiProject History to see the tasks I have listed and I am still expanding it. But see if you can help us out with any of the articles I listed there. Space chinedu (talk) 06:48, 18 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Space chinedu: I'll take a look. By the way, did you know there was already an old history WikiProject at User:Project~simplewiki/WikiProject History? Maybe you can get that one deleted in favor of yours. (I'd like to see the ones under the fake user "Project" eliminated anyway.)
I see that you listed the Christmas truce article as needing expansion. That's an interesting topic. Christopher Plummer opinions

Hello Auntof6! I have recently expanded and bulked up Christopher Plummer's article for a potential VGA/GA nomination. I feel like the article can be VGA material and would add more articles to the VGA list (as a good number have been demoted). However, I have a gut feeling most editors would see it as GA-material. I wouldn't want the article to be nominated for VGA only for it to be rejected and have all that time and comments wasted on a failed nomination that could've easily passed for GA status. I was wondering what are your thoughts on the article and what route would you recommend? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 00:39, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Simple<=>General

(1) Hello! Do you have any idea about writing article in general English Wikipedia from simple English Wikipedia? I mean in case of getting copied and pasted! If that's done from general to simple, a template "simplifying" is put, and simplified. Right! What about in case from simple wiki to general wiki? How is things done? Haoreima (talk) 08:48, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: That's not very common, but you could just copy the article directly there. You'd have to check the things that are different, for example categories and templates, but you don't have to make the language more complex. You'd also have to give some form of attribution, but I don't know what provision enwiki has for that. If anyone there doesn't like the simple language, they can change it. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:31, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

(2) Hi! How did you arrange all the parameters of an info box into a regular pattern like that you did in Naothingkhong? Haoreima (talk) 14:01, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: I put my cursor right before each pipe that separated parameters, then I hit enter. It would be helpful if you would format infoboxes that way because it makes them easier to read. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:31, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

wording on Single parent changed

What's the reason behind changing the wording fight with each other and replacing these words with disagree? Is disagree less wording than those words? Angela Kate Maureen 06:41, 24 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I changed it mostly because it was an inaccurate "translation" from enwiki. The original wording in the enwiki article is "There is some debate among experts." That doesn't mean that they fight. It just means they have differing ideas or opinions. In addition, "fight with each other" isn't good tone for Wikipedia, unless there was an actual physical fight that we have a reference for (none of which seems to be the case).
You need to be very careful not to change the meaning when you simplify text like that. Being accurate is as important as being simple, because it's not acceptable to have false information in the articles. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:56, 24 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
To prevent any unnecessary bad feelings, I here acknowledge that the person who said "fight with each other" was me, not @Tropical Storm Angela:. I duly note your take on this, Auntof6. Darkfrog24 (talk) 02:03, 25 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Darkfrog24: Thanks for the clarification. Writing simple English is harder than it seems like it should be. Sometimes it helps to look at the big picture, for example the whole sentence or paragraph, rather than trying to translate individual words or phrases. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:42, 25 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Here are two additional questions I should have asked you earlier. What is the reason for replacing Just over with over and adding the word each into the sentence? I'm talking the sentence "Just over 9.5 million American families are run by one woman" being changed to "Over 9.5 million American families are each run by one woman." The other question relates to the words can be being replaced with the word include. I'm talking about "The mental health problems that affect single mothers can be anxiety, depression and other problems" being changed to "the mental health problems that affect single mothers include anxiety and depression" with and other problems being removed from the sentence. Angela Kate Maureen 18:47, 25 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Tropical Storm Angela (talk page stalker) So looking at your two examples they would have different meanings. Over vs. just over where over can be anything above the number given so it could be 19.5 million where just over means it is closer to 9.5 like maybe 9.6. As to can be vs. include is can be would be the same as might include or one or two of the following conditions where include would mean all of them listed. Hope this helps! Talk pages only consisting of the talk page header template

