On this whole censorship thing
Does this Wikipedia have a user warning for censorship? If not, we should get one Purplebackpack89 (Notes Taken) (Locker) 17:21, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
- Twinkle does have "Removal of content or templates", but that has more of an implication of removing the entire page, so I would agree with you that it would be a good idea. I also think we should have a page such as WP:NOTCENSORED or whatever it is on the English Wikipedia. Kansan (talk) 17:23, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

It's in the Boom and Bust section. Thanks. Also, which history texts do you use? Purplebackpack89 15:42, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
- In the classroom, I use Holt's US History and World History Human Legacy. I never cite them on here, though; I tend to use online sources or books I just happen to have sitting around at home.
- It might be difficult to find a reliable source to say that the rich got richer as the poor got poorer during that time; however, it would probably not be hard to find one to say that the gap between the two grew by a lot. Kansan (talk) 15:51, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

- It didn't cause an edit conflict because ultimately, there were no differences between the section you were editing and the time when you hit "edit". A whole bunch of people can be editing the same article at the same time, but as long as they're editing different sections, it won't cause an edit conflict. Kansan (talk) 02:32, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

New editor
Im new to this Wiki. I have edited on the English wikipedia. i have a question about this article, Emmett Till. Is it true that the Simple English wikipedia is not censored? if so, i think this article needs to state the truth of this incident more clearly. I have tried to find policy or discussion here confirming whether this wiki EVER intentionally writes to children. Im not quite sure if it is censored or not. i think we should not censor here, but i want to be sure first. I am trying to write this question in simple english. How do you think i am doing?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:11, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
- Children are not our only target audience; a big part of our audience is also people for whom English is not a native language, and also adults with learning disabilities, among others. With that in mind, Simple is not censored, and I certainly think that the Emmitt Till article should accurately tell what happened. The article being in poor shape is a result of a lack of attention and not censorship. Kansan (talk) 04:17, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

- It really wasn't a problem. She repeatedly created an article that I assume was autobiographical, and I eventually salted the title so that it could not be recreated again. I explained why it was not notable on her IP talk page (which you can see), and why vanity pages aren't allowed, and she seemed disappointed. But it really wasn't a big deal at all, and it's not your fault at all for talking about Simple English Wikipedia. Tell her that I hope that she comes back and does some editing, er, changing. Watching pages
I don't understand why messages about watching pages are different. It gets confusing. For example, clicking the watch button on some random article will bring about a notice just above the title of the article and under the tabs (sort of like an editnotice) that tells you that the page has been added to your watchlist. Other times it would bring up a different page instead to use the message, like this here. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 06:24, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Hm...if I click your link, it's a different page, but if I go to the article (or any other page), I get an "edit notice". Griffinofwales (talk) 13:25, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- I wonder if this is either on purpose or a bug... Do you have some village pump or link to mediawiki that I could use to report this? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 19:52, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- The editnotice under the tabs comes up if you click the "watch" tab on an article. The separate page comes up if you click on a direct link to a watch page like http://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Town_crier&action=watch. This isn't a bug. This is just how it functions, 20:06, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Ummm... Well, both of them (editnotice and watch page) come up alternately between articles when I click on the watch tab (for example, Associativity directs me to a watch page, and Simple English Wikipedia has an "editnotice", but when I go back to unwatch Simple, the watch page comes up again.). Oh, and either way, it gets confusing, so I prefer if the web page simply chooses one over the other, and please sign your name next time. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 21:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- I can't get this to duplicate anywhere. Whenever I go to an article and click "watch" it does the "editnotice." I don't get the separate page like you say you're getting. Up until a few years ago, it was always a separate page, but it was sort of annoying to go to a separate page then have to come back. So, this is the way it functions, and I think it functions well. Either way (talk) 21:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Well, that's not how it functions for me, and it has been alternating between those two options for quite a while, so it gets kinda annoying. That's why I suggested providing me with some link to complain about this thing so that it can settle between one option or the other and not alternating between both (preferably staying with your option, the one about the editnotice, on all pages). TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 23:37, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'd recommend posting on WP:Simple talk. This is like a village pump and is more likely to get results from the community at large. Kansan (talk) 23:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Really? Can I simply copy and paste this discussion? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 23:45, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

