how was your Holiday Season

Hey Auntof6: How was your Christmas and New Year? Angela Maureen (talk) 12:24, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Not the best, actually. I had a real-life situation that had to take precedence over anything holiday-related, so I wasn't thinking much about the holidays. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:24, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

9/11 & Hawaii

The article on Hawaii explicitly says Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959. That’s almost a decade after Pearl Harbor. —Glendales 00:09, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

But it was part of the US before that. The US consists of more than the states. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:11, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hawaii is still a state, so i think what you meant was the US is more than the "main land" states (like Illinois). Zppix (talk) 01:24, 5 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Zppix:No, I meant two things. At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was not a state but was still part of the US because it was a US territory. Also, today the US consists of more than the 50 states, because we have 5 territories and several other possessions. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:46, 5 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Reversal of Page Edits (Religion and mythology)

Would you be so kind so as to cease your reversal or disturbance of my edits to the pages concerning mythological figures? I genuinely put in a considerable amount of time to make them appear more professional than before and I would really appreciate if I could be allowed to continue to do so within the foreseeable future. 71.31.61.85 (talk) 04:59, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, making the language in the articles "more professional" also made it more complex. Here on Simple English Wikipedia, simple language is required. You might want to read Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages to learn about the requirements here. If that doesn't fit with what you want to do, you might prefer to write for the regular English Wikipedia. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:14, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Request Undelete

Hey Auntof6, I was wondering if it was possible for you to undelete, Category:Templates tracking Wikidata due to the fact that it now has more than 3 pages in it, which will most likely grow over time as more and more of our templates pull data from Wikidata. As we move along the year I am hoping we can convert more templates to use Wikidata format as it would make it much easier to keep things up to date. --Clarkcj12 (talk) 18:46, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Clarkcj12: It looks like User:Djsasso has taken care of this. I would also like to see more of our templates use Wikidata. I have just been lazy about learning how to do that. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:10, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Could you take care of User talk:5.90.115.235 looks like they are only here to do vandalism, and I might need some revdel on my userpage. And maybe semi-protection if you can. --Clarkcj12 (talk) 19:11, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Done and done. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:17, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Dumbo (character)

Do you think that this article should be redirected to Dumbo#Dumbo the Flying Elephant? Most of the information is the same, and the article in English also redirects to the Cast section of Dumbo. 99.56.73.240 (talk) 19:15, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sro23

Do you have any clue what “FFS” means? —Glendales 00:37, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Also this editor seems slightly suspicious. They have only been editing here highly infrequently to remove certain vandalism, and apparently once had rollback rights in August 2016 based on the edit summaries, yet I can’t find any log of rollback being granted/revoked. There is the possibility that the user had a global rename, but I still find it odd that the user would know about paticular pieces of vandalism on a wiki where they rarely edit when none of the vandalism was to their user talk page. I’d keep an eye out. —Glendales 00:40, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
"FFS" means "For fuck's sake", if you'll pardon my French. I was frustrated I kept getting obnoxious template after obnoxious template after obnoxious template when it was clear I wanted to be left alone. Sorry. I have rollback rights on the English wikipedia. My guess is those pages were imported from enwiki to the Simple English wikipedia. Sro23 (talk) 00:57, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
So if you want to be left alone, why do you keep doing stuff like reverting vandalism without warning the user (not allowed), and blanking your talk page without explanation or archival (allowed but discouraged)? Also how do you know about specific pieces of vandalism on this wiki that were not on your user talk page when you hardly edit here anyway? —Glendales 01:12, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
1. The vandalism happened days ago, so it doesn't make much sense to warn the editor now. 2. It's my talk page, I'm allowed to blank it if I please. 3. I have experience on the English wikipedia. Sro23 (talk) 01:25, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Meh, whatever I guess. —Glendales 01:32, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
A couple of thoughts have come to mind reading this thread. Firstly, Instead of posting on an individual's talk page, it is best to report cases on AN as you may get a response sooner. Secondly, Sro23 is a well known and respected editor on the English Wikipedia, so I wouldn't expect anything less from them on any other Wikimedia project. Third, I don't know of any hard rule that requires editors to warn after reverting vandalism. Although warning is highly encouraged around here, you won't find yourself in much trouble if you choose not to use warnings. Lastly, a user is almost always entitled to their user space and can have it as they please. I really hate to see a witch hunt, so let's all assume good faith and stop worrying about the tiny things, rather focus on positively contributing to the encyclopedia. --Eurodyne (talk) 02:41, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Have to echo Eurodyne here, no requirement to warn. While it is helpful it doesn't have to be done, and there are times when I don't bother. Oh and yes those old edits were imported here when I imported those pages. -DJSasso (talk) 20:57, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sro23 is a well known and respected editor on the English Wikipedia: Well known and respected by whom[source?]? Have you seen the block log of sro23’s user-page? (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=User%3ASro23). Sorry User:Sro23, please don’t take this personally.
a user is almost always entitled to their user space and can have it as they please: I am glad to hear this from two simple-wiki admins, but would feel even better if it was a policy or a guideline documented on this wiki. This is certainly not the case on the en-wiki where my own edits to my user-page have been removed by a well known and respected admin, and not one of the 86 watchers of my user-page (see:https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Ottawahitech&action=info#mw-pageinfo-watchers) dared revert this admin. BTW user-page sanctity is also not enforced on several other wikis such as: Meta-wiki and wiki-news, and probably others. Also for those who want to see what my user page looked like before its content was removed See:https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User%3AOttawahitech%2Fw%3AUser%3AOttawahitech
I really hate to see a witch hunt: So do I. Ottawahitech (talk) 15:59, 5 January 2018 (UTC) Please ping meReply
My block log is clean. I'm an SPI clerk on enwiki, obviously someone there knows who I am in order for that to happen, and I very much tried to defend your good name on w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Ottawahitech. Sro23 (talk) 17:16, 5 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

certain words changed/removed

Every time I use furthermore, the word is removed; I don't understand why. Also, the words fear and motives were removed from one article page I recently created. Angela Maureen (talk) 08:46, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Furthermore is not a simple word. Neither is motives. If you want me to comment on fear, you need to tell me what article you're talking about. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:50, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The article is Gender differences in crime. That was where fear was taken out. Angela Maureen (talk) 09:05, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I took that out because I was trying to eliminate the complex phrase driven by. Instead of saying women are driven by fear (when committing crimes), I said they were more likely to commit crimes because they were afraid. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:39, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Rollback request

Hi,

Over the past few days I've noticed an increase in the amount of vandalism on Simple and as such I've requested rollback but I'm not sure how regularly the requests are reviewed so I just thought I'd ask an admin to take a look at it. (Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback)

Thanks,

two articles

Two things: first of all is User:September 1988/History of pizza ready for mainspace. Secondly, is User:September 1988/Marriage proposal finished or does it still need work? I cannot work on these articles until I get confirmation. Angela Maureen (talk) 20:22, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Some Talkpage edits removed.

Hello AuntOf6, I revision-deleted a few edits of an IP editor, who seems to have been upset about being blocked, and who started insulting you. As an admin, you can still see these edits, and undo the deletion if you want. Note also, that I have blocked the IP for three months for this incivility, seems to have been a repeat customer. Have a nice week-end. --Eptalon (talk) 12:06, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Eptalon: Thanks: I approve of those revdels. I typically leave uncivil talk page remarks for the page owner to see and deal with, but these were vile enough that I would have done the same. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:37, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

I've been on en.wikipedia for a month and a half now. But I am a newcomer at the Simple English Wikipedia, so I am still learning how to properly simplify articles for the purposes of this website, and will naturally make many mistakes on the way; but, of course, that is how one learns the best. So thank you for improving the articles I created, I am planning on making and expanding many more dinosaur-related pages here, as this topic has relatively poor coverage on this Wikipedia and I am hoping to help with that in any way I can, Cheers! ▼PσlєοGєєкƧɊƲΔƦΣƉ▼ (Contribs) 20:03, 22 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@PaleoGeekSquared: You're welcome. Two important things to know about writing in simple language are to use simple words and to use simple sentence structure. The welcome message on your talk page has links to some pages that can help with that. Feel free to ask when you have questions about it. As for the dinosaur articles, they'll be a welcome addition! --Auntof6 (talk) 23:56, 22 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Speaking of which; great news! All the articles for dinosaurs in the Spinosauridae family have now been created for this wikipedia. Of course, they're not perfect and it will take some work until they are complete. But at least there's no more red links for them. ▼PσlєοGєєкƧɊƲΔƦΣƉ▼ (Contribs) 22:43, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@PaleoGeekSquared: Sounds good. Just be sure not to remove red links just because they're red. This wiki prefers to keep most red links because they guide us to good pages to create. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:11, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm well aware of that, red links stay unless someone makes a page for them. But some people do remove them simply because they look unappealing. ▼PσlєοGєєкƧɊƲΔƦΣƉ▼ (Contribs) 23:15, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

MOS:DATEFORMAT

This redirect should be renamed to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates formatting as it is not supposed to be in the mainspace. It is not an article. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:58, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Pkbwcgs: I updated the page to point to our MOS instead of enwiki's, but I'm going to leave it as a cross-namespace redirect. The enwiki equivalent is set up the same way: it's just a convenience. You're welcome to create an additional redirect in the WP namespace. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:19, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
MOS isn't really a cross-namespace redirect anyway. MOS is one of the short forms for Wikipedia space. (as that is where the Manual of Style is) -DJSasso (talk) 23:23, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

article about company

I added four references to an article a notability tag was put on; is the article notable with the references? I created the article yesterday. Angela Maureen (talk) 17:55, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