Hello Auntof6, I don't think that talk pages only having the {{talk header}} are useful at all. Here it also clearly says, that pages shouldn't be created just to place this template. Morneo06 (talk) 11:06, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Morneo06: I agree. I just don't think we can use QD to get rid of them. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:07, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
And how can we get rid of them? Last time using qd worked perfecty. Morneo06 (talk) 11:11, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, if it was good enough for Eptalon, it's good enough for me. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:22, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Personally, I think a talk page with just the header is pointless. There's an exception though: If you know the subject is controversial, or that people will be discussing it soon enough, then you could possibly place such a header. Examples are candidates for elections, people from political parties with "extreme" views, etc. I do however think that unregistered or new editors are unlikely to do that. --Eptalon (talk) 11:32, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Eptalon: As I said above, I agree that talk pages shouldn't be created with only the header. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:39, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Couldn't we just blank the page instead of deleting it? I know I have a script that I can do it with quickly. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 16:51, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PotsdamLamb: What would be the point of that? The reason for deleting them is to remove a page that isn't serving a purpose. If you blank it, it still isn't serving a purpose. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:57, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
It would just blank it. Do not all articles and users have a talk page? Why have to wait on an administrator to do that when we could do that ourselves? If we blank it, it removes the header on them as someone placed them. I do not think they automatically generate on every page (or do they now)? PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 19:00, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PotsdamLamb: There's no need for a talk page until someone wants to talk on it, or it needs an attribution template or something like that. So, no, not all articles and users have talk pages. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:25, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok gotcha. I realized as I reading your comment above that it is there, just not created (aka soft page), so when something is added, it creates the hard page. But my question is, if someone does create the page instead of asking for a QD why can we not just blank it (yes it would still be there) but no heading will be on it. This would bring down the burden to the admins to have to do it, as we could do it, provided the heading is the only thing on the page. If there is a discussion, then we should not blank it. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 20:29, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Morneo06: Just stumbled on this discussion. This was actually subject to community discussions a long time ago. While it is strongly discouraged to create the page just to add a talk page header. Once it is there, it should be left and not deleted. The community felt the header was more helpful to the reader than a message saying the talk page was deleted and that it might actually be harmfull in that it could cause a user to be hesitant to create a the talk page when they had something to post. Deleting the talk page doesn't help the wiki in anyway. It doesn't free up space or anything like that. It is the same reason we just switch vandalized talk pages over to the talk page header instead of outright deleting them. -Djsasso (talk) 19:44, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for letting me know about it. Could you please link this discussion? Morneo06 (talk) 21:04, 14 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

questions in relation with Conservatorship page

Is there some reason for erasing the name of Britney Spears' father from the article? Also, you removed the word the from the headings in the article. Does the word the not need to even be inside the headings of articles I create? Angela Kate Maureen 12:28, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I removed the name of her father to simplify the article. Since that article is about conservatorship and not about Britney, it's not necessary to mention his name.
We don't start article titles or section names with A, An, or The unless it's actually part of the name of something, like The Beatles and The New York Times. --Auntof6 (talk) 12:38, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi

So BTW I am not ignoring you from your request to post things about CATS and such I have questions on. I have had very little time as I just worked 8 days in a row averaging 14-15 a day and one day no shower because our hot water heater blew up, one day the pilot light went out so a cold shower and the same the next day. So I was hoping to find a list of cats and their subs and the closest I could find with the help of either DJsasso or Eptalon (I forget) is Category:Container_categories. That has been a good start. I also found the stub project too so I have been slowly going through and moving the stub to the end of the article and changing it as needed based off of Wikipedia:Simple_Stub_Project. I am still going through a lot of articles on wiki project check and working on dup refs and missing ref lists. Also if the article has a lot of issues (like 10 or more) I attempt to fix it, as well as if I see any of the hidden cats are error cats and figure out how to fix them. I have noticed some of them cannot be fixed as not all templates are on here so I look to see if I can bring it over and the doc and any underlying templates that are missing for the articles. I also run into a lot of errors in infoboxes where incorrect parameters are used and if I can not find the similar one in the full template, I rem the entire line. Do you feel all of that is ok? PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 21:05, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@PotsdamLamb: I wasn't waiting for you to post anything. If you ask questions, I will try to answer them; if you don't, I don't worry about it. You don't need to give me all the reasons. My comments about the other things you said:
  • Category:Container_categories is not a good place to learn about categorization in general. There really isn't a good "list of categories" that is a good place to learn about categories.
  • Working with stubs is also not a good way to learn about the main categories. We don't have (and don't want) stub categories that correspond to all of the main categories.
  • For the other things, I'd need to see an example of what you're talking about before I could say if I think it's OK.
--Auntof6 (talk) 21:14, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
So the stubs are only based on what is in the list, I am not creating any other stubs. I am adding the correct stubs so it people want to work on say politics it will come up in that category as being a stub instead of just a general stub.
Example for stubs: [Diff]
This was one with the wrong links, wrong official site, I removed the links as I see them as advertising since they linked (at one point) to a specific series of watches, and I added a stub - [diff]
There are also others but I do not want to inundate your page with all of them. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 21:28, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
The one on the Khaksar movement looks OK. The one for Omega watches... it might not hurt to have the links because it's an article about the product, but I guess it doesn't hurt to remove them, either. I also don't think we'd tag that one as a stub. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:37, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
So I put it as a stub because of the readable prose size. After your changes, it is now 319 words; the original was only 556 readable words, so way below the threshold which I believe for us is like 1000 or 1500? I would have to look it up again unless you know you off hand. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 22:04, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

removing of terms beverage selling, very largely and creamier from recent Orange Julius page on Wikipedia