DisneyVandal
Hi, I got on to this following an edit by an IP sock of en:User:BambiFan101 at Welsh Wikipedia just now, where I'm an administrator. He's just edited List of Disney movies. I suggest you revert and block. This vandal is well known across Wikipedia (see here for his latest spree: [1]) and thrives on sowing confusion (and creating work for wikipedia admins!). Regards, Anatiomaros (talk) 22:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- It seems to me that his edit is correct. En does not have the movie on their list. Griffinofwales (talk) 22:51, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- It quite possibly is in this case, but then again may not be. Believe me, this person is not to br trusted (see his history and his sock puppet categories at en). Anatiomaros (talk) 22:53, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- A google search finds nothing reliable. BF has contributed productively to this wiki, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. We often deal with BF, and this is the general policy on him. Thanks for pointing it out. Griffinofwales (talk) 22:56, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Our experience is somewhat different and I know experienced admins on en who would disagree, but it's your wiki. Take care to check and double check everything, even if it appears innocuous. Valid edits are part of his pattern too - he even reverts his own vandalism (by another sock) sometimes!. Yes, I did copied Nicol David from English Wikipedia, but I don't think it is wrong since the lede on en:Nicol David is already a summarization of the whole page. Contributions made are under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL. Plus it is not too complex and do not have templates that do not exist here as you claimed. Deleting
I just observed that you enjoy deleting pages. Polymathsj Talk 23:42, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- It has nothing to do with what you did; just a simple observation. Polymathsj Talk 23:43, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- The community elected me to be an administrator, and part of my job as an administrator is to delete pages that do not meet Wikipedia's notability requirements. Still complex
I can see that you are ahead of me by noticing the edit to Latex by User:124.179.65.20. May I have your opinion please? I made an edit to Wikipedia:Disambiguation. Would you still consider it complex? Polymathsj Talk 00:27, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- To be honest, yes, I do think that your edit made the page more complex. Here, we try to use as many words from Basic English as possible, and "making", for instance, is easier than "creating", and "very" is easier than "extremely". I'd say, overall, the first version is preferable from a simplicity standpoint. However, I do applaud you for jumping right in and working to improve the site! Kansan (talk) 00:30, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Polymathsj Talk 00:35, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Plurals
I noticed you just made a redirect for Prisons to Prison. It was my understanding that the wiki software would do that automatically by placing the letter "s" after a link. For example, sound and sounds (sound and sounds) will both link to the Sound article. Is there a preferred method?--The Three Headed Knight (talk) 22:50, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- sounds will link to Sounds, and not Sound. sounds links to Sound. That's why. Griffinofwales (talk) 22:52, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

- Try en:WP:Template messages/User talk namespace for a list of all possible uws. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 20:26, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
What is the difference between these two? It seemed like they came from the same documentation on enWiki. If the only difference is that one allows more shortcuts than the other, then I think that they can be merged. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- One is just a subpage of the Ombox template and the other is its own template. -DJSasso (talk) 21:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- So we can merge them, right? What does it being a subpage matter? It seems to still work as though it were a template. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Subpage means that its code is part of the ombox template as a whole most likely. Changing anything on it could change how the Ombox template itself works. -DJSasso (talk) 21:22, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- I couldn't find the code, or anything like in the ombox template, even when viewing the page source. They seem to be able to complement each other if they were on the same page, while at the same time exist indepedently. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- I admit I haven't looked closely at the code. Since it was probably taken from en, the best place to ask would probably be en since they too have both seperate. -DJSasso (talk) 21:46, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Actually I found the difference. One embeds information into the ombox and the other is a right aligned version for pages that don't use the ombox.
- shortcut – right-aligned box.
- shortcut-l – left aligned box.
- policy shortcut – shortcut that also says "policy".
- – shortcut that embeds into message boxes.
- -DJSasso (talk) 21:48, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Wait, you mean like this? Ombox shortcut: [X [Y]]; Template:Shortcut: [X] [Y] -- where [brackets] represent a header like Template:policy, X represents a message, and [Y] represents the shortcut box. Let me know if this is wrong. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:57, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- en:Wikipedia:Editing policy uses . If you notice the shortcut box is inside the Ombox at the top of the page. shortcut is used on en:Wikipedia:Announcements and is on the right side of the page. shortcut-l puts it on the left side of the page. ANyways I will stop spamming Kansan. If you need more message me on my talk page. -DJSasso (talk) 22:03, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Thought I might point out to you, as I know a few newer admins are unaware. But we allow automatic approval of certain types of bots. In this case interwiki. You can see our local comment about it at the top of Wikipedia talk:Bots -DJSasso (talk) 12:03, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Can categories be moved by admins, as I had said on the Simple Talk page? Or must the individual pages containing said category be changed manually? If it was the latter case, could I have the flood flag for moving the category?
Also, does the new user violate the username policy for having bot at the end of the username? I'm still relatively new to the wiki and would really appreciate you taking the time to answer all these questions. Sincerely, :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 03:04, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