You need to tell me what article you're talking about. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:03, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The article is about Mediacom, a U.S. cable and internet company. Angela Maureen (talk) 18:37, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
There's still nothing in the article that says why it's notable. You might check the enwiki article to find something notable to include. If you used the enwiki article as a basis for the article here, be sure to include attribution on the talk page.
One more thing: when you ask someone for help with an article, please give them a link to the article so that they don't have to ask you or hunt for it. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:04, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I added the fact Des Moines Business Record in 2012 gave Mediacom the top award for Best Local Internet Service Provider and Best Company Use of Social Media; does that make the Mediacom article notable? Angela Maureen (talk) 03:30, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's at least a claim of notability, so it's probably enough for now. We'll see if our new page patrollers accept it or challenge the notability. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:28, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wendell Anderson & Wendy Anderson

Dear Auntof6, my speedy delete was meant to delete a meaningless REDIRECT page because Wendell Anderson's page was moved to Wendy Anderson (which he was never called by nor is the appropriate name) so I blanked Wendy Anderson's page back to Wendell Anderson's page and requested Wendy Anderson to be deleted as the REDIRECT is not in use and meaningless. When you reverted my edit you caused two articles (Wendell Anderson and Wendy Anderson) to have the same content (you can compare your edit on Wendy Anderson to Wendell Anderson). --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 03:51, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

OK, then I guess that QD required a little more explanation than you gave. I've deleted the "Wendy" redirect. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:04, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sources

Hey Auntof6 quick question, why are the sources wacky? Look at Ronald Reagan, Katherine Johnson, John Glenn, Bernie Sanders and probably any article with a sources (citations) and it's all "Lua Error" (Lua error in Module:Citation/CS1 at line 3398: bad argument #1 to 'ipairs' (table expected, got nil for example). Why? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 23:25, 6 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Something must have changed. I don't "speak" Lua, so I can't help. You might ask User:Djsasso if he has any idea, because he has been updating a lot of templates and things. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:50, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @Auntof6 and TDKR Chicago 101: I fixed the issue it took some digging, but apparently an ip vandalized the Module:Citation/CS1/Utilities Module, I will admit the error was not really straight forward but there you go. --Clarkcj12 (talk) 04:43, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Cool thanks, I was busy last night so didn't see this until this morning. I should really go through protecting all the citation related modules and templates. -DJSasso (talk) 11:49, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

urgent message (articles)

I've been working on User:September 1988/History of pizza and User:September 1988/Marriage proposal for seven months; I need help on those articles. I'm starting to lose patience; if you are unable to help me with the two articles, I cannot work with efficiency. I have been editing Simple English for eight years; I have real life issues, too. But if you cannot help me with these articles, I cannot work correctly. Angela Maureen (talk) 00:45, 8 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@September 1988: I'm sorry, Angela. I've been having some severe real life difficulties for several months that limit the type of work I keep up with. If you feel I'm not getting back to you well enough, you're welcome to ask someone else for help. Help me

Hello I want your help , how to I copy an article for simple Wikipedia to other Wikipedia's please tell me sir. Internally (talk) 16:42, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the edits :)

Thank you very much for editing the United States article. I looked at the edits, and will try to write more like that. (Using people instead of sportspeople. Had to win instead of won. Last instead of Final when not talking about an event final. Removing extra phrases like "took place" when only "in" is needed. Could you look at and edit North Korea? This article is the one that is the most finished as there is not much information, and is the one most ready for the main space. --LauraHale (talk) 18:51, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome.
  • I changed "sportspeople" to "people" not only because it's shorter but because we know we're talking about sportspeople at that point. In another context, the full word might be OK, for example if you're talking about a group that includes both sportspeople and others, you could use it (for example, "sportspeople and their family members").
  • "Won" would also be OK sometimes. I changed that because it sounded like November 2017 was a deadline.
I will look at the North Korea article, but I might not have time until later today. Do you know if there will be a combined Korean team, as there is in the current Olympic Ganes? --Auntof6 (talk) 19:28, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
There is a combined team. I have articles at Korea and South Korea. That's mostly because they appear to be doing that on English Wikipedia, and I was modelling the structure after that. Russia has the same issues as their Olympic counterparts. I've tried to make that as simple as possible. And no particular hurry. (There is a hurry, but that's mostly my desire to see things on the main space because PRETTY and INFORMATIVE. I just would rather go slow at first to make sure I am writing things more simple, and using the right style. I'm hoping after a few articles are ready, it will be easier for me to go, "Ah. This one is ready too." I know there are limited administrators, and I don't want to create a huge burden because of my desire to write these articles.) --LauraHale (talk) 19:45, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@LauraHale: I did some simplifying on the North Korea article. It seems to me that there's some duplication, because the names of the two participants are mentioned several times. I'm not sure how best to resolve that, though. You might also notice that I added a category. In most cases, everything named in an article's title should be reflected in at least one category.

By the way, when you move a page from userspace to mainspace, please be sure to either blank the userspace page or ask for it to be deleted, so that there isn't a cross-namespace redirect. I deleted it, so no worries this time.

Let me know if you have any questions. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:06, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I have some issues trying to write Simple English without doing that sort of repetition. I am trying to improve on it. I'll work on doing a better job at adding categories and making sure I don't leave a redirect behind when I move things to the main space. :) Thanks again for all your help. :) --LauraHale (talk) 16:17, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I checked, and I cannot move to the mainspace without leaving a redirect behind. --LauraHale (talk) 07:32, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I know you can't. That's why I asked that you make sure it doesn't stay a redirect after the move. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:37, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Tired. Did you want me blank the page? --LauraHale (talk) 07:39, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
If it's a redirect from userspace to mainspace, then yes. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:41, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@AdmiralNelson: It would be a good article to have here. You just have to write it in simple English. There are a couple of pages that explain how to do that: Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages and Wikipedia:How to copy from another Wikipedia. If you aren't comfortable with that, you might want to spend time getting to know how things are done on this Wikipedia. There are also other things that are different here, so it might take time to get used to them. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:34, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

words changed

First, the word chapter was changed to group. Secondly, the word nearly was changed to almost. Every time I use nearly, it gets changed. It recently happened with Better Business Bureau. Angela Maureen (talk) 19:44, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Chapter is not simple and it's ambiguous: most people would think of a chapter in a book, so it's better to use a different word. Nearly isn't a simple word: it's better to use almost. The word near is a simple word, but only when it means physically close.
Many times I've recommended that you look at the lists of simple words, such as Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist, to get familiar with what words are simple. Have you ever looked at them? Just keep in mind that some of the words are simple only when used to mean certain things. For example, the word address is simple when it refers to where something is located, but not when it means to talk to someone. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:18, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

How can I do better for Simple

I see a lot of good and opportunities for the world with Simple Wikipedia. People with learning disabilities, slow processing, who don't have English as their first language, kids and people who don't have time for much details can benefit so much. How can furthermore I channel my involvement here. Danidamiobi (talk) 02:18, 18 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Danidamiobi: Hello, and thanks for your contributions here. I think the best place to start would be to learn how to write the kind of simple language that is required here. The page Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages can help with that, but it's also partly understanding what would be simple and understandable to a person who doesn't know English very well. I looked at some of the articles you created, and they are not as simple as I'd want to see. I made some changes to Lagos Lagoon: you can look at that to get some idea of what's needed.
If you're familiar with English Wikipedia, you might want to get familiar with the things that are different here (besides using simple language). I have a list of some of them, but some you learn just by working here for a while.
I hope that helps. If you have questions about any of this, feel free to ask. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:46, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

movie question

For what reason does the plot section of the Below Her Mouth article need quite a bit of clarifying and simplifying? I thought the plot section was as simple as possible. I don't understand. Angela Maureen (talk) 12:09, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@September 1988: Here are some notes about that:
  • Complex words/phrases: desire, ignites, chance meeting, struggles, fiance
  • "Connect with confidence" doesn't make sense
  • "Becomes more connected to" is vague
Another complex word not in the plot summary is "premiered". --Auntof6 (talk) 19:55, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I linked fiance with engagement. I also took out the other complex words and terms that didn't make sense. Angela Maureen (talk) 19:09, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
@September 1988: Thanks, Angela. It's good that you're working on this. Please remember that when you remove words/phrases/terms, you have to consider the effect on the text that's left. Specifically:
  • You changed "connect with confidence" to "become friends". This changes the meaning, and also eliminates the whole point of that part: that she's surprised she's attracted to a woman. When the next sentence says that she's surprised, it now sounds like she's surprised she can make friends at all, which isn't the same thing.
  • You changed "struggles with feelings" to "has feelings". Of course she has feelings, but you've lost the part about struggling with the feelings. Just saying that she has feelings isn't important enough to include.
One more note: you changed "fiance" to "man" in the last paragraph. You already used "fiance" at the beginning, so you can leave it at the end, too. It actually reads better than saying "her man". --Auntof6 (talk) 19:37, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Flood flag request

Thanks so much for your previous tips. How was your night and how is the weather. You are priceless. I want to make a large number of similar edits. How can I request a flood flag (and what is it really about so I'ld be sure it's what I need) Danidamiobi (talk) 09:28, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Oh! I already know what it is about. I want to use it to fix a large array of typos as furnitures, aircrafts, staffs (when wrongly used to describe workers). I also want to simplify a miniscule of the Simple Wikipedia by replacing approximately with about where needed. I may carefully correct overlinking too. I have a good experience at editing and policies. I promise not to abuse this. Danidamiobi (talk) 09:36, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Vermont: Deletions should actually never be done behind a flood flag, that is actually one of the big nonos. Shouldn't do admin actions while flagged because admin actions need to be scrutinized. That includes things like blocking and rollback. -DJSasso (talk) 01:42, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

55 Days at Peking. Why the film does not have notoriety? Tucker Nightingale (talk) 17:30, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

The term is notability , not notoriety . The article didn't have a claim of notability. See Wikipedia:Notability (movies) for information about how to show notability for movies. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:29, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