Hey Aunt: you recently removed the three terms I just mentioned from the recent article I published onto Simple English Wikipedia. Were the terms not appropriate tone for articles on this Wikipedia? Were the terms complex? What might have been wrong with using the terms? Angela Kate Maureen (talk) 03:23, 19 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela: There was nothing wrong with the tone.
  • I removed beverage selling because it made the sentence a little shorter and the words weren't necessary to understand the meaning. If you want to emphasize that those stands sold only beverages, a better phrase would be beverage stands, without the word selling.
  • I removed very largely because it's an awkward phrase and also wasn't necessary to understand the sentence (partly because the original amount and the new amount are both given, so the reader can see on their own how much the sales increased).
  • I removed creamier because that word is ambiguous and because the explanatory word in parentheses, smooth, does a good job of conveying the meaning.
Let me know if you'd like more explanation. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:17, 19 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Accounts

Hi Aunt! I want all the user accounts associated with this current User:Haoreima to be global locked so that even by mistake, I don't use those anymore as well as others might not misuse by knowing the password (if possible). Will global lock of those accounts be advantageous or disadvantageous to this current account? And will that action affect me if I request to unblock in the en wiki in future (if I wish)? Haoreima (talk) 12:23, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: I don't know if you can request global locking. You can request that an account be indefinitely blocked. Just make the request using the account you want blocked, so that we know the request is coming from the user being blocked. For example, if one of the accounts is called "Haoreima 2", then log onto that account to make the request. I can't advise you about how it would affect you on enwiki. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:34, 3 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

September 2021

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to helpfully change the encyclopedia. However, please assume good faith while talking with other editors, which you did not on WP:Simple Talk. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about changing this encyclopedia. Thank you. You stated "The correct question is not "does anyone have an issue if I create this?": that implies that you are going to create it if no one objects, and that is not how it works The correct question would be something like "is the community willing to approve this?"". That is not what I said, there is nothing in the proposal even remotely close to this. Please be cautious before you put the words you choose into other peoples mouths. Not one of these was even mentioned, you simply assumed it. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 18:02, 7 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@PotsdamLamb: You may want to think twice before accusing anyone of not assuming good faith when, in the same conversation you refer to here, you call someone a "category bitch". I was trying to alert you to how your own phraseology can be interpreted. That's why I used the term "implies", rather than stating that you said something outright. If you aren't interested in knowing how you're coming across, so be it. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:45, 7 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
I did not say “does anyone have an issue if I create this?” anywhere in my posting. That is you putting your words into my mouth. Absolutely no where, no where, does it say that so I do not know where you got it from. And I’ll admit yes I was talking about you. You feel you are the main admin when I see you posting on other admins about how to do their jobs and what not. They are also admins and can make the same judgements how they see fit as you do and you do not have the right to tell another admin how they should do it based on what you want to see. Also, I may post something to one persons talk page because they have been helping me on it but then here you come as a tps and answering me and telling me not to post there to post somewhere else. If I wanted to post somewhere else, I would have but it’s a direct question for them and I’m not looking for any immediate answer. You don’t see me posting on others to block someone or revert pages or anything as those have appropriate places to go. You should really stop to be all controlling of everything on this Wikipedia and let other admins answer questions posed to them. Might sound harsh but that has been my experience with you since day one. Very few times have you proved helpful and of those times I thank you but overall I feel you need to calm the heck down and stop telling people at the same level as you how to do their jobs. I don’t need to point them out specifically as I’m pretty sure you are already aware of everything you have done as you are a pretty smart person. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 19:07, 7 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) If you're going to make an accusation like You should really stop to be all controlling of everything on this Wikipedia towards an editor, you should really provide examples of the behaviour you mentioned. --Ferien (talk) 19:16, 7 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien It is evident in a lot of her edits and you as an admin and a previous editor not to long ago also saw these. I am not going to go through and provide thousands of diffs where this was done unless I ask for a desysop which I am not doing. She knows, as does anyone else whose been here for a while, what I am talking about. It would take me days to pull everything as she also does a lot of AWB so the logs are huge. I am off to bed now because I have to work tonight. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? (Pronouns: He, him, his) 19:22, 7 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Number of bytes/words

