The year started with the continuation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine which began in early 2022. In January, an Islamist suicide bomber killed over 80 people in a mosque in Pakistan. In February, a major earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 46,000 people, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes of the 21st century.
Former King of Greece Constantine II, former President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf and musician Burt Bacharach died.