It had font, external link and plain text. What is wrong? Tucker Nightingale (talk) 17:39, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what font and plain text have to do with it. The external link appears to be about a comic, not the movie. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:29, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
It seems, but it wasn't. It was about the movie. Had the IMDb also. How can I request the restoration? Tucker Nightingale (talk) 19:01, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I can restore it, but I would only do that if you say how you would improve it to show notability. If it is restored but it stays the same, it will get deleted again. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:08, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

And the project still mentions:

That is all true, but there are minimum requirements for an article to be kept. One of the requirements is that the article says something that shows that the subject is notable. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:31, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello Auntof6, I want your help regarding the articles that can be marked for quick deletion. Can I mark the articles such as this which has very less or no notable information for readers? Regards-BRP ever 05:37, 11 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@BRPever: You couldn't mark that one as not claiming notability (WP:QD#A4), because it isn't about one of the types of subject whose articles can be marked that way. You could mark it as little or no meaning (WP:QD#A1), because it doesn't really say what the day is about. It just says when it is and that fireworks are used in the celebration. Compare it to the enwiki article, where the first sentence says what the reason for it is. Of course, another option is to expand the article enough to keep it. ;) --Auntof6 (talk) 05:57, 11 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

changing like to including

Almost every time I use like, it gets changed to including. For what particular reason? Angela Maureen (talk) 21:49, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

People often use the word like when giving examples of something. However, like actually means similar, similar to, or in the same way as. For example, look at this sentence:
Arnold Schwarzenegger was in movies like Alien.
Arnold wasn't in the movie Alien, but that sentence is valid because he was in movies similar to Alien (that is, science fiction movies). If I want to mention movies he was in, I could use including or for example, depending on how I want to word the sentence. Here are some possibilities:
Arnold Schwarzenegger was in The Terminator and Total Recall.
Arnold Schwarzenegger movies include The Terminator and Total Recall.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been in many movies, including The Terminator and Total Recall.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been in many movies, for example The Terminator and Total Recall.
To sum up, although people sometimes use like to give real examples of something, we don't want that use in articles. That's because it isn't clear whether the intended meaning is the literal one or the colloquial one that isn't really correct. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:10, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes. Another consideration, language instructors seldom give priority to colloquial language. We want to reach many, not only the most advanced students. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:08, 15 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

changing words on article

The article about Coventry, RI had its wording changed; it was from "western Rhode Island" to "U.S. state of Rhode Island". For what reason is that? Angela Maureen (talk) 06:25, 15 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

The article needed to say that the town is in the United States. (Remember that some of the readers here are not from the US and may not know that Rhode Island is a US state.) Adding that to the sentence while keeping the part about the west made the sentence long and a little awkward, so I left it out. Put it back if you want: I think it might fit better in the second sentence than the first. You could also add the infobox (a good idea anyway!) and people will be able to see for themselves exactly where in the state it is. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:02, 15 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Unsigned Comments

I noticed in one of your recent edits (about two minutes ago) you added a signature to an unsigned comment on your talk page. I've come across unsigned messages a lot my self, and was wondering what template or format you use to do that. Thanks, Vermont (talk) 22:49, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Vermont: I use the {{unsigned}} template. You have to substitute it. For example, if you had forgotten to sign this message, I could use the following to sign for you:
{{subst:unsigned|2=22:49, 22 March 2018‎ |1= Vermont}}
You'll notice that I have the second positional parameter (timestamp) first and the first one (user name) second. That's so that I can just copy the timestamp and user name from the page history as one string, then just add the pipe and parameter numbers. If you put the first one first, you don't have to include the 1= or 2=.
Any questions? --Auntof6 (talk) 23:01, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Article

Hi Auntof6, When you have some spare time could you take a look at Bus and User:Davey2010/sandbox6 and tell me which do you think is better?,
Currently at Bus the images don't match up to the text so it forces the reader to have to constantly switch up and down from text to image so I thought my way would be better (as the image(s) is directly next to the description(s)) and it also gives readers the opportunity to improve the descriptions of the types,
Unfortunately one draw back to my version is that the whole article seems rather big ...... but as a whole I wanted to know really what version do you think's best ?,

Patrol request

Hi I have created about 10 articles but I have not gotten a notification if they got patrolled or not. Chabota (talk) 15:56, 30 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Icem4k: I don't think you get notified when a page you created gets patrolled. Besides, when you create an article by moving a page from userspace, the software doesn't see it as a new page: it sees it as a page being moved, which doesn't appear in recent pages as needing to be patrolled. The creation would have been when the userspace page was created, and we don't normally patrol user pages.
I did spot check a couple of the pages you created, and I think they could be simpler. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:16, 30 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

AutoWikiBrowser Request

Hello Auntof6! I was thinking of using AutoWikiBrowser to generate a random list of pages, then go through them checking for spelling errors, maintenance tags (which I would work to remove), and use it to do some content editing rather than my usual primarily anti-vandalism work. I could do this using the "Show any page" button, but AWB would help in finding typos, errors in syntax, etc. Evidently, in order to use AWB, I need to be on the list at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage. I would have requested on the talk page, but I noticed a user's request has sat there unanswered since January, so I decided to contact you directly. Thanks, Vermont (talk) 01:49, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Typically we don't give it out to non-admins unless its a fixed task, not just a generic I want to do stuff with it. (ie I want to do x on these 100 pages at which point we then remove access when done). By content editing do you just mean the things you mention or something else? Using AWB for content editing is generally a nono unless you mean things like fixing categories or templates etc. If you only want it to generate some lists I would be more than happy to spit out some lists for you if you have something specific in mind (like a type of maintenance tag or topic of articles), AWB doesn't really do random well, we have to give it info to make a list from. As for the check page, I might be misremembering but I think the last request there was actually talked about elsewhere so that's why it looks unanswered there. -DJSasso (talk) 03:13, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Djsasso. Besides that, Vermont, I prefer requests to be made on the pages designated for them when there are such pages. That way, we have a central record of requests. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:34, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Perfectly reasonable! I'll work on articles manually. To answer your question, DJSasso, my plan was to make a random list of articles and see if they had maintenance tags, and if so, I would work to fix them. Small things, like no categories and copyediting which can be done with AWB. Vermont (talk) 11:28, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Another way to get a list of articles is to pick a maintenance category from Category:Wikipedia cleanup categories and work on the pages in that category. By the way, thanks for doing this work! --Auntof6 (talk) 18:47, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that 3 reports on WP:VIP had been dealt with, and had remained there for more than 24 hours. In a case like that, am I permitted to clear them from the page? Thanks, Vermont (talk) 19:23, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

You can. You could even clear them sooner than that. The only reason they aren't cleared immediately is to give the people who made the reports time to see the resolution without having to go into the page history. I think a few hours is time enough for that, maybe even less if we're getting a lot of activity. Just be sure that whatever action was taken is really the final resolution. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:51, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I'll look into it. BTW...Fulani is an ethnic group in Nigeria. Please, note that I have recreated Abolore Akande an article you speedy deleted. I am struggling to understand why you will speedy deleted an article that contains reliable sources without even informing the page creator. I'm not sure this is a good practice. I should have been informed of the deletion at least as a courtesy. Wikicology (talk) 09:32, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Wikicology: That article was deleted because it didn't claim notability. It had references, but references alone don't show notability: they can only support or verify things in the text that claim notability. The new version of the article claims notability.
As for your not being notified that the article was being deleted, I know that can be frustrating, but it was done in accordance with our quick deletion process. If you think that process should be changed, feel free to start a discussion about it. You aren't the first person to mention it, so the idea might get some support. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:57, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello Auntof6,

I know I ask too many questions and sorry about that, but here is another one. I don't think I have seen such cases before but do we allow users to create userpages in names which are not their usernames like "User:Prasad Jivane"? I found this page in the New pages list, It was new to me so brought up here. The policy says none existing user, but the user is here, he has just used another name for himself. Thanks-BRP ever 05:10, 5 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

You can ask all the questions you want! To answer your question, there shouldn't be a user page for a user who isn't registered. Normally we would delete it, but in this case I think I'll move it to the user name of the user who created it. If you see other cases like this, you can QD them if you want, or ask an admin like you did here. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:22, 5 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

You state that the purpose of this Wikipedia is to "have articles in language that is simple so that people who don't know English well can understand", not reading at the level of a second grader. You can see that the changes I make are not unnecessarily complex or formulaic; anyone familiar with the English language would not have a problem understanding it. Look at the pages on Apollo or Zeus; they're practically full of "complex" text (Apollo's page is essentially a copy and paste of the original one from Wikipedia), yet you leave them be. In all honesty, I find the pages as they currently appear to be demeaning to the reader's intellect (why would one need to know that Kronos and Rhea are Hephaestus' grandparents, for example); that is why I am so adamant in my changes. I simply ask that you just look and compare my changes to these pages to the way they thy appear now and you'll see which one is more fitting.

It !ooks like a duplicate of Template:QD-notice. I don't see why we'd need it. I think I'd RFD it so the creator would have a chance to say why it might be needed. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:31, 13 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Comment re my message to Chrisangelo23

Hi Auntof6. I'm sorry about my words on Chrisangelo23's talk page. I assumed (wrongly) that you were going to tear a strip off me for that, which is why I said I wouldn't retract my comment; I was actually a little surprised you sort of agreed with me! Thanks anyway. All I hope now is he reads the messages and reads the documents intended - hopefully he won't leave, but if he does, he does. DaneGeld (talk) 21:30, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@DaneGeld: In the times I had a problem with something someone has said (and I honestly don't remember if it was you), it was more how it was said than what was said. In this case you were very upfront, but didn't say anything offensive or say it in an offensive way. We can be civil even when we're addressing problems, no matter how severe the problem. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:55, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Auntof6, checking in on upcoming school project

Thank you so much for always giving us wonderful feedback and assistance on our annual school projects. This year, on May 3 and May 8, we will be working on this project: Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable Female Activists

As you are always active and helpful, I primarily wanted to let you know that we are getting underway.