Hello Aunt! How can I know how many bytes or how many words are there in a particular wiki article page? (Without counting one by one :):):-)) Haoreima (talk) 15:11, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: The page information will tell you the number of bytes. However, if you want to know if an article is long enough for GA or VGA status, the page information doesn't help. That's because for GA or VGA you count only the text, not any tables, infoboxes, references, related pages, other websites, categories, images, and similar things. I usually copy the text and paste it into a word processor that gives a word count. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:55, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Thopo Hembram: I can't remove the request for deletion tag because the discussion is still going on. Also, leaving a message on someone's talk page will not help the article be kept, even here on my talk page. You need to say something on the discussion page about why you think it should be kept, but just add your own comments without deleting other comments. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:01, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Revert reasonable or not

Hello Ma'am! User:SHB2000 reverted my edit in the RFD, for changing my comment. What shall we do? Haoreima (talk) 10:55, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

It's considered inappropriate to modify your comments after someone has replied to them, and in your case, Macdonald-ross had already replied to you over there. It's a different case if no one had replied to them, but someone did here. SHB2000 (talk) 10:59, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ross' comment is independent from mine. So, it's not a response but another comment. Haoreima (talk) 11:00, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Judging by the content, that was obviously written for you. Use common sense. SHB2000 (talk) 11:10, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Judging by the presence of the template, that is judging by formatting. Regards! Haoreima (talk) 11:19, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

issues to address

In the last two weeks recently, I called just over thirty articles I posted onto the Simple English Wikipedia site between August 2010 and September 2011 into question and reviewed them. I realized then that during periods prior to August 2015 I had been young and careless and wasn't always checking the articles for potential mistakes, questionable information or possibility of having statements that might have been classified as either libelous or slander. One article posted onto Simple English Wikipedia back in spring 2011 was especially concerning: Judith Miller (journalist). I reviewed your edit summaries on that page; it said rem potentially libelous statement. I did not realize back then the last statement in that biography article might have been inappropriate for being included without citing sources. I wasn't using proper technology before early December 2012 (twenty-four days before Christmas 2012, I purchased my first Windows Seven laptop computer for making better edits and reverting vandalism, improper editing and undoing any possibly damaging editing coming from other Wikipedia users than during my first two years of editing Simple English, the regular English, French and Spanish Wikipedia sites.

I would never knowingly insert any libelous or slanderous pieces of information into Wikipedia articles or use such information or statements while answering Wikipedia administrators/other editors, because the possibility and chances of being served with indefinite blocking are too high. Since December 2012, I always use proper sources from the Internet or English Wikipedia for references before posting the page onto the several Wikipedia editing sites I just mentioned.

Just recently, during the request of administrator rights involving me, you questioned my original wording and mentioned it was written in ways non-English speakers and some native English speakers would find hard to understand. That was one of several problems due to which you were against the recent adminship request involving me. Can you please give specifics about how my original writing was written in the answers on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Tropical Storm Angela? In another three to five years beyond now, I will make another adminship request here on Simple English Wikipedia; I did not make the first request, I was surprised when the first request was made by another Wikipedia editor here. I wasn't prepared on the first request.

When the second administrator rights request is made within three to five years beyond today, I will have become much more mature and more ready for being an administrator on Simple English Wikipedia by those particular years, somewhere between August 2024 and November 2026.

I currently edit the French, Spanish, English and Simple English Wikipedia sites with a laptop computer having Windows 10 included with the device beforehand; that's so I can revert vandalism, improper edits, copyright violations or any personal attacks on other Wikipedia editors more easily. My current laptop allows me to issue warnings with better timing than previous laptops did. Angela Kate Maureen 23:22, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela: Just to let you know, I'm not ignoring your post. I'm just waiting until I have time to give you a considered response. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:03, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela: I finally had a chance to look at this. It's a little hard to pinpoint, but I came up with some examples of what I was referring to. I looked just at your RFA, but if you want I can also look in more places to see if I come up with anything else. Would you like me to a) list them here, b) post them on your talk page, or c) send them in email? It's up to you how private or public you want it to be. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:02, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey Aunt, you can post them either into email or my personal talk page area; the earlier, however, may be a better place. Angela Kate Maureen (talk) 11:19, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

How did you do it?