As for the user, which user are you referring to?Users with names ending in "bot" generally must reflect a status as a bot, however, as Djsasso explained elsewhere on this talk page, established bots from elsewhere are treated with more leniency (which I did not know until he recently corrected me on this issue.) Kansan (talk) 05:42, 29 July 2010 (UTC)- Oh, SonofGobot? I wouldn't worry about that one. It doesn't seem to represent itself as a bot (it reminds me vaguely of Godot, as in the famous play.) Reasons
Hey Kansan, I have a quick question of the RevDelete reasons. For a RevDelete I did earlier I put "Hiding of blatant attack names" as the reason, I've since realized that that is under the "only for use by oversighters" section of the drop down box. New articles in userspace
You can create articles, then tag them with draft. This produces a bar on top of the article stating that it is unfinished. This will negate the need to move the article from userspace to mainspace. Thanks, --Chemicalinterest (talk) 18:50, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think that's more for articles being written from scratch. I don't want unsimplified articles (especially with many broken templates) in mainspace until they are really ready to go. I'd much rather wait than put an article in mainspace both with a template message and that's unprepared. Kansan (talk) 18:52, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Redirect John isner
Hi, just interested in policy (or more custom and practice actually) here... On Wikibooks we tend to delete "incorrect case" redirects like this one because the MediaWiki software handles it. That is, if you type (in this example) "john isner" or "John isner" or "John Isner" in the "Search" box you'll end up at the same article so redirects from all the different "cased" versions of a title aren't required. That's not true if the article title is "john Isner" (i.e., first word lower case, second word upper case) for some reason. Anyway, I stuck a QD on John isner after I moved it for this reason as I have a fetish for tidiness. I saw your comment that the redirect is reasonable, which is it, but it isn't really necessary. As you say, it's cheap and makes no difference if it stays there but I was just curious if leaving them behind after a page move to correct a "case" issue on the title is normal practice. If it is I won't worry about QDing them again... Thanks. QU TalkQu 21:53, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

- That's a subsection. The section heading reads 1945-2000, and should be changed to 1945-1991. The 1991-2000 content should be moved into the next section, the 21st century content should be dropped down to a subsection, and a new title should be given to the 1991-2010 section. - I do agree on 1991 being the end of the Cold War (does the 1989 date come from the Berlin Wall falling), but doesn't the header already say 1991? Kansan (talk) 18:11, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
Revision deletion
Hey Kansan. I'm not sure that this warranted Revision Delete, as it was non-identifying vandalism. We typically only hide the edits when there is a full name in this context, not just a first name. I'm not going to ask you to undo it, but I wanted to point this out for future reference. Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 22:17, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- My reading of the new policy WP:Cyberbullying indicates that this sort of thing does need to get rev del'd (and in the discussion of the policy, it was discussed that even first name sort of vandalism of that nature) probably does need to go. Because of the likelihood of it being done within a classroom, I think that does fall within that policy. Kansan (talk) 22:20, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- In particular, the definition of bullying on that page plus the phrase "Quickly hide all bullying edits" seems to indicate that rev del would have been acceptable, so I do stand by my action. Kansan (talk) 22:36, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Water-fueled car
I can explain. Water is a low-energy compound of hydrogen and oxygen. When electricity flows through it, it makes hydrogen and oxygen. The electricity is added as energy to the hydrogen and oxygen. When the hydrogen is burned in the oxygen, it releases heat energy and converts to water. So water cannot be a fuel just like the exhaust fumes of a car can't be used as fuel; the energy is already taken out from the water. Hope you understand. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 23:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Complex words subpage
Would you mind if I add some words to it? BTW, I added them already. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 23:54, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Yet again
I think that this link can be used now to move it to mainspace. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 17:03, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for finishing this! Kansan (talk) 17:18, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hope you don't mind my constant comments here! Another editor got quite annoyed about it. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 17:19, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Congratumulations! It's with great pleasure that I write to let you know that I've just closed your GA nom for Japanese American internment as successful, woop!

Murder article
When I tried to erase true vandalism with an older revision, the wiki system automatically erased the second paragraph. Wpeaceout (talk) 02:55, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
I think that page wasn't written in any language... just a few characters hehe

Dennis Brain
Thank you. I thought Dennis deserved a good article. I am too young to have heard him live, but I do remember what I was doing on 1 Sep 1957. I always loved his LP of the Mozart concertos. I have just borrowed and read Pettitt's book. It is fascinating reading. Hikitsurisan (talk) 18:06, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks Kansan for the Barnstar, it's nice to know that some one notices. --Peterdownunder (talk) 21:56, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
You have some. :) —Clementina talk 05:57, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Query about Projects on Simple
Hi, new Simple editor User:IanP asked at my talk page about how to start a WikiProject (or whatever the equivalent is) on Simple. I think he intends it to be about Warriors (book series) and related subjects. Can you offer any advice? thanks --Demiurge1000 (talk) 08:11, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
- He seems to have made a start at User:IanP/WikiProject Warriors but had previously created it in Project space and it got moved [3] --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:33, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
- My advice for him right now would probably be not to worry as much about WikiProjects, because unlike on English, on Simple, we don't really have active WikiProjects. I've seen him make some great articles so far and I'd recommend he spend his time on those. Thanks for your help! Kansan (talk) 16:24, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