Additionally, I have asked Peterdownunder (talk) if he would, once again, be our Ambassador (as I do not think you do that work, correct?), but I worry about the difficulty this places on him due to time zones. Our dates/times (May 3, 8-10pm GMT and May 8, 3-5pm GMT) are the middle of the night for him, I believe. I am not sure where you are located, but it seems you might be in time zones that are closer to working well with ours. If that is the case, I wonder if you might be able to help us (or suggest someone who we can ask to help) remain unblocked during the duration of our student work time? Our biggest roadblock is when someone blocks our IP address in the middle of class.

In gratitude for assistance or suggestions, Castilibrary2 (talk) 20:29, 22 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Castilibrary2: Welcome back! I am in the San Francisco, California area. I haven't been an official project ambassador before, but that doesn't mean I couldn't be. However, if you'd need me to be available during the specific hours you mention, I'd have to decline because I have other commitments at those dates and times. I should be available afterward each day, though. Just let me know how I can help.
In case it's of interest, I have a personal subpage where I've listed things that are good to include in biographical articles. It's at User:Auntof6/What to put in a biographical article. Feel free to use any part of it that you think helpful. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:14, 22 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Makes sense, as we are in the same time zone. I'll be in touch if I cannot find another ambassador, as there are always issues that come up over the course of a project, outside those two-hour slots. I am thinking about how we can incorporate more of what you cover in your subpage on biographical articles (thanks!). We ask students not to include images, as we do not have the time in this project to teach to usage rights. Otherwise, we'll do our best to take your suggestions on. Thank you, as always! Castilibrary2 (talk) 03:49, 25 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Castilibrary2: Usage rights? Simple English Wikipedia allows images only from Wikimedia Commons, and everything there can be assumed to be OK to use. I certainly wouldn't expect your students to upload their own images. I can understand not wanting to take on that aspect, though. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:02, 25 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: WRT usage rights -- we have found it challenging in the time offered to effectively stay on top of student image use, in any event. I am trying to find bit of assistance: I have managed to get my own account (this one) unblocked when writing in our school's IP range, but my student accounts are all still blocked. I am curious if you can please help me exempt the students' accounts as well? They are listed on our project page: Current project page: Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable Female Activists. I am also trying to get a bead on what kind of behaviors are causing the block to be in place -- I was told there is widespread vandalism, but would like to get more information on that so I can track down and deal with whatever is taking place. Thanks! Castilibrary2 (talk) 15:30, 30 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

One notification is enough, unless you want people to get annoyed with you. It's fairly standard these days to ping someone if you want to get their attention. It's rarely necessary to leave a talkback message, especially if you already pinged. --Auntof6 (talk) 13:07, 27 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

RfD nomination of Category:Wikipedians by adoption status

An editor has requested deletion of Category:Wikipedians by adoption status, an article you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2018/Category:Wikipedians by adoption status and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Auntof6 (talk) 03:40, 28 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

AWB rights

Hi, can you tell me where I can apply to use AWB here? I'd like to use it to do some stub-sorting like I do in ar wiki, thanks MohamedTalk 05:49, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@محمد عصام: Yes, at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage. That page is mentioned in my edit notice. I will tell you, though, that other people have asked for AWB access to do that task, and they were turned down because stub sorting isn't a priority here. But go ahead and ask.
Since you're interested in stubs, be aware that stubs are managed differently here than on other Wikipedias. We keep the number of stub templates and categories to a minimum. Any new ones have to be approved, and they rarely get approved. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:57, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I did notice that about the number of stub templates, I guess the community prefers not to sort stubs not to have too many categories with too few articles in each? MohamedTalk 06:06, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes: having more stub types makes managing them more complex, and this site is all about simplicity. We usually consider new stub types only when there are more than 1000 existing stubs that would fit it and someone is planning to actively work on expanding those stubs. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:20, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've undone one of your changes @ Stephen Hawking

Hi Auntof6. I just wanted to let you know I've reversed a change you made at Stephen Hawking, where you changed the spelling of Motor Neurone Disease to Motor Neuron Disease. Motor Neuron Disease is a redirect to Motor Neurone Disease, so I have directed the link straight to the article. If you have any questions or problems, please leave a note here and I'll drop by to talk :) Thanks! DaneGeld (talk) 18:53, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@DaneGeld: Thanks for your note here. I think the correct spelling is "neuron". When I did that change, I didn't have time to rename the article and make other related changes. I'll just redo my change when I have time. Besides that, I think we need to clarify that Hawking's disease, ALS, is just one type of motor neuron disease. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:09, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@DaneGeld: Never mind: I've just learned that "neurone" is the British spelling. :) --Auntof6 (talk) 23:16, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
The en article on Stephen Hawking spells it "Motor Neurone Disease", although the article on en is spelled en:Motor neuron disease. If you see the top of the article, it states "The term "motor neurone disease" is also used to refer to the specific motor neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)." Talk:Miami Sound Machine from 2014 is the page. Angela Maureen (talk) 10:00, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I said that Allmusic "isn't necessarily a very reliable reference" (italics added). I said it that way because I don't know if that one's reliable. It's possible that it's a reliable source, but not necessarily one that can be used to show notability. By that I mean that if it's a site that has entries for every recording, the information might be accurate but just having an entry there wouldn't mean that a recording was notable. Do you want me to explain that further? --Auntof6 (talk) 11:24, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@SAMOSHIZ: I guess that's arguable. The main thing I saw a problem with is identifying him as an LGBT icon the way you did: not only did you not give any sources to support that, but it was mentioned almost as an afterthought and didn't give any detail about why he is an LGBT icon. You can't mention something like that without backing it up somehow. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:35, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

QD

"Created by a sock" is a valid reason for speedy deletion especially when it's a userpage. –Davey2010Talk 02:04, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

To avoid edit warring over it I've now changed it to G3 however I would like to know how "created by a sock" is not in any way, shape or form a valid reason for speedy deletion ?, I genuinely am lost on that, Forgot to add but it would've been more helpful if you speedy deleted it under the "correct" criterion instead of declining it altogether thus allowing the vandalism to still stay, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 02:11, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
"Created by a sock" is not one of the QD criteria defined at Wikipedia:Deletion policy. For QDs, we are required to stick strictly to those options. I don't see the vandalism, either, especially since it's a user page. That's why I didn't pick another option. However, I will leave it for another admin to evaluate. By the way, please watch your language, even in edit summaries. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:22, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi, You don't need to follow QD by the word - Common sense is all that's needed and it doesn't hurt to be lenient with how you QD things, Not going to lie I am perplexed with how you don't see "[Editor] LOVES THE FUERDAI VANDAL ON WHEELS." as vandalism but we all see things differently :)...., Yep sorry for that immediately regretted that soon after, Thanks for replying, –Davey2010Talk 02:41, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we actually do need to follow QD by the word. If a situation doesn't exactly fit one of the options, we don't use QD. That's not to say you can't leave a note at WP:AN to ask for a non-QD, non-RfD delete. But I really don't see the vandalism there. Maybe it's a cultural reference I'm not familiar with, or a slang term I don't know. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:47, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
And by the way, we don't automatically delete things just because they were created by a sock. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:49, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry but you don't, If someone QDs something under a custom rationale than you should honour that not IMHO be awkward over it - We're not the Army and no one's going to be kicked off the project over QDs. But I shouldn't have to go to AN for something that is obvious vandalism, The sock is known as the "Furdai sock" because he apparently loves the word so much, He's repeatedly been blocked on EN hence how I knew he was a sock, Just touching on the custom rationale for a second - If you or QD don't honour custom rationales then that option should be removed from Twinkle (if possible) but I guess that's another discussion for another day really, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 02:55, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Rfd is for those things that don't meet QD. QD is a very strict list of quick delete options that are essentially guaranteed to pass an Rfd basically. If it is a reason other than those it needs to go to Rfd. The custom option in twinkle is just to have a custom wording, not a custom reason if that makes sense. -DJSasso (talk) 18:09, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Maybe I'm not getting it but I just don't see why it needs to be so strict but then again in all fairness - Different project = Different rules, That does make sense but I've never known that hence why I was confused and frustrated above - Anyone would take "custom rationale" to be "a different reason" not "different wording" if that makes sense, Sorry I'm not arguing :),
Auntof6 - Apologies if I came off harsh or angry with you, You're a volunteer just like the rest of us so I shouldn't of been so angry, I wasn't so much angry with you I was more angry with the policy and policies we have but yeah I'm sorry for the bashing, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:21, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Not really sure you will find it any less strict on other projects. En.wiki is even more strict. They just have had reason to create more options than we have here since our Rfd doesn't get as overburdened as theirs does. -DJSasso (talk) 18:32, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

deleted Category pages

You have deleted some Category pages as having "with too few entries" but did this in a way that is not done elsewhere. For example... you did not warn me, nor give me time to add more. Tahc (talk) 03:38, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

In general, a new category should be populated with at least three entries right away. I believe the categories had existed for a few hours when I deleted them. I don't usually delete them if they were just created. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:49, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

adding notices to movie articles

Plot notices were recently added to Fifty Shades Freed and Lovelace saying the plot was overly detailed or too long. What's up with that? Angela Maureen (talk) 17:52, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

The plot description shouldn't be the bulk of the article. On both those pages, the plot description is very long compared to the total size of the article. The enwiki articles have more other information to balance that out. It might help to consider that the encyclopedic value of an article about a movie is in things other than the plot. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:03, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Infobox:stadium