How did you manage to reorganize the sources in Marion Zimmer Bradley? Refill is not working for me.--NadirAli (talk) 22:32, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@NadirAli: I don't know what Refill is. I just manually typed the code needed to use named references for the three that were the same. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:47, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok now I remember or at least have a vague idea from other Wikis. After seeing the code set in automatically by refill. Good job anyways.--NadirAli (talk) 00:07, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@NadirAli: Also, just FYI, AWB automates the process of combining references that way if you want it to. I've used it to do that a few times. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:28, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okay so that's pretty much how Refill works, even though it was from the coding it produced that I learned to do it manually, even though I haven't done it in a long time that I no longer remember that detail.--NadirAli (talk) 23:13, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Temporary protection request

Hello.

User:My name is CJ who is the same IP 212.108.146.62/185.135.96.2 who was warned numerous times and temporarily blocked a few times for vandalism by the administrators, is vandalizing the same articles in the same pattern under his/her new account which he/she opened on October 1, by erasing NPOV content, also sources, and is replacing them with nationalistic POV content. This person will continue with his/her disruptive edits, despite being warned and temporarily blocked as an IP user.

Nothing will stop and deter this person, unless these articles that are vandalized are temporarily protected and he/she is temporarily blocked for a much longer period.

@Derpdart56 Being deleted at RFD doesn't mean the page can't be recreated. The rule you're thinking of applies only if the content in the new page is substantially the same as the one that was deleted. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:22, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please review. Haoreima (talk) 05:13, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: I have done some simplifying and copy editing. There is probably more I could do, but it's hard to tell what some of the text is talking about. It might help to have other people look at it as well. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:35, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Copy paste

Can I copy and paste some important sentences from this? Because it's almost more than one century old British account. I need it. Haoreima (talk) 08:44, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Here are some things to consider:
  • Is the material copyrighted? The page from Google at the beginning says that they believe it to be in the public domain, but do we take their word for it?
  • If you intend to use the copied material in an explicit quote, it should be okay, as long as you use only a small amount.
  • If you intend to use the copied material in the text of an article, I advise against that. One reason is that the text probably needs simplifying. Another is that articles should be written in our own words.
In any case, be sure to credit the source, whether you quote it directly or change it into your own words. -- Auntof6 (talk) 15:14, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) If its over 70 years after the author died in the UK, then the copyright has expired. SHB2000 (talk) 23:09, 11 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
SHB2000 Then, can we copy it freely? Haoreima (talk) 02:34, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't know when the author died though. SHB2000 (talk) 02:35, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
SHB2000 Sir James Johnstone of New Zealand died in 1908-7=1901. Haoreima (talk) 02:42, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Then yeah its in the public domain. SHB2000 (talk) 02:43, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Something invalid

@Haoreima I don't know the technology well enough to answer that. I recommend that you ask this kind of question at Simple talk where people who could answer are more likely to see it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:16, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Changerbruss: You can see your change count by clicking on "My settings" at the top of any page here. The count is labeled "Number of changes". That will be the change count for this Wikipedia.
To create a page that was deleted via RfD, you need to make sure that the new version of the page doesn't have the problem(s) that got it deleted before. As long as those problems no longer exist, and the article has everything it needs, it should be fine. If you are talking about the Dc Themmie article, that is already being discussed at WP:Deletion review. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:32, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Changerbruss If you have already tagged it, you do not need to leave any talk page messages to get it looked at. If you continue doing that, it could be seen as disruptive. This is a small Wikipedia and it sometimes takes some time for someone to look at it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:34, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rfd with no votes

In regards to Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2021/Dozy Mmobuosi Just a reminder that our Rfd acts as Prod. Rfd's with no votes automatically get deleted as there was no objection to the nomination. However they only get deleted as a soft-delete and can be restored if someone later objects. I haven't deleted it myself cause I am taking your keep as an objection (although if it was then you shouldn't have been the one to close it). Only brought it up cause someone mentioned to me that you had done it otherwise I wouldn't have noticed. -Djsasso (talk) 11:56, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Djsasso I'm not following you. I didn't comment on that one. I only closed it. I only recently saw you saying that RFDs should be treated as PRODs. -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:08, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah it was the close I was talking about. This isn't anything new, we have been doing it for atleast a decade. Pretty sure you have been in discussions about it in the past. Either way it is no big deal. Just someone pointed it out that you were not deleting articles when no one commented and so I thought I would remind you. -Djsasso (talk) 18:13, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Standard term