Hi, Just to let you know you broke the syntax at Template:Infobox stadium (The tenants said "<nowki>{{{Acreage}}}</nowiki> instead of the correct stuff), Just wanted to let you know incase your edits were meant to fix something else entirely, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:05, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Davey2010: It was meant to fix the fact that the data29 parameter was specified twice. Your change put back the duplicate, so that needs to be fixed some other way. Maybe the second data29 item (the one for tenants) should be data27 instead? In any case, the two items for acreage should have the same number, which they don't now. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:19, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ah sorry, I hadn't spotted the duplicates, I've changed it to 27 and the error's returned, If it helps you can view the problem at City of Manchester Stadium to see what I mean, Realistically do we need the acreage option I mean is that simple anyway ?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:24, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I don't see an error there now: can you be more specific as to what I'm looking for? --Auntof6 (talk) 21:30, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sorry try now, –Davey2010Talk 21:33, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
(change conflict)  The template appears to have been created with this duplicate and I've reinstated the duplicate assuming it was a different code - Do we know if the duplicate thing has actually caused issues ?, If it does/has then would it be a better idea to move "Infobox Stadium" to "Infobox Venue", Copy all from EN and then essentially use one infobox for stadiums and venues like they do with EN ? .... –Davey2010Talk 21:33, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I imagine the duplicate would cause problems only if the involved parameters were used. I doubt I checked all uses of the template to see if they were: I was probably just trying to clear the duplicate parameter maintenance category (but that was three years ago, so I might be wrong).
As far as switching to the venue template, I'd get at least a little consensus on that, if only to give people a heads-up. It looks like the parameters aren't the same, so articles that use the stadium template would probably need to be changed one way or another. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:57, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh right, Well I'll take a look over the next week and see if it is causing issues - It has to be a small minor fix surely?, Ofcourse if push comes to shove then I'll get consensus beforehand but I'll try fixing first ... Where there's a will there's a way :),
Many thanks for your help with this and sorry for the big red number you probably recieved :(, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:08, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi again, The acreage infobox parameter here is also a parameter on the EN venue template however this option doesn't seem to be used at all - I've checked 15 random articles spanning across 3 pages and ranging from stadiums, fields, centers etc - None have this parameter at all .... so it would be a good idea to simply ignore the issue ?, The duplicate issue doesn't appear to affect the tenants section or any other part of the infobox, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 00:34, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Forgot to say even tho "acreage" is the coding here it's not actually in the template document itself (IE it doesn't say "| acreage = ") .... So as it's not being offered as a parameter there shouldn't be any problems - Problems could only occur if someone adds that above parameter to an infobox but judging by the lack of use on EN and the fact it's not in the doc here I'd say chances of that happening would be very slim, Sorry to bother you I'll leave you in peace now lol, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 00:40, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Davey2010: I think I've got it working, although it seems to require the acreage parameter to be specified, even if you just leave it blank. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:51, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Auntof6, Ah brilliant but there's only one problem - It's now broken on all article infoboxes that don't have this parameter, I don't want to revert or remove that parameter (and it's coding) so I'll leave that up to you, At present 200 articles are using the template if that helps :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 13:15, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

The chances of someone actually searching "JESC 2012" is very very slim especially when they've not existed for a good 10 years, Anyway many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:40, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Davey2010: I'd be glad to restore them after the articles are created. There's no need for a redirect whose target doesn't exist. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:05, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I do agree on that but as I said the chances of someone searching would be slim but okie dokie, In all fairness now I've created them there obviously watchlisted so even if I do forget they'll still pop up, ANyway okay thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:16, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!

I'm new here on simple and would like to thank you for following up on the articles I made last night. Content creation on en was not a strong suit of mine, but I'm trying to learn the ropes here. I welcome any and all critiques and criticisms you may have on any of the work I do. I have thick skin so I ask you not be concerned about telling me if I've really messed something up. Again, thank you for the time you put in here and let me know if there's anything I can do to help! Operator873CONNECT 22:56, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

the words is and are

When I see the words is and are within certain articles, particularly book, music and movie titles, the letter "I" in is and the letter "A" for are are usually capitalized; the "re" in are and the s for is are usually lower case. Examples include When Night Is Falling and Blue Is the Warmest Colour. For what particular reason are is and are not completely lower case, similar to of, and, the and with? Can someone tell me? Angela Maureen (talk) 20:33, 12 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

If you mean on Wikipedia specifically, it's part of Wikipedia's manual of style: see en:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles#Capital letters for the complete guideline. Note that the rules are different for titles of Wikipedia articles. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:54, 12 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America section marked complex

How is the plot section to Beavis and Butt-Head Do America complex? What is complex about the section? What are the complex words? Angela Maureen (talk) 20:54, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Complex words/phrases: menacing, mishaps, hitmen, euphemism, catch an airplane, security (because it means people here, not just the concept), trespassers, burst in, duo, hitting on, cavity search, open fire --Auntof6 (talk) 21:51, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I took out cavity search, open fire and changed menacing to terrorizing, mishaps to accidents, burst in to come in, hitting on to flirting. I also linked euphemism, flirting and security. Angela Maureen (talk) 22:44, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Asian Month 2018

Hey Auntof6,

My name is Yu Lun, and I’m from the Wikipedia Asian Month International Team. It’s a great pleasure to meet you and see the effort you have put into the previous edition of WAM. Thank you! Thanks for dropping a message on my talk page. With regards to your postcard, I will check our records for you. To the best of my knowledge, mailing service may have a different quality from different countries and postcards are thus easily lost.

We are currently preparing the 2018 edition of the Wikipedia Asian Month and would like to check with you if you are still willing to organize the WAM on the Simple English Wikipedia? On behalf of the WAM team, I will be the liaison to Simple English Wikipedia this year. So if you have any questions, requests or ideas, feel free to contact me directly.

Meanwhile, as a WAM organizer, we will put you on this mailing list (https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wam-announce) that is exclusively for organizers only. We will keep emails from that list to a minimal. But feel free to let us know if you wish to not be subscribed. Here is a survey we would like you to fill in (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfxUiT2RILnuOr3eacXzYwCgda6s2IcgRqSQZdYPy_GadWHxg/viewform?usp=sf_link). This survey will ensure that we will be able to better help you in WAM 2018. I’m looking forward to seeing you at this year’s event!

@Auntof6,

You have not filled in the address portion when you submitted the postcard form previously. We can send one with this year's event but we can't deliver it now. On a different note, will you be still willing to organize WAM 2018 on the Simple English Wikipedia? Thank you!

--Yulun5566 (talk) 00:22, 4 July 2018 (UTC) on behalf of WAM International TeamReply

@Yulun5566: Thank you for checking. It's strange that my address didn't get entered, because I remember entering it on the form. In any case, yes, I am willing to organize WAM again. When will it be this year? --Auntof6 (talk) 00:32, 4 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Auntof6,

WAM will tentatively be held in the month of November! Once there are further updates we will directly contact you:)

Hello Auntof6, this page is in the mainspace and it is being identified as an article/page by the software. And the earlier edit summary said that the project is completed so I thought it could be deleted. QD reasons

Hello Auntof6, I have a question, generally user who created the page is not allowed to remove the QD tag if someone places it over the page but are they allowed to remove a reason from Qd-multiple? Like if a page is tagged for g12 and g11 and if creator fixed the g12 issue then can he remove that reason? Thanks and I hope you have a good day.-BRP ever 18:03, 8 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@BRPever: I just realized I hadn't gotten back to you on this. It's a good question. I think I would say not, but you can still use the {{wait}} template on the talk page and comment on the talk page that you think you've addressed one of the reasons. If the admin who looks at it thinks the remaining reason isn't valid, the article would be kept. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:19, 16 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Request to review Articles

Hi

I can over to your talk to request assistance on the article's I created. I have recently created Julius Malema but I would want you to view it and have it approved on this Wiki. I would want to ask if you could review Joseph Kalimbwe which was recently removed. The character has had a significant amount of coverage and published books, with the most recent being this here https://www.amazon.com/Persecuted-search-change-Joseph-Kalimbwe-ebook/dp/B07F6QD764. Could the deletion be reviewed and perhaps be restored.

I also would like to know if you could help me Godrich Gardee from French Wikipedia to English, that's if that's possible. I choose to come here because it feels some sense of shame and sadness to have to write and edit an article and have it deleted.

Looking forward to your response.

VIP Report

I got your message on this VIP report on User:99.248.169.6 that I made. I'm curious what further explanation you would want after the user was warned 12 times by other editors. When I made my first and only revert for this editor, I even used Twinkle's AGF instead of the Vandalism rollback so I could explain exactly why I was reverting the edit (My revert description was: "Please do not copy/paste enwiki articles here.") I'm definitley not attempting to argue your point; however, I am very curious what you'd have liked to seen. Thank you very much in advance. Operator873CONNECT 04:55, 11 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Operator873: I was looking at messages on the user's talk page: those only mentioned vandalism and adding wrong information, not copying/pasting. Edit summaries aren't considered messages or warnings to the user, because they might not see them. Does that answer your question? --Auntof6 (talk) 05:04, 11 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
It does. I did not add a warning with an explanation to the editor's talk page because there were already four warnings in the last couple of days. category removal on Transit bus

The category Category:Public transport was removed from the page transit bus recently. For what reason? Angela Maureen (talk) 04:56, 13 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

It's because the remaining category there, Category:Buses, is already under Category:Public transport. Here is what that part of the category tree looks like:
   Category:Public transport
     Category:Bus transport
       Category:Buses
An article shouldn't be in two different categories in the same branch of the category tree, so this article didn't need to have Category:Public transport on it.
By the way, when you link to a category because you're talking about it, you need to put a colon between the opening brackets and the word "Category". If you don't, then the software assigns that category to the page. See the change I made to your post to see what I mean. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:27, 13 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

IPs & users

How exactly do admins recognize who is using what IP address? Most IP addresses change over time. Angela Maureen (talk) 16:27, 16 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm not an expert in this, but here's my understanding: An individual user's IP address may change over time (even if it's static, but especially if it's dynamic), but the block of addresses assigned to an ISP is much less likely to change. We can't tell exactly what individual person is using an IP address, just what ISP or other company it's assigned to. When you look at the changes made under an IP address, at the bottom of the page are links that can help you identify information about the ISP.
Does that answer your question? --Auntof6 (talk) 17:31, 16 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

deprecated word

What does the word deprecated mean? Angela Maureen (talk) 07:57, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

It means something that used to be used but isn't used any more. There are quite a few parameters that used to be used by the template {{Infobox person}} and its redirects and wrapper templates, but which have been removed from the template(s): those parameters are deprecated. There are also entire templates that used to be used but aren't any more (except where we haven't gotten around to deleting them), and those are called deprecated.
Not all deprecated parameters or templates have to be removed right away. I'm only removing some to clear some maintenance categories. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:12, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Indigenous marriage in South Africa

Why did you delete Indigenous marriage in South Africa? The comment is "QD G12: Copyright violation: https://kids.kiddle.co/Indigenous_South_African_marriage". That target page copied the content from Wikipedia. kiddle.co is a Wikipedia clone. It also says that the content is CC-BY-SA.

Can you please undelete it?

Thank you! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:17, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Error in Template:Reply to: Input contains forbidden characters. I will undelete it, but you will need to give attribution. Using content that is freely available like this is still a copyright violation if there's no attribution, because the terms of the license require it. This is explained at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ . I also note that the text in that article wasn't simplified enough for this wiki. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:36, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh, but the attribution is given in the edit summary of the first version: It was translated from the Xhosa Wikipedia. It was copied from the Simple English Wikipedia to kids.kiddle.co, not the other way around. kids.kiddle.co is clearly a clone of Wikipedia, and it says so explicitly at the bottom of the page. You need to ignore this site when you check for copyright violations. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:15, 19 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Question

If I do something like this again, am I able to fully close it out myself? If so, are the templates to be used just the {{subst:archive top}} and {{subst:archive bottom}}, then move it to the recently closed area? I don't want to cost you more time if it happens again. Operator873talkconnect 05:28, 24 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

You can do it yourself. Here is what you need to do to close a request as kept:
  • Remove the noinclude tags around the {{in progress}} template.
  • Change the {{in progress}} template to something like {{kept|reason}}. The reason can be "withdrawn by nominator", "request created in error", or whatever.
  • Put your signature right after that template.
  • Put the substituted archive top and archive bottom templates at the top and bottom, respectively.
  • Move the request to the recently closed section.
  • Take the rfd template off of the page that was nominated.
  • If you ever do a close of one that wasn't in error, where the discussion was complete and the consensus was to keep, add the {{oldrfdfull}} template to the talk page of the nominated page.
  • If the page creator was notified about the request, either leave a note that it was done in error or remove the notification.
I think that's it. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:49, 24 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
And it didn't take me that much time -- closing a request is kind of second nature at this point. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:51, 24 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

notability tag on Catherine Breillat

The enwiki article for Catherine Breillat doesn't have any awards listed for her. How else can I make a notability for this particular person? --Angela Maureen (talk) 23:46, 31 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@September 1988: Well, you based the article on the enwiki article, right? Go back to the enwiki article, find what makes her notable, and include that (with references) in the article here. You may have shortened the article too much: articles here do not have to be short.
Also, when you base an article here on an enwiki article, you must include attribution. If you don't, it's a copyright violation and the article here can be deleted. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:23, 1 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello. One article is missing from Category:Basshunter albums because one of the administrators deleted it irresponsibly. Back to Category:Basshunter, is it enough to add template right now? I can write articles about singles probably in longer perspective. Eurohunter (talk) 08:32, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Eurohunter: Please don't use my talk page to accuse other admins of being irresponsible. If an article was deleted that you think should have been kept, you can use WP:Deletion review to ask for the decision to be revisited. I'd advise you not to make accusations there, either, just to make a straightforward case for restoring without attacking anyone.
As for your question, I don't understand what you're asking. What template are you talking about, and what kind of add are you talking about? --Auntof6 (talk) 12:07, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
No I don't. I'm waiting for article restoration and just I told how it is. Administrator can't abuse his rights deleteding any page at any time saying page not meets the notablity criteria if article meets them very well what took place. Here is example of template contained in the category. Eurohunter (talk) 12:30, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Eurohunter: You mean categorizing a template into the category? Yes, that would be OK and would make the required three entries. If you're copying the template from English Wikipedia, just be sure it's adjusted for here if necessary.
As for your comments about the deleted article, please remember to assume good faith. Have you asked for the article to be restored? It's possible that you and the admin have different views on what constitutes notability. Try using the deletion review process so that a different admin looks at it. --Auntof6 (talk) 13:25, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
I already explained him the situation and waiting for his answer. Thanks. Eurohunter (talk) 13:29, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

references on articles (other than person-related)

Why do most articles need references? (I already know why people-related articles need references, so I'm leaving that out.) I'm talking car-related, hurricane-related, movie-related or song-related. Is it for notability reasons?

Angela Maureen (talk) 15:30, 6 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Have you ever read the magazine Reader's Digest? Most of what's in it is articles taken from other sources -- that's why it's called "digest". With each article is a statement of where the original article was published, which shows that Reader's Digest isn't plagiarizing the information or trying to make it look like they created the article.
Wikipedia is like that. Information in Wikipedia articles is supposed to come from reliable sources, not from what people personally know. The main reason for references is to show where information in an article comes from. That lets people evaluate the source of the information for themselves, go to the source if they want more information, and know that an article isn't original research. (Original research isn't allowed in Wikipedia.)
There are some things that are considered inherently notable. Just the fact that they exist makes them notable. These include settlements. Even though they are automatically notable, the articles about them should still have references to show that they really exist(ed) and to support specific facts in them (such as population figures). There has been at least one case where someone created an article about a settlement that never existed, and the fake article wasn't caught right away. People bring that up a lot when they're criticizing Wikipedia.
The main difference with articles about people is that the subject of the article (or their estate, if they are dead) can sue Wikipedia if an article says anything negative or controversial about them. Any such statements should be referenced appropriately. That is why there are even special guidelines for categorizing people by ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, and disability.
en:WP:WHYCITE has more good information on this. I hope this has answered your question. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:04, 6 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
I can only show how other encycopedias do it; for example the "Stanford Encyclopedia of Philiosophy" - Yes, it is online, freely available, and only for philosophy-related topics. Mosat of the things we know about Zeno of Elea are about his three paradoxes. Look at The page at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philiosophy, and click on "Bibliography". YOu'll see there are many texts/articles/publications that are the base of the aricle. Another entry: Sorites Paradox (One grain of Wheat does not make a heap, so 2 don't, so 1 million don't either... -> there is no heap.. :) )- Just illustration, and perhaps not the right branch for your liking..--Eptalon (talk) 19:27, 6 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Notice

Hello I just noticed you deleted a page i created Joseph C Kalimbwe. I request you revist your decision this is because this character is an active participant in Namibian Youth Political Movement representing majority marginalised poor black Namibian Youth. Also, the Affirmative Repositioning Movement for which he represents has a majority youth masses following and partakes in National issues of land redistribution among Namibians. I ask you revisit your decision and undelete it.

Also I created in the same vain similar articles of black African Youths that make part of our representation and stand for nobles causes. Do see the difference as these fall under one category

Do review undelete as this black history does meet Notability requirements to be here.

MyPeople76 (talk) 04:08, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@MyPeople76: I just looked at the article again, and I still don't think it shows notability. If you would like the deletion reviewed, you can request that at WP:Deletion review. I would restore it and create an RfD instead, but an article about that person was already deleted via RfD.
Please note that the requirement is that the article show notability, not just that the subject be notable: the notability has to be indicated in the article. (When I say notable, I mean according to Wikipedia's definition of notability, not anyone's personal definition.) Also, notability is not "inherited": in this case, that means that the organizations might be notable but the individual people might not be. Being a member of a notable group does not automatically make a person notable.
Thank you for the list of related articles. I will look at them to see if they show notability. If I think they don't, I will put them at RfD instead of quickly deleting them. That will give time for a discussion. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:26, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
user:Auntof6 I understand you but like in Mcebo Dlamini, Busisiwe C Seabe, Chumani Maxwelle and the one you deleted Joseph C Kalimbwe notability is shown in these similar articles. These are individuals who are constantly in pursuit of social justice for the majority of black young Africans who are constantly excluded by laws of Apartheid tactics still gripping the public system in both South Africa and Namibia. And it's not about inherited notability, it's the character being in the constant national debate which are accessible. I noticed the previous one weeks back of Joseph C Kalimbwe wasn't done accordingly hence its removal. In this instance, I corrected the one I made. --MyPeople76 (talk) 06:48, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@MyPeople76: Then we disagree about whether notability is shown. That's OK: That's what RfD and deletion review are for, to get more input. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:09, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
user:Auntof6 I do appreciate your work. Because you are one of the helpful admins according to your contributions - that worth of appreciation if no one said it. But I am not in anyway disputing, i meant both these articles Mcebo Dlamini, Chumani Maxwelle, Joseph C Kalimbwe & Busisiwe C Seabe one and the same as they represent similar characters and shown in the articles themselves. That's why I see no reason as to why Joseph C Kalimbwe must not be here as it was changed from its previous done-well done version and they (all articles) are shown in similar content and provide an analysis of the character's stance for reform MyPeople76 (talk) 07:21, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@MyPeople76: It's probably just because no one has patrolled them yet. I only looked at the one I recently deleted because I knew it had been through RfD before. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:27, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ok, also like I said, I agree with it having been deleted on RfD because it was honestly not done well. But in this instance, i do not agree with the removal of Joseph C Kalimbwe as its information and structure from the one at RfD was completely different and still fits in the category of the kept Mcebo Dlamini and Chumani Maxwelle MyPeople76 (talk) 07:43, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