I am not disputing with you on the usages of standard term "other websites." My reason for using other webpages was for that reason that it is not a webpage but a website. If it were a website, I would name the section as such. Also not that we do use pages on Wiki the section known as "related pages." That's why I used otherwebpages instead. Also note that section has incorrect spelling. The S in other websites is missing.--NadirAli (talk) 21:25, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@NadirAli I see your point, but it's a pretty fine distinction. I think it's better to use our standard heading for anything like that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:31, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well I don't agree but I will leave it up to you. Also the section heading is in incorrect spelling. NadirAli (talk) 21:33, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, thanks for pointing out my typo. I have fixed it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:33, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

questions related to several recent pages

  • Question 1: In the new page Folly Beach, South Carolina, the word where people like to visit was replaced by that people like to visit. Was where a questionable term? Was it not the right word in the sentence?
  • Question 2: In the recent Carl's Jr. page, you had the word sibling changed into related. The Los Angeles listing was then switched from by Carl in Los Angeles to Los Angeles in the 1940s. Finally, the words then–company were taken out.
  • Question 4: Another Narragansett, Rhode Island note-You moved In 1888 to the start of the paragraph. Should In 1888 start at the paragraph in the first place? Also, storm may have been large in size was removed
Can you please clarify the reason for the removal, change and what was wrong with the wording? I made articles with these words because I'm cautious, careful and skeptical as to which words are better than others. I often hesitate before using any particular words. I cannot just say any words on Simple. That violates SEWP guidelines or rules. Angela Kate Maureen (talk) 21:34, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Tropical Storm Angela Replies:
  • Question 1: It's not the way that should be said. "A place that people like to visit" is better than "a place where people like to visit," and it's more standard so English learners would understand it better.
  • Question 2:
  • The word related is simpler.
  • Moving the phrase "in Los Angeles" made the sentence read better.
  • Using the prefix "then-" to indicate a person held the position at a time in the past is an advanced phrasing, so removing it made the sentence simpler. People would understand that the paragraph is talking about the people who held those positions at that time in the past.
  • Question 3:
  • When using "close to" with a number, you would then give a rounded number, not a precise one like the population number here. However, note that exact numbers are preferred for population figures.
  • "Next to" is not a qualifier you would use with numbers. In fact, in general, it's better to give exact numbers for population instead of making the sentence more vague.
  • Question 4:
  • Moving "In 1888" to the start of the sentence made it read better; for one thing, it allowed for use of only one comma instead of two.
  • Saying "The storm may have been large in size." doesn't tell the reader anything useful. The storm may have been large, but it may have been small: I don't know what this was intended to convey.
I know you are cautious with your wording, but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Encyclopedias give facts that are as precise as possible. If you know an actual number, especially if you have a source to support it (as with population numbers from the census), use the actual number without any vague language. If you have a non-numeric fact, state it outright; if you need to use vague language with it, it probably shouldn't be in the article.
Let me know if you have other questions or would like more explanation. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:07, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hyphens

Hi there... hmm, I'm not sure what I was trying to do there. I think I copied and pasted something when there was nothing which needed to be copied and pasted! I'm much more used to copying and pasting edits to names and such which sometimes need to be added onto. My own fault - I think I was trying to fix an issue which didn't exist. Bobo. 00:56, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I see the problem now

I see the problem now - when I use search on whatever browser it is I use at the time, it comes up with the same results for "en dash" and "hyphen-minus". So when I go to replace the hyphen-minus with an en dash in dates, it searches for both at the same time regardless of which I put in. Bobo. 01:10, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Strangerwikipedian It needs a reliable source -- which could be news or other documentation -- to show notability here on Wikipedia. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:40, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Okay thanks ma Am pleased you are the best Strangerwikipedian (talk) 22:46, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Okay before I create any article I will tell you the article name and search it on Google and you will tell me what I have to do ma either create or not Strangerwikipedian (talk) 22:52, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

And you will search it on Google Strangerwikipedian (talk) 22:52, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Strangerwikipedian No, I will not do that. What you can do is create the article in your userspace with the information and sources you can find, then I can see if it looks OK. I'm not going to do research for you. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:55, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Moves & Redirects

Hello Auntof6! I want to know something! How can I see the exclusive list of redirects I created? How can I see the exclusive list of pages I moved? Could you tell me how? Haoreima (talk) 13:11, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Another question, how to know the list of articles which aren't connected to Wikidata? Haoreima (talk) 13:19, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Haoreima, use XTools (link) to see the the stats about yourself/anyone. I don't think there is a tool that shows the pages that aren't linked to Wikidata. Hulged (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Hulged: Thank you so much for the information! :) Haoreima (talk) 13:55, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cities and towns categories.