A concern of mine

Hey there! First off, I will wholly and readily admit I am a changes watcher... I watch the cvn channels on IRC quite closely, in fact. Lately, I've noticed the articles I've tagged for QD aren't always deleted with the same reason code. (Skipping to the short version) I'm concerned I'm making mistakes. Tonight, I tagged an article as vandalism (I think) and you deleted it as G4. Should I be using G4 if a name is mentioned at all (attack pages, not included)? Is the difference between the tag I chose and the delete you executed due to your appraisal of the article with no reflection on the tag I chose? There's also a good chance I may be over-thinking this. I value your thoughts and wanted to know your opinion. Thank you, again, in advance. Operator873talkconnect 05:32, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Operator873: It's a judgment call. In many cases, there are multiple QD options that could apply, and I pick the one that I think fits best. The one you picked might also apply, but I thought a different one was better. Or, yes, it might be that I thought the one you picked didn't apply. Since administrators do the deleting, we are responsible for picking appropriate reasons. If you give me a specific article name, I can look at it and see why I picked a different option. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:57, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Heal the Living deleted

Heal the Living was deleted from Simple English for unknown reasons. Can somebody please tell me why the article was deleted? It listed an award and had several references on it. Really, I don't understand.

Angela Maureen (talk) 07:46, 22 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@September 1988: The reason is not unknown. Reasons for deletion on are always shown in the deletion log. This one was deleted because it didn't claim notability. The award listed is one that the movie was nominated for. Awards show notability only if the movie wins.
As for the references, there were five. Three were for sites that do not establish notability: Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, and Box Office Mojo. One mentioned the movie only in passing. The other was a separate review of the movie, but one review isn't enough to establish notability. You might like to read WP:NOTFILM to get more info on how to establish notability for movies. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:03, 22 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Article remake

Hello Auntof6. Since you previously deleted the article 2017 Atlantic hurricane season on this wiki, I make that page in my sandbox subpage right here with a little bit of information in there. Can I re-create that article page on this wiki? More information and summary on that article can be added likely from other users for the event. --Allen (talk to me! / ctrb / E-mail me) 07:54, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Allen2: You can recreate it if you write it in simple language. The article in your sandbox is mostly a direct copy from English Wikipedia and is not in simple language, so you would need to simplify it. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:22, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

urgent message

Do you happen to know anybody in the path of Hurricane Michael? I ask 'cause there may be some Wikipedia editors in the path of Michael. Their computers, houses or apartments may be damaged, and they might not be able to edit Wikipedia for quite a while. Angela Maureen (talk) 05:14, 10 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

That's hard to say, because it's impossible to know exactly where a hurricane will go. I have relatives near the possible path that I see online. However, if you mean Wikipedians, then if there are any in danger, and they think it's necessary and they can take the time, I'm sure they'll let people know that they might not be editing for a while. That's probably not a top priority, though, if they really feel they're in danger. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:22, 10 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

change of sentence

On the Abby Finkenauer article, the sentence was changed from "She is a member of the Iowa House of Representatives in the 99th district. She has been so since 2015." to "In 2015, she became the member of the Iowa House of Representatives from the 99th district." For what reason was the sentence rearranged to the latter? Angela Maureen (talk) 15:29, 19 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wherever possible, it's best to write sentences without using time-dependent language and without saying things in a way that can go out of date. That's because articles might not be kept up to date, especially with our small editor base. The word since is time-dependent, because the thing it refers to can stop being true. In this case, if she ever stops being the representative from the 99th district, the original sentence would no longer be true. This is especially an issue with politicians, who often hold different offices during their careers, and sportspeople, who often play for different teams during their careers.
Some other time-dependent words that are best avoided are currently, now, nowadays, these days, has been <foo> for x days/months/years/etc.' and today. When you see these words, one way to remove the time dependence is to say the thing started at a certain time instead of saying that is has been the case for a certain duration.
I know that many enwiki articles use time-dependent language, but enwiki has many more editors than we do and things get updated more often. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:32, 19 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Removal of user talk page access

Why did you remove user talk page access from Gino Nevada? The account is a sockpuppet of Hoggardhigh and globally locked. Vermont (talk) 12:17, 21 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I removed it because the user had abused the talk page with a bad unblock request. I didn't notice the global lock, but since we also have the user locally indeffed, it doesn't hurt to add the talk page restriction. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:55, 21 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Deleted Article feedback/review

Hello,

I am seeking feedback regarding the request for deletion of following article: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion/Requests/2018/Al_Edwards_II

While researching the protocol/process for requesting feedback and reviews of deleted submissions, I noticed incidences of deleted pages being addressed with the dissenting editors to resolve issues and pages were restored to the Wikipedia site. The initial editor (Eptalon) recommended that the article be deleted as there were concerns regarding the subject's notability which were addressed during the "discussion" period; however, the article was still deleted.

Initially, the subject's national recognition and the regional broadcasts of the subject's notability and significance in his community and beyond had not been effectively communicated in efforts to keep the submission concise. It was also not initially clear that the subject was not trained in the field of the notable impact which prompted the regional and national recognition. The original editor's feedback and recommendations for the improvement of the page/article were accurate in improving its presentation and upon implementing those edits, it was anticipated that there would be an acknowledgement of the corrections and any additional feedback you may have seen fit would have been communicated.

I believe the observations and the subsequent edits improved the submission and there may have not been a chance to view the original article in comparison to the edited submission prior to deletion. Please advise regarding this matter as well as provide the process/steps to have the page restored.

Thank you in advance. --Bypgts15 (talk) 02:25, 26 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

edit on Lesbianism in erotica

The abbrevation WNIF (When Night is Falling) was changed to the movie. What's up with that, Auntof6? Angela Maureen (talk) 23:49, 11 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@September 1988: It has to do with encyclopedic tone. In the type of writing done on Wikipedia, abbreviations like that are not used for everything. They're used mostly for organizations that are commonly known by the abbreviations. Examples are NATO, SAG, and AMA: most people know those by their initials, but the first time they're mentioned in an article they should be spelled out (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Screen Actors Guild, American Medical Association). Using an abbreviation for a movie name or TV show is something you'd see more in entertainment magazines: there's nothing wrong with that, it's just not the right tone for Wikipedia.
if you want to learn more about tone on Wikipedia, you can read en:WP:TONE. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:36, 12 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

WAM Organizers Update

Hi WAM Organizer! Hopefully, everything works just fine so far! Need Help Button, post in any language is fine

  • Here are some recent updates and clarification of rules for you, and as always, let me know if you have any idea, thought or question.
    • Additional souvenirs (e.g. postcard) will be sent to Ambassadors and active organizers.
    • A participant's article count is combined on all language Wikipedias they have contributed to
    • Only Wikipedia Asian Month on Wikipedia or Wikivoyage projects count (no WikiQuote, etc.)
    • The global top 3 article count will only be eligible on Wikipedias where the WAM article requirement is at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words.
    • If your community accepts an extension for articles, you should set up a page and allow participants to submit their contributions there.
    • In case of redirection not allowed submitting in Fountain tool, a workaround is to delete it, copy and submit again. Or a submission page can be used too.
    • Please make sure enforce the rules, such as proper references, notability, and length.
    • International organizers will double check the top 3 users' accepted articles, so if your articles are not fulfilling the rules, they might be disqualified. We don't want it happened so please don't let us make such a decision.

Please feel free to contact me and WAM team on meta talk page, send me an email by Email this User or chat with me on facebook. For some languages, the activity for WAM is very less, If you need any help please reach out to us, still, 12 more days left for WAM, Please encourage your community members to take part in it.

If you no longer want to receive the WAM organizer message, you can remove your username at this page.

Nanjing edits to the main page

Apologies for the agita. It's hard to believe some of the students are so lazy and inattentive as to have been placing their edits on the main page but here we are.

I'm certain none of them were sockpuppets and I can leave messages for them on their user pages, but you can wait until I see them personally on Tuesday to unblock them if they were really so disruptive that you don't trust them at all.