I noticed you have been moving these. I think you are confusing the two levels of the category tree. The settlements categories are the equivalent of the populated places categories on en.wiki. The cities and towns categories are one level down and are the equivalent of the cities and towns categories on en.wiki. The settlements categories contain anywhere that has any population ie villages and unincorporated locations, whereas the other categories as the name suggest only include cities and towns. Its a subcategory of the settlements categories. -Djsasso (talk) 13:54, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Djsasso No, I'm not confusing them. I know that cities, towns, villages, hamlets, and possibly others go under settlements, and that our settlement categories are the equivalent of the categories for populated places elsewhere. However, "cities and towns" groups two different things, which is generally a bad idea. Also note that:
  • Some of the city-and-town categories I renamed were linked to populated place categories elsewhere, so that is the purpose they were serving.
  • Some of the subcats of Category:Settlements in Austria by state were already named "Settlements".
  • The categories I renamed were directly under the categories for their respective state. They were not under a parent settlement category, like the city-and-state categories elsewhere.
I do see that I still need to adjust some Wikidata links, so I will look at that later. -- Auntof6 (talk) 17:22, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Grouping two things, isn't actually a bad idea in many cases such as cities and towns, it is done because the names can vary for what is essentially the same thing (such as cities and towns in some countries) or they are highly related topics. As to the third point, we do this all the time if there is no need of the parent category, such as all the items are in that one category and none fall outside it. But yes the main reason I asked is because the moving broke the wikidata to the categories. -Djsasso (talk) 18:35, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Djsasso I fixed all but Category:Settlements in Mistelbach District. There isn't an equivalent higher-level category for the district. I disagree about grouping multiple things, but if you think I should rename this one back, let me know and I will. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:33, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Deletion & Reflection

If I request an admin to delete my user page in this wiki, and if it is deleted, will the reflection from "my user page in meta wiki" come here? Or, will the page be seen as deleted by an admin "XYZ-ABC", as per the request from "User:ABC-XYZ" ? Haoreima (talk) 07:38, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima You will see your meta user page. We have had quite a few users do that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:10, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Another question, I saw an Infobox deity has reflection of images from Wikidata item (if there's image in Wikidata item) and that particular Infobox deity doesn't have an image. But there's no reflection in case of Infobox folktale. Is there any reason for these mechanism? Haoreima (talk) 08:20, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima I think it depends on whether the infobox template is set up to retrieve an image from Wikidata. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:23, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Is there any list of those specialised infoboxes and non specialised infoboxes? Haoreima (talk) 08:43, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima Not that I know of. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:45, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
One last question, what is the maximum number of sandboxes a single user can create? Can I create more than 1 sandbox? And regarding naming, can I name them in any name, instead of "sandbox", but with the prefix "User:Haoreima:.... "? Haoreima (talk) 08:47, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: Nope. There's no limit on how many sandboxes one can create. I at one point had about 20 or so in my English Wikivoyage userspace, although it's now more like five. SHB2000 (talk) 08:12, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima Sorry for not replying sooner. SHB2000 is right, there is no limit to the number of sandbox pages you can have, and they don't have to have "sandbox" in the name. Just make sure you are using them for something that will help the wiki. Wikipedia:User page gives guidance on user subpages, which is what sandboxes are. -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:53, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I would like to know why my page deleted Yassineennassiri3456 (talk) 01:16, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Yassineennassiri3456 If you mean Jack Ninte Moroccan Record Producer, it was deleted because it did not show that the subject was notable. One other note, when you create a page about a person, the article title should just be the person's name; it should not include their job or other information. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:21, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please revert Chalet page

I hope this meets well, have seen your efforts in formatting the discussion page for Chalet Lizette Brannan, you are in the best interest to halt the deletion and revert by taking away the deletion tag, the nominator is notorious for acting out of regards for process, he is concern more about edits number and not due process. The page nominated for deletion was rewritten and not standing in anyway as a copyright or copy and paste as he inscribed, as you can make a diligence also as well about it. The article is encyclopedic and meets notability guidelines. I hope you can remove the tag, and the article can also be improve with time. Thanks https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion/Requests/2021/Chalet_Lizette_Brannan Mirandatalks (talk) 05:16, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Mirandatalks: I cannot remove the deletion tag, because the discussion is still in progress. The discussion is scheduled to last until December 8. The admin who closes it will remove the tag if the article is kept.
I disagree with you about Gotanda's motivation. If you accuse an editor of something like that, you should have evidence. In any case, it is a separate issue from the RFD. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:31, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Page to be deleted - Obvious advertising

Good morning,

I wanted to report the following page:

https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabio_Raffaeli

This is blatant advertising, the entry is not encyclopaedic and a user (Allensyllos) keeps removing the quick deletion request. The character on the page in question is self-promoting for his real estate business in Dubai, any source given is self-promotional. He is blatantly doing this to legitimise his position for promotional purposes.

sorry for mistake

https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%9A%E0%AE%BE%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%B0%E0%AF%8D_%E0%AE%AA%E0%AE%A9%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%A9%E0%AE%BE%E0%AE%9F%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%9F%E0%AF%81%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%8D_%E0%AE%AA%E0%AE%B3%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%B3%E0%AE%BF

Please delete the above page. That was created by mistake.

Please fix this page name

Please fix this page User:Miss Manipur name. And also please delete User:Haoreima/Miss Manipur page! Haoreima (talk) 14:29, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Another thing, whenever I create something under my userspace like "User:Haoreima/ABCXYZ", and after completing the article, when I moved it to mainspace to make it a normal article, I removed "User:Haoreima/" from "ABCXYZ" but later, "User:" is always prefixed before the article name. I could not remove it. I don't know why! Haoreima (talk) 04:33, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: You probably aren't changing the namespace. Moving pages between namespaces can be tricky. That's one reason I prefer people to create the new article fresh instead of moving it from userspace. However, if you do move a draft article from userspace to mainspace (also called article space), you need to 1) change the namespace to article and 2) remove "User:Haoreima/" as you did before. With that in mind, try moving it again to see if you can make it work. If it still doesn't work, ask for help at WP:AN instead of on an individual admin's page. Thanks.
I also see that this page needs a little work. One issue is that it doesn't have categories, although I guess those should be added after it is in mainspace. Another is that is needs some copy editing. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:43, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: For deleting userspace pages (as well as many other admin requests), I prefer people to use the established procedures. Please put a QD request on the page you want deleted, using QD option U1. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:43, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I added {{QD|G7}} to both the links I show you first time. :) Haoreima (talk) 07:41, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Many do blanking only for deletion request. Isn't that enough, despite using qd templates? Haoreima (talk) 10:01, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you explain further? -- Auntof6 (talk) 10:03, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Some people only blanked the page. Admins saw that and delete it, without any conversation between admins and that author. Isn't it applicable here too? Haoreima (talk) 10:04, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: One of the QD options is for that, yes, but the admins don't always see when a page is blanked. Therefore, it helps to put the QD request on it. In the case of the misnamed pages you were talking about, I didn't use that option when I deleted them. I used options that I thought fit better. -- Auntof6 (talk) 10:13, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Help deleting duplicate page

Good morning @Auntof6. Apparently my lack of sleep over the set-up of this project brought me more than spelling errors. IP commenting

I was really in doubt if IP accounts are given the right to comment or not like - {{comment}}, {{delete}}, {{keep}}, {{merge}}, etc. Some say yes, some say no. By the word "commenting", does it mean "just saying a few words" or "saying along with showing these templates"? Some people use terms like "vote" for these above template using, is that true to be called voting? In fact, voting isn't allowed for IP accounts, is that true? Haoreima (talk) 14:56, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: For the purposes of answering you, I will call it a suggestion when someone says what they think should be done with the page being discussed, and a comment when they say something else (such as pointing out that someone has voted more than once).
  • IP users: Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion#Discussions says "Suggestions by users using "sock puppets" (more than one account belonging to the same person) and IP addresses will not be counted." I can see different ways to interpret that. I'm not going to try to interpret it here.
  • Templates: You do not have to use one of the templates to make a suggestion; if you don't, it's helpful to put the word delete, keep, or whatever in bold text to make it easier to evaluate the RFD. When making a comment, it's helpful to put the word comment in bold or use the {{comment}} template for the same reason.
  • Suggestions (aka "voting"): First, Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion#Discussions says "The discussion is not a vote." Yes, it's common to call it voting, but that can lead to people thinking that the suggestions are counted to determine the action taken. The reasons given for keeping, deleting, or other actions are what is important.
Hope that helps. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:23, 21 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