Looking over the school projects page and seeing the issues with your main page, I'll definitely use that going forward. Thanks for the heads up and sorry again. — Mr Spear (talk) 13:53, 18 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mr Spear: It was the main page's talk page, not the main page itself. When we see a pattern like that, we try to nip it in the bud. At the time I blocked the users, I didn't know about your group's project. FYI, the users I blocked were Jennifer LLY, Charlotte ChanXD, Linda lee 7, and Space exists. I'll unblock them and make sure I left a message on their talk pages.
I also noticed some people putting similar text on their own user page or user talk page: the former is actually one of the ways to have a sandbox. The latter is not how talk pages are supposed to be used, but probably no one will object. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:22, 18 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Italophilia

I am a new writer on simple Wikipedia who has been posting many times as an IP in the last years. In many occasions I have appreciated your interventions, and this is why I ask you to do something in a continuous reversal of what I post in the article Italophilia. I wrote most of this article on the English Wikipedia in 2013 and since then another wikipedian (user:Philantonia) has practically changed it all, improving & changing a lot the article. I decided some days ago to enlarge the article "italophilia" in simple Wikipedia (that I created as IP 98.77.38.175 in May 2013) adding some excerpts that I wrote in 2013 in en.wikipedia and that actually are no more existing in the en.wikipedia. These excerpts are all mine, but user:Operator873 erased all and he wrote "Reverted good faith edits by Esauster". I reverted explaining that "this is very simple english...I have written for years in simple as an IP and NEVER I had problems. I add more from my simple version of 2013, written by me. In en.wikipedia they have hugely modified what I wrote in 2013". But again and again my excerpts have been erased (also by another wikipedian named user:Vermont)....... even the most simple phrases that I added on November 23! Sincerely I cannot understand why all this is done for very simple & easy improvements, like the last I did on November 23.......Can you help me? I know you are a serious admin and I'll do whatever you suggest. Thanks, --Esauster (talk) 04:26, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Esauster: I looked at the text you added. It doesn't seem like simple English to me, and I'm sure that's why your changes were reverted. Have you read Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages? That might help you understand the issues. If you want to work on simplifying that text, you could put a copy of the updated article in a sandbox and work on it there. I would be willing to give you some guidance on it if you want. If you have any questions about this, let me know. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:30, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK, Auntof6. In April 2013 one of my many IP wrote this version https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Italophilia&oldid=548925643 but others are done before: anyway that version (that is totally different from the actual -a lot more "complicated"- version, as you can easily see) is going to be on my sandbox (I don't find this sandbox in simple, so I posted in my talkpage), waiting for your guidance. Thanks, --Esauster (talk) 15:23, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Since that is not the proper use of a talk page, I moved the article content to User:Esauster/sandbox. I will look at it later and give you some input. In the meantime, be sure you have read the page I linked above on how to write Simple English. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:35, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Esauster That IP wrote 3056 bytes of content in 2013, where you added to the Simple English article 18000 bytes. The content you added on this Wikipedia is also completely different than the content you supposedly added in 2013 to enwiki; there is no overlap in text or even subject. That IP added three paragraphs to the enwiki article on Anti-Italianism, focusing on the United Kingdom, which is completely different than what you wrote here. May I ask where the content you added a few days ago originates? Thank you, Vermont (talk) 11:47, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but I wrote with a lot of IPs and I cannot remember everything after years and years. Please, allow me to collaborate with simple Wikipedia, can you?.....thanks--Esauster (talk) 15:11, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

In a recent Christmas song article, the words a younger woman were erased from the article; they appeared before Cousin Mel. Why were the three words deleted from the page? I'm talking about a recent article I created on November 16. Angela Maureen (talk) 13:00, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

They were deleted because the song doesn't say that Mel is a younger woman. The only thing it says about Mel is that Grandpa was "playing cards with Cousin Mel". Since Mel can be either man's name or a woman's (more often male, in my experience), there's no reason to assume that the song meant Mel to be female, or even an adult. The video shows Mel as a woman, but the part of the article where those words were removed is talking about the song, not the video. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:01, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Athanasio Celia

Hi Auntof6, please could you be so kind and tell me if I've properly signed my notice on the discussion page ( https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion/Requests/2018/Athanasio_Celia ), because, unfortunately, I can't use "tildes" on my computer or on any other Greek computer... Thank you in advance! (User:Lucky Billy 1999) (talk) 2 December 2018, 11:39 (UTC)

@Lucky Billy 1999: It looks fine. You might want to use the button for signatures. It's on the editing toolbar (or whatever it's called -- it's the place above the edit window that has links for B (bold), I (italic), Advanced, Special characters, etc.). On my screen, the button to insert a signature is the fourth from the left. It looks like a lower-case letter "L". It's between the italic "I" and the symbol that looks like two links from a chain. Just click in the text at the point where the signature should go and then click the signature button. Let me know if that doesn't work for you. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:08, 2 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Again thank you very-very much for the detailed and swift help (I think now it works!). (User:Lucky Billy 1999) (talk) 2 December 2018, 12:24 (UTC)

the word but

Almost every time I use the word but, it gets erased from the article. Can someone please tell me why? Angela Maureen (talk) 08:06, 10 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

It depends on how it's used. I assume you saw where I removed it from the 98 Degrees article. Here are some reasons for which I might remove words like but:
  • It's sometimes not needed to communicate information. In conversational English, certain words are sometimes used even when they don't add anything to the meaning of what's being said. That doesn't work for the tone used in Wikipedia. But can be one of those words.
  • It's not usually good grammar to start a sentence with but. When trying to simplify a sentence in the format "X, but Y," it's tempting to just split it before but. However, that doesn't always make two good sentences.
  • The word but is best used between two clauses that say things that seem at least somewhat contradictory or inconsistent. A musical group recording or performing after taking a break is not contradictory or inconsistent: breaks end, and you'd expect the group to work together again after a break. If they had announced their retirement instead of a break, then the clause about recording again would seem inconsistent with that announcement.
Hope that helps. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:03, 10 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Question

Am I in trouble since The page I created was deleted?--Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 01:50, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) @Thegooduser: I checked over the deleted pages you created and found no reason to believe you're in any kind of "trouble" as you put it. One of Wikipedia's main values is to be bold and sometimes that results in articles and ideas being deleted or not realized. I'm happy to provide you with any assistance I can. Feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or jump on IRC by clicking "connect" in my signature. Thanks for your contributions so far! Operator873talkconnect 02:05, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Operator873 What about the other articles I created?--Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 02:10, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Thegooduser: The articles you've created have been worked on some by other editors. The easiest way to learn how to write better Wikipedia articles is to keep going back and looking at the articles you've written and what others have done to make them better. Learn from everyone who contributes to the articles you write! To answer your question, you're doing a good job! Keep writing and keep learning. Don't be too scared to ask for help if you need it. Operator873talkconnect 02:19, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Thegooduser: I see two pages deleted:
  • Wikipedia:TheWikiWizard: you asked for that one to be deleted less than an hour after you created it. If it was a test, be aware that tests should be done only in your own user space or in the project's sandbox.
  • The one about Franklin's Lost Expedition. I deleted that one because it didn't have enough information in it to show why the subject was notable. If you want time to work on an article to add information, you can do that in a personal sandbox.
If there were any other pages deleted, maybe someone restored them. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:59, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

FYI

I used wrong spelling because I do not have "move over redirect" ability. --— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mvtalogrovp (talkcontribs) 09:25, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mvtalogrovp: Never use wrong spelling. If you can't do a move, contact an admin for help. Also, please sign your posts on talk pages. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:31, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

It was as lightly wrong as possible. As I edited from IP no admin bothered to help me. So I used "established fact" approach instead. Mvtalogrovp (talk) 09:34, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mvtalogrovp: I repeat: never use wrong spelling. We do help people editing from IPs, but sometimes we don't respond right away because there are few of us. Where did you ask for help? --Auntof6 (talk) 09:38, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

So please delete Koppa(letter), as it does have wrong spelling without space. And I asked for help someone who recently edited related pages. Mvtalogrovp (talk) 09:53, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I didn't realize they were in subcategories while moving the pages from Category:Universities to Category:Colleges and universities. Thank you for fixing those pages. :) -BRP ever 07:48, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@BRPever: No problem: it can be hard to account for everything when processing things like that. The one that trips me up is remembering to check for subpages when deleting templates. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:40, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Single-page categories for YOB, YOD

Noting your recent changes to Khalid ibn al-Walid after mine, do I understand correctly: create a category for a year of birth or year of death here as soon as there's a single page for that year? After you created these, I wikilinked both in Wikidata (which has recently become my WP of most contributions). -- Deborahjay (talk) 12:18, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Deborahjay: Yes. In most cases, we want at least three entries in a category, but there are exceptions to that. The exceptions include some chronology categories (years of birth, years of death, years, decades), maintenance categories, and sometimes certain others. We should probably document the exceptions somewhere.
And thanks for the Wikidata work: I know we need more of our pages linked. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:29, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Deborahjay, the main purpose of telling people to wait for atleast 3 is to prevent people from adding a category and then add 20 levels of categories above it with the only entry in each of those categories being the subcategory below it. So there are times when its still somewhat reasonable to add with less than 3. It is really just a best practice to keep things simple. I am not even sure we have a rule that you can't create with less than 3, its just very highly discouraged. -DJSasso (talk) 17:32, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:BOX

Hello! I've restored the above page as it was vandalized, not created, by that IP who seems to have been replacing letters on multiple pages with similar-looking letters yet have different unicode ID's. Thanks, Vermont (talk) 16:27, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Vermont: Understood, and thanks. I saw some others like that and wondered what was going on. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:40, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. I think they're using cryllic letters. For example, в rather than B and Р rather than P. Vermont (talk) 19:44, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

recent word change

On the recent article I made yesterday, I found the name Wile E. changed to the Coyote. Furthermore, I noticed by Atari changed to on Atari. What reason for the change? Angela Maureen (talk) 01:07, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

The Coyote is not usually called "Wile E." Even if he were, though, calling him that would imply that "Wile" is his given name, and the style on Wikipedia calls for referring to people by their surnames.
As for the by/on change, the preposition is written to apply to multiple companies, not just Atari. By would mean that the company created the game, and on means that it ran on the system but could have been created by another company. The enwiki article specifically says that games on some of those systems were by other companies, so we should say on. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:27, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

a number (of) vs some

Every time I use a number of and certain, the words are removed from the articles I create. For what particular reason? Angela Maureen (talk) 04:19, 27 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

They're not good words to use in an encyclopedia because they're vague. If you say "a number of", that tells you nothing: that could be anything from one to a million or more. It's better to be as precise as possible, such as giving an exact number or giving a more-specific range.
As for certain, if you say something like "certain people didn't like that," the reader will want to know which people didn't like it.
Besides being unencyclopedic, these terms are not easy for our readers to understand when used the way you used them. For example, the word certain can also mean that you're sure about something. If a reader didn't know the colloquial way of using it that I mentioned above, they could think that "certain people didn't like that" means that people who are sure about something didn't like whatever the thing was. When writing here, you always have to keep our target audience in mind; that's the whole reason this Wikipedia exists. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:08, 27 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
